Track All-Area: Bonita’s Marissa Scott and Bishop Amat’s Darren Andrews earn top honors

Bishop Amat High School’s Darren Andrews and Bonita’s Marissa Scott accomplished a lot in their athletic careers. But the duo saved their best for last.

Andrews, who finished seventh in the 100 at the CIF State championships, and Scott, who was the lone area competitor to win a CIF-Southern Section title in addition to advancing to the state meet, are Tribune Track and Field Athletes of the Year.

For Scott, it was the finishing tough of a stellar career that includes helping Bonita win a CIF State championship this past fall and earning Tribune Girls Cross Country Runner of the Year.

She earned the honor after qualifying for the state meet in the 1,600, advancing to Masters in the 1,600 and 800 and winning a Division 2 title in the 800 (two minutes, 13.93 seconds).

Scott was the lone divisional champion in the area after besting San Juan Hills’ Kylie Vandenberg and Mater Dei’s Ashlyn Rambo to win the 800. She qualified for the state meet in the 1,600 a week later before concluding at the state prelims with a time of 5:03.49.

“I was really pleased, because I felt this season I had trained harder than had before,”

said Scott, who will run at Cal-Berkeley next season. “I knew what my goals were. I was excited going into the CIF finals, because I felt I had a really good chance.

“I was really happy that I met my goal of making it to state. It was realy exciting for me.”
The same could be said of Andrews, who improved from week to week and met all his goals, which including lowering his best time in the 100 to the 10.5 and advancing to the state meet.
He ran a wind-aided 10.54 to finish second in Division 3 at the CIF-SS finals on May 18 before qualifying for the state meet a week later. He placed seventh in the state finals with a 10.79.
“I was happy for what I accomplished this year,” said Andrews, who will attend UCLA on a football scholarship. “Everything I dreamed of came true. My goal was to run a 10.5, and I did that three times. I couldn’t be more happy. I wanted to get to the state meet, and I got there. I just gave it my all. I’m very happy for my season.”

Boys Coach of the Year: DAN LUNA, Rowland
Luna, who has served two stints last 21 years at Rowland, annually fields one of the area’s better programs. It was no different this season. The Raiders, paced by jumper Devin Thompson and distance runner David Galvez, placed 10th in CIF-SS Division 2, the highest finish in any division among area teams.

Girls Coach of the Year: LONNY CARR, Bonita
Carr, who leads the Bearcats track and field and cross country teams, is one of the top coaches in the area, with Bonita usually ranking among the best in their respective CIF-SS Division. The Bearcats, led by distance runners Marissa and Kailyn Scott and Mackenzie Landa and jumper Nikki Wheatley, finished seventh in D-2.

BOYS FIRST TEAM
DEVIN THOMPSON, ROWLAND

The senior qualified for the CIF State championships in the long and triple jumps. He was eighth (46 feet, 2 inches) ) in the state in the triple jump, and second (22-6 1/4) and fourth (45-4 1/2) in the D-2 long jump and triple jump at the CIF-SS finals.

JOSH WEBSTER, SOUTH HILLS
The senior was one of five area athletes to qualify for the state meet. He was the area’s top long jumper, making the field at the state meet and placing third in Division 3 at 22 feet, 11 inches, which was the top mark in the area this season. He was 12th at Masters (21-2 3/4).

SAM GARCIA, ARROYO
The senior was the area’s top distance runner. He advanced to to the CIF-SS Masters Meet, placing ninth in the 3,200 (Nine minutes, 16.70 seconds). He was was third in Division 2 at the CIF-SS finals with a time of 9:20.97, which the fastest time in the area this season. Garcia was area cross country runner of the year.

CADE LINDSAY, GLENDORA
The senior was area’s top hurdler. He had the best performance of the season at the CIF-Southern Section finals, placing second in Division 2 with a time of 14.81 seconds in the 110 high hurdles. Lindsay also had the two quickest wind-aided runs, with times of 14.50 and 14.65 at the Baseline League finals, and D2 prelims.

DONAVIN WASHINGTON, CHARTER OAK
The junior was one of the top sprinters in the area, advancing to the CIF-SS Division 3 finals in the 100 and 200. He was fifth in the 100 at 10.78 seconds and eighth in the 200 at 22.16. He had the third-quickest time in the area in the 100 (10.78) and 200 (21.99), the latter at the Sierra League finals.

GIRLS FIRST TEAM
NIKKI WHEATLEY, BONITA
The junior was one of five area athletes to qualify for the CIF State championships, making the field in the triple jump for the second consecutive season. At CIF-SS finals, she was third in the triple jump (38-1/2) in Division 2 and fifth in the long jump (17-1/2).

TY’JALAYAH ROBERTSON, WALNUT
The senior was one of the top triple jumpers in the area, advancing to the CIF-SS Masters Meet. She was third in Division 1 at CIF-SS finals with a mark of 38 feet, 1/4 inch, which was second in the area this season. Robertson was 10th at Masters (37-1 3/4).

EMILY HUBERT, BISHOP AMAT
The sophomore, who is one of the top distant runners in the area, makes the all-area track team after earning a first team selection in cross country in the fall. At the CIF-SS finals, she placed fifth in the Division 2 3,200 (10:55.45) and was eighth in the 1,600 (5:05).

DESDRITH MEJIA, ROWLAND
The senior was the top hurdler in the area and helped the Raiders to a solid season. She posted the top times in the 100 (15.61 seconds) and 300 (46.84) this season. Mejia swept both events at the Hacidena League finals and placed eighth in Division 2 in the 100 (15.80).

KHAILA AMAZAN, SOUTH HILLS
The junior was one of the top throwers in the area and helped South Hills to a solid season. Amazan ranked among the area leaders in the shot put, topping out with a throw of 35 feet, 10 inches. She placed fifth in Division 3 at the CIF-SS finals at Mt. SAC on May 18. Her toss ranked second in the area for the season.
