Don Sumner, longtime cross county and track coach at Glendora High School, died suddenly while at work on Thursday, June 6.
Sumner began coaching with his own kids and with the San Gabriel Valley Roadrunners, and recently completed his 18th year of coaching at Glendora.
He coached a number of all-CIF runners, and sent dozens of athletes on to college. His teams won five cross country league championships, and the boys were CIF finalists the last four years.
The competitive peak of his coaching career was the GHS Boys CIF Cross Country Championship and runner-up finish at the State meet in 2009.
But the real highlight of Coach’s career were the thousands of athletes who learned to train and complete but mostly learned to believe in themselves under his leadership and friendship.
Donnie was 64 at the time of his death, and is survived by his wife Patricia, sons Joey and Stephen, and seven Grandchildren, along with thousands athletes and friends.
Services will be Wednesday at 7:00pm at Forrest Lawn – Covina (21300 Via Verde Drive)
