Little League Baseball: Azusa gets rematch with La Verne tonight in Section 3 playoffs in Ontario

Azusa Little League manager Darryl Carmona said after Sunday’s bounceback win over Chino National his team was anxious for another shot at the same La Verne team that shut out Azusa in the tournament opener.
Azusa is going to get that chance after pounding South Pasadena 19-2 in a four-inning, mercy-rule victory Monday in the Section 3 playoffs at Homer Briggs Park.
Azusa had five home runs and totaled 19 hits against three South Pasadena pitchers.
La Verne (6-0) and Azusa will meet again at 7 tonight in the title game, and with a win, Azusa could force an “if necessary” game Wednesday night with a trip to the Sub Divisional in Long Beach at stake.
“We’re really hungry and playing very well,” Carmona said. “We’ve wanted another shot at La Verne and we’ve got it now, so we’re pretty excited.”
Benny Torres had a three-run home run in a five-run first inning in which Azusa had five hits and sent 10 batters to the plate.
Sergio Ramirez’s three-run home run highlighted an eight-run second inning to give Azusa a 13-0 lead.
Ramirez later hit a solo home run and finished 3 for 4 with four RBIs and three runs scored.
Zach Howorth’s solo shot in the third inning was the lone bright spot for South Pasadena.
Jason Nunez had three hits, including a three-run home run, Torres collected three hits and Anthony Guarrera walked twice and hit a solo home run for Azusa.
Savian Joseph doubled in the second inning for South Pasadena and scored on a pair of wild pitches to account for the other South Pasadena run.
Josh Lopez drove in the three runs for Azusa and Hector Dominguez came off the bench and contributed an RBI single.
