South Hills clinches playoffs while Damien playoff hopes fade; Duarte back in title hunt with 4-3 win over La Puente

South Hills in playoffs, Damien on life support: South Hills clinched a playoff spot in the CIF-Southern Section Division 2 baseball playoffs with a 4-0 win over Damien on Thursday.
“Anytime you can beat a team as well-coached as Damien, it’s a good win,” Huskies coach Kevin Smith said. “But we’re in first place and we want to win out and get the best possible seed we can because that’s huge.”
The Huskies (17-5, 9-2) got a two-hitter from senior Adrian De Horta, who shut out the Spartans for the second time this season.

Duarte 4, La Puente 3: Anthony Baroni is one of Duarte High School’s top hitters, but he bats No. 9 in the order.
On Thursday, the senior left fielder did not have any hits. But the way he hit the ball put the Falcons back in the Montview League race.
“It’s almost a little tease batting ninth,” Baroni said.
He laid down a fifth-inning bunt that led to a throwing error to ignite a Falcons rally. Then he hit bases-loaded sacrifice fly an inning later to propel the Falcons to a 4-3 victory over visiting La Puente for a split of the week series.
