Breaking News: Bonita Unified School District launches investigation of San Dimas coaching staff, and could Jake Payton return after all this?

Despite the allegations listed below, there is still a chance Jake Payton could return to San Dimas, according to sources. Payton’s family presented new evidence to the CIF-Southern Section section this week in hopes of Payton gaining his eligibility at Upland after being declared ineligible by CIF citing an athletically motivated transfer. If the “new” evidence does not lead to Payton gaining his eligibility at Upland, sources said Payton will likely return to San Dimas instead of sitting out the 2013 football season.

BREAKING NEWS: zernickowBy Aram Tolegian, San Gabriel Valley Tribune
The Bonita Unified School District is in the midst of an investigation into allegations made against the San Dimas High School football coaching staff that it put players on a weight-gain plan and provided them with nutritional supplements in the form of shakes to help them reach weight goals.
The allegations were made by Peter Lyons, the guardian of former Saints standout running back Jake Payton, who transferred to Upland at the end of spring only to have San Dimas challenge the move. Payton was declared ineligible for the upcoming season by the CIF Southern Section office.

Jake will never be allowed back at SD with all of this slander!

    • SaintsR4real

Children please, it’s only slander if its not true. Unfortunately for Coach Zernikow and possibly his staff, the allegations are true but have never gone passed the parents and Coach Z.

      • Saints Fan

Then enlighten us. EXACTLY what has been given ? Muscle Milk, Protein Shakes, what ???? You know Muscle Milk sponsors several high profile So Cal High School Football programs right ???

        • In the Know

you sure are right BUT NOT ONE SCHOOL PERSONAL is allowed to give a MINOR the “JUICE” GOOD BYE ZER COW Milk

        • In the Know

Not sure what was in those shakes but it sure made the boys play good— Jethro Bodine kind of drink. ANYTHING from a coach is BANNED pal C Ya Z

          • Highlander

In the Know or shall we say Lyons family member, you are bitter. We all get it, i would be bitter too if I tried to be shady and got caught. Next time don’t leave a paper trail of email and text messages complaining about the head coach and wanting to get Payton a “D1″ scholarship. If you were smart you would have quietly pulled him out of school and submitted the paperwork, but no your family ran their mouth off like they have been since April. Guess where that has gotten you, absolutely no where. You look like a joke to the community, the school district, and now the whole area because of you childish and vengeful antics. The district will find nothing and having Payton solicit text messages from former players is a pathetic attempt to get a man fired. This all started because your ego about Jakes ability is inflated. Is he a good back, yes. Is he a top level D1 back, no way. Does he run hard, yes. Can he make a guy miss in the hole, no. Does he has speed, Yes. D1 speed, No. He had a shot at getting a nice scholarship from a smaller D1/D1AA/D2 school and you guys took a chance and blew it. SD didn’t ruin Payton’s future, your egos did. Don’t try and ruin another mans career because you got called out. My suggestion is to stop the nonsense, let Payton focus on getting ready for JC ball after he graduates and for goodness sake please just go away. We are all tired of you and your antics.

          • GP AKA Green Machine

Payton had a shot…but no one ever thinks about contacting schools in the MAC or sunbelt. D1AA schools get moved into these division frequently. Everyone thinks they can play in the BCS until Feb 2. If you can’t or don’t who cares. Get a free ride and go to the combine. You can still go to the NFL.

          • Saints Fan

            Amen Brother !!!

          • GP AKA Green Machine

Saints you can’t put your career in a coaches nor training groups hands. If someone promises you something…don’t count on it. Send out your tape. If he does not play this season, That’s what they are going to be doing anyway. Why wait until now or why wait until your coach tells you that you are not good enough. Why get sour if you didn’t put the work in and market yourself.

          • Jerry McGuire

            I agree but might add… this…
A lot of parents “think” they have a D1 player or the next Emitt Smith. Lets get real, Payton at D1 or D1AA or even D2 level. No way Jose. Size and speed isn’t there…
Good HS back for San Dimas, but lets see what happens at the JC level first. JC football in the West is pretty tough with good comp.
Parents just screwed this kid up…

    • In the Know

not slander– just the truth and it will set him free

  • Saints Parent

Fred, my god are you Serious…. first, you and Aram are competing on covering this, he has it on his Blog, you put the same headline here on your Blog, but different picture. Then your verbiage underneath is more about Jake coming back to San Dimas…. really,

Here is some advice, you are a reporter, you should have been out at Practice tonight and seen the look on Coach Z’s face. Now, Coach Z is an incredibly upstanding man, he will NEVER say anything to you contrary. But Jake will NOT, repeat NOT, EVER be allowed in a San Dimas uniform AGAIN. Would you let someone back who has taken a PERSONAL shot at YOU !!! This is a direct personal Shot at Z, his Staff and their Integrity. And no way this is going to be completely pawned off on those naive caregivers…. Jake personally sent misleading text’s to current and past players duping them, trying to get them to say something incriminating about the staff. Then took screen shots / saved them all in an attempt to build a case to get the entire STAFF Fired. Oh Yah, those players will let him back. Think about this, first carry against Bonita, all the lineman stand up and watch there assignment run by them and straight to Jake have fun boys.

Here is another angle, College Recruiters, you do your background research, understand the players. You want to recruit a kid who tries to skip out from one place in his final year, get’s denied, so then goes after the old coaching staff that brought him to where he is with Both Barrels Blazing…? Yep sounds like a Team Player I want to invest my money in.

    • FredJ

Aram and I competing? We worked together on this today. In terms of Jake possibly returning, believe me, I’m not making this stuff up. I have no idea if he will ever play again at San Dimas, but his return to the school is a possibility.

      • SDSaints

Maybe they would of allowed him to come back weeks ago, but after this, no way. This is a case of parenting at its best. Instead of Jake being able to play in 2013, he will be playing at a JC in 2014.

      • In the Know

Court order reads he must play in Upland or the UHS is in contempt of court

        • What?

What court order are you talking about? And what court has the power to order a coach to play a kid?

          • In the Know

Judge Wapner on Peoples Court– but actually the only one that can over turn it is the SUPREME COURT have fun trying– been there done that— children or should I say wards of the court have more rights than President Obama

          • What?

He might be allowed to suit up but there is no way on gods green earth that the Upland Coaching Staff will allow this kid to play even 1 down of football until CIF clears him or a court case is FINALIZED that allows him to play. Salter WILL NOT risk any forfeits for the sake of Jake.

      • Matt Cabrera

Let the boy play..He was a standout at SDHS..I would play regardless..”gimme back my #12 jersey”..

    • Jefe

Yeah I’m gonna have to agree & say Jake wouldn’t exactly be welcomed back with open arms at San Dimas. That train has left the station.

    • In the Know

You bet it was a personal shot— WHAT GO AROUND COMES AROUND– Hope the Juicer enjoys HUMBLE PIE

      • SDSaints

I will give you a couple if days to enjoy this because obviously you are related to the Lyons/Payton family. When that time is up, it will be you who will be eating the humble pie when Coach Z is cleared of all this BS. Payton will still not play this year.

        • In the Know

I will walk to Upland naked from La Verne if Jake P doesn’t play. But if he does SD Saint you are letting me tea bag your old lady LOL– All kidding aside have a great year and lets hope this garbage gets taken care of and the kid plays somewhere—- Court order reads he plays in Upland. So be it.

          CHILD PLEASE

  • reality

If history repeats itself as it often does then heads are going to roll. If there is a shred of truth then the district is obligated to act per what happened at Alhambra. They have to err on the side of safety, that is what we call these days politically correct. If not the coaches, then the accusers heads have to roll as this would be a direct attack to ruin a reputation unfairly. Too bad.

  • Free Billy

    Wow…..how PATHETIC of the Lyons.

    • In the Know

poor coach Z– lets see how long til he is terminated !! Wasn’t that the same coach who had a change of heart and decided to contest the transfer— should have thought twice because you mess with people karma takes over —MAGIC JUICE FOR ALL

      • Jerry McGuire

Its a sad day, when brother or Lyons comes to this. The Payton family has a history of legal issues which can be verified in public records and now the Lyons clan lost there house? Who’s really drinking the Juice?

  • AZTEC PRIDE

Fred, I I finally figured out how to post on my office computer and I had to turn off my comptability settings. ALRIGHT!!!

  • betruthful

Is there is a 3rd party to all this chaos???? Didn’t this horrible mess begin because of his association with his 7on7 participation AND the alleged persuation by someone at Upland? 3 parties here and the one that loses is Jake…the minor. Hold the adults accountable….ALL of them.

  • Highlander

No way Payton comes back to a team where he personally sent text messages to current team members asking about shakes in an attempt to get information to fire their head coach. By the way, rumor has it Payton is a scout team all american at Upland right now. Do D1 colleges recruit from the scout team. As for “In the know” we all know you are either Mr. Lyons or his brother. You are obviously very biased, enjoy it while it lasts because there is no proof and this story will go away faster than Payton’s chances of getting a D1 scholarship. SCOUT TEAM ALL CIF

  • Sour Grapes

I would have expected a “story” like this from Aram, but Fred, you’re better than this! Leading the story with sensationalist a headline, then burying the “timing” disclaimer eight paragraphs down in the story, and filing a story based solely on an allegation of a disgruntled player and his guardians without even the slightest shred of supporting evidence….this isn’t journalism! It’s slimeball!
The district isn’t investigating the coaches, they’re investigating an allegation.
No one has said WHAT was in the shakes, but somehow you’ve jumped to the conclusion it must be illegal. How stupid would you feel if it turns out the shakes were really just that….milk shakes! Ice Cream! Gasp! Are you going to print a retraction with the same passion as the hysterical drivel that has seeped out of your so called news room? I doubt it! I KNOW Aram won’t because that would require character. Come on guys, there are waaaay too many great stories out there about kids and coaches working hard to represent their schools and families, to waste even on article on this.
Fred, you said elsewhere that it would be irresponsible not to report this. Wouldn’t it have been LESS irresponsible to actually have done some investigation on your own before you ran this? Hearsay doesn’t count as evidence, and the absence of ANY evidence or even a specific allegation of a specific violation should have mandated that you NOT run this.
VERY DISAPPOINTED in you Fred. NOT SURPRISED at all Aram!

  • tor eckman

Why would this “new evidence” change the status of Payton’s eligibility at Upland? I presume you’re talking about “milk shake” investigation at San Dimas? Where’s the connection? Payton went “shopping” for a higher profile football program and someone called him on it and the CIF agreed.

  • know it all

funny that Z would fight this so hard when he has own transfer running back who also came with a coach. Your a hypocrite Z

    • Sour Grapes

Why do you keep running your mouth “Know it all”? Your ignorance is on full display here. Z didn’t deny Jakes transfer, CIF did based on THEIR rules/criteria. If the transfer coming in to SD didn’t come legit, he should be denied just like Jake. At this point the difference seems to be the SD kid did things the right way while Jake’s “handlers” failed to do so!
Dude, it’s obvious you have something against Z. Fine, hate him if you like, but there are a lot of really good kids on that team and some good coaches who are being subjected to stupidity like this! Let it go already!

    • Highlander

Know it all, I mean In the Know, I mean Lyons family member, your a joke and continue to show us all why Payton’s transfer got denied. You run your mouths and everything that comes out is bitter and vengeful. SD didn’t recruit those kids and all those transfers are sitting out the mandatory wait period. They did it the right way, they weren’t shady and got caught. Have you guys figured out which JC Payton will be a back up on next year.

  • know it all

Look at you Z lovers, look any half way decent coach can win the val vista, all Im saying is before you defend Z the way you are maybe you all shouldn’t be so hypocritical like him unless you are him or one of these so called good coaches, I see there was still no answer on how ironic that a transfer running back ended up there and his position coach, yes you may be right the kid probably did do the transfer right yet it is very ironic. Oh and by the way, Im not a supporter of jake, upland, san dimas or a family member or friend, Im a guy who just doesn’t think your coach Z is ethical or very good at what he does. He’s not good with x’s and o’s and he is not good managing games either, in fact he wasn’t even that good at La Verne or in high school either, he walked into a good gig and has been lucky he is in the val vista, that’s the truth. I think its funny how quick some are to defend him and the shady things happening , if I was a parent or a coach I know I wouldn’t even deal with supplying athletes anything but water, let the supplements be the job of the athletes parents , Im pretty sure not Z or nay of his coaches are qualified dieticians or trainers who are educated in the uses of supplements and their benefits and harms. I highly doubt muscle milk was all it was , you are dillusional if you think that or coaches there calling it magic whatever are dumb children themselves trying to make it look cool that they are giving there athletes milk. How comical is this whole situation, it actually has me laughing. What a joke.

    • True Identity

Saints football coach Bill Zernickow said. “My opinion is that you can’t say nothing if something happened.” His opinion is that you have to say something if something happened. Crucify Mr. Lyons all you want, but he is just following the advice given by your beloved Coach Z. I believe multiple players confirmed that some sort of shakes were being given. That is for sure something happening.

  • Ana Kin

This is ridiculous. I know of at least a couple of other football programs in the area that have been giving their players protein shakes for a few years now. Let’s face it, there are probably more schools doing it than not. I’m not condoning it, but that’s the state of high school sports nowadays. A win at almost any cost mentallity and where many coaches/teachers are more passionate about winning than molding these student/athletes. Hope Coach Z, who is a great guy, won’t be singled out for what many others are doing blatantly.
