CIF has denied Diamond Bar High School football player Antonio “Noodles” Hull’s appeals bid and the junior standout will not be eligible to play for the Brahmas varsity football team until Nov. 16.
Hull, the Tribune’s Newcomer of the Year last fall, left West Covina in February and transferred to Diamond Bar. West Covina challenged the transfer on grounds that it was athletically motivated and presented the CIF-Southern Section with an email from Hull’s father as proof.
The Southern Section declared Hull ineligible prompting Hull’s family to hire Orange County attorney Chris Prussak in hopes of winning their appeal with the executive committee.
“I’ve never seen a high school go after a kid like this,” said Prussak, who will now discuss with Hull’s family whether a lawsuit will be filed. “It was like a girlfriend being dumped. The bottom line is that West Covina had an ax to grind with Mr. Hull. They put CIF on alert this transfer was happening way before it was done.
“Shame on West Covina High School when you have these adult coaches going after a child like this.”

Little League: Azusa squeezes out 7-6 victory, forces dramatic winner-take-all in Section 3 title game tonight in Ontario

By Brian Reed-Baiotto
Azusa Little League needed a victory Tuesday night in the Section 3 playoffs at Homer Briggs Park to force a winner-take-all scenario Wednesday night.
Azusa will get that chance after beating La Verne 7-6 in a game that saw a combined six home runs and seven pitchers. La Verne trailed 7-2 heading into the bottom of the fifth inning after being thoroughly dominated by Azusa starting pitcher Benny Torres.
Torres went four complete, but couldn’t take the mound in the fifth inning after hitting the tournament’s 85-single-game pitch limit.
The towering Azusa star, however, got 11 of his 12 outs via strikeout and allowed two runs and two hits.
La Verne, though, immediately jumped on Azusa reliever Joe Elizalde, who replaced Torres, for four fifth-inning runs that included back-to-back solo shots from Noah Woodall and Max Urrutia.
But Azusa’s Edwin Anota was able to get Woodall on a 3-and-0 pitch to ground out to third to end the game with Woodall represented the winning run.
Woodall, the La Verne ace, will get the ball tonight at 7 as the tournament’s best two teams meet for the third time with a trip to the Sub Divisional in Long Beach on the line.
Azusa jumped on La Verne starter Joe LaFountain for four first-inning runs when Sergio Ramirez hit the first of his two solo home runs and Jason Nunez connected on a three-run blast to take a 4-0 lead before La Verne had picked up its bats.
Jesse Ramirez doubled home Matt Marshall in the second to get La Verne to within 4-1, but Ramirez and Shawn Whitworth hit third-inning home runs to bump the Azusa lead to 6-1.
Jerry Terry stopped the bleeding on the mound for La Verne with six strikeouts in three innings to set the stage for the comeback.
But Anota, who started Saturday in the tournament opener in a 5-0 loss to La Verne and didn’t retire a batter, clutched up Tuesday and has his team in the title game.

Little League Baseball: Azusa gets rematch with La Verne tonight in Section 3 playoffs in Ontario

By Brian Reed-Baiotto, Correspondent
Azusa Little League manager Darryl Carmona said after Sunday’s bounceback win over Chino National his team was anxious for another shot at the same La Verne team that shut out Azusa in the tournament opener.
Azusa is going to get that chance after pounding South Pasadena 19-2 in a four-inning, mercy-rule victory Monday in the Section 3 playoffs at Homer Briggs Park.
Azusa had five home runs and totaled 19 hits against three South Pasadena pitchers.
La Verne (6-0) and Azusa will meet again at 7 tonight in the title game, and with a win, Azusa could force an “if necessary” game Wednesday night with a trip to the Sub Divisional in Long Beach at stake.
“We’re really hungry and playing very well,” Carmona said. “We’ve wanted another shot at La Verne and we’ve got it now, so we’re pretty excited.”
Benny Torres had a three-run home run in a five-run first inning in which Azusa had five hits and sent 10 batters to the plate.
Sergio Ramirez’s three-run home run highlighted an eight-run second inning to give Azusa a 13-0 lead.
Ramirez later hit a solo home run and finished 3 for 4 with four RBIs and three runs scored.
Zach Howorth’s solo shot in the third inning was the lone bright spot for South Pasadena.
Jason Nunez had three hits, including a three-run home run, Torres collected three hits and Anthony Guarrera walked twice and hit a solo home run for Azusa.
Savian Joseph doubled in the second inning for South Pasadena and scored on a pair of wild pitches to account for the other South Pasadena run.
Josh Lopez drove in the three runs for Azusa and Hector Dominguez came off the bench and contributed an RBI single.
