Softball Playoffs: Bishop Amat survives scare, rallies in seventh for 3-2 win; South El monte shocks San Marino, 2-0

Plenty of drama during the first-round of the CIF-Southern Section softball playoffs, Bishop Amat, the Tribune’s top team, trailed 2-1 going to the bottom of the seventh but rallied to defeat El Segundo, 3-2. South El Monte with the surprise result of the day, knocking off San Marino and super pitcher Michelle Floyd, 2-0. Other mild shockers, South Hills knocking off Pacific Coast League champion Beckman, 4-2. The Valle Vista league’s best two, Northview and San Dimas, both won easily and Charter Oak clobbered West Covina, 13-5

PRE-GAME PREDICTIONS: I’m rooting and pulling for the SGV teams as much as anyone, but not sure there will be many left standing after today. Guranteed winners are Bishop Amat, Charter Oak, San Dimas and Chino Hills. 50-50 chances for Ayala, Bonita, Duarte, Northview and those going fishing are South Hills, South El Monte, Sierra Vista and Arroyo. I will update as many as I can later and if you’re at a game, tweet updates to @sgvnsports and I’ll retweet it.

  • gotta be Ayala/Lugo…3 miles apart, Lugo went to the finals last year, Ayala always has D1 players…..Tesoro will give Bonita a good game..not much else to talk about with the rest. Fishbowl will be doing well to go 5-4 in SGV games.

    • LoveBajaMalibu

Yes, probably Ayala-Lugo, but no where near the SGV. Do we care.?
The Trib. is a valley paper.

  • Get Real

Amat avoided disaster! The core comes through again. El Segundo pitcher kept the young Amat batters off the bases. Nothing Amat could do with two outs and their core hitters coming up with hits. Hey coach! the “table setters” are good players, but at this level, well they showed their inexperience, Sanchez, Saucedo come up big.

    • TheCloser

Absolutely, the core of seniors are very talented and they get their credit but a little love to the two freshman who got on in the bottom of the 7th with all the pressure for Lexi Gonzalez to hit them in.

  • What a busy second round on Tuesday, five area teams left in Division two … SGV will be lucky if one or two advance.
