Tribskin Pick’em, your predictions and ours … Smudge Pot and Bishop Amat headline Week 0

The Contest: Once again, Aram Tolegian and I will go head-to-head picking football games throughout the season. He’s edged me out the past two seasons, but it’s not happening this year. He will be back from vacation on Tuesday to fill out his Week 0 picks, but why wait, here’s mine.

This week: Week 0 has been incredible with the addition of the Smudge Pot between rivals Bonita and San Dimas, who kick it off on Thursday at Citrus College. There could be added intrigue if somehow Jake Payton, who left San Dimas for Upland only to transfer to rival Bonita on Friday, is cleared by Thursday. But let’s face it, this game doesn’t need much to get the juices jangling. You want predictions? How’s this? There is no way, no way in the world I’m going against Bonita this time. They have the experienced QB in Sunshine and with Payton out and Bonita and the ‘Cats ticked off with how it fumbled away last year’s game, take Bonita. This is payback time. Santa Margarita at Bishop Amat headlines Friday’s game. As much talk as there has been about the Lancers’ returning QB Koa Haynes, the Lancers are somewhat dinged up and I’m not sure they’re equipped to take on a powerhouse this soon. I don’t expect Bishop Amat to lose any other non-league games, but I do think they loose their first. Other games of note, have to take South Hills over Covina and West Covina over Colony (barely). Also like Los Altos in a blowout over Arroyo and I expect Baldwin Park to bounce back this season with a win at El Monte. I’ve got high hopes for Diamond Bar, so taking them over Montebello

Hey Fred, Santa Margarita is without a doubt a very tough opponent for Bishop Amat to match up against. Toss in the fact that they’re banged up might make this game, not the highlight game of the week. However, I’m looking forward to hearing from the Amat posse and their thoughts.

    • AMAT 73

      NSFMF,
Hearing RSM is a bit banged up also . Many starters did not play against CC in their scrimmage . Either way looking for a hard fought battle .

      • MonkeyWrench

Everyone be banged up. It be time to play and I love BA steping up. Win or lose BA wins in my book. As for da S POT what a great game to kick off Fball in da SGV. Dis game is way bigger then any player…Good Sh*t.

      • Not So Fast My Friend

I’d rather see both healthy and at full strength.

        • AMAT 73

          NSFMF ,
No real big injuries to AMAT , the worst being Hags , just those little nagging injuries but we should be at pretty much full speed and ready to hit .

          • GP AKA Green Machine

In no way is SM a overwhelming Favorite. BA’s youth may play a factor in week 0

      • AZTEC PRIDE

AMAT 73, another football season upon us! Great match up this Friday, AMAT-SGV vs SM- OC! LET’S GO AMAT hope you get that W, and would be a feel great feeling for all the FANS of the SGV! GET’EM AMAT!

  • AZTEC PRIDE

Fred good to see, “Tribskin Pick’em, your predictions and ours”” … up again! Makes all the other news irrelevant! Want to wish the AZUSA AZTECS a great FOOTBALL SEASON and most importanly none of the players get seriously injured!! GET’EM GOING COACH SCHERF!

  • GP AKA Green Machine

Harry Welch’s team is going to be fired up this season. Since the legend is retiring, his debut will be on point. I would have to go with SM as well.

    Grudge Pot 2013-

Payton’s paperwork is pending. If he suits up, this will be one of the most anticipated smudge pots of all time. You are going to have to change the official name for this years game to The “Grudge Pot”. Let’s just say there is a lot of incentive for nasty play. This one is going to be personal.

  • no-step

The Smudge Pot sounds as if it will be “tainted” somehow. I truly hope it won’t mark the end of a great friendly rivalry.

  • Valley Athletics

amat has to replace many players who are off to the next level . Darren Andrews @ucla, dionza blue@ Boise st. Sal Velazquez @ university of Utah , Dj daniels@oregon st. , Joseph cook@dartmouth , demetrious pontikes @ St. John university ,Keanu Higgins @ New Mexico and Matt Lopez . From what I saw at the 7 on 7 tournaments the offense is going to be good . Heard the defense needs work , but has the depth this year in multiple positions . Would like to know who is hurt besides coach Hagerty who got ran over at practice . I read Santa margarita did well against corona centenial at there scrimmage . Mchnicols ran for over 100 yards . Don’t know if he has to sit out 30 days or if he is playing . With mchnichols playing I give the edge to Santa margarita based on his performance against corona centenial.

    • GP AKA Green Machine

I didn’t know DJ got a ride from Oregon st…Great News!

    • Not So Fast My Friend

Centennial had some final evaluations to do with some youth in several spots. I wouldn’t draw much on him getting over 100 yards though.

    • SGV FB Dad

Matt Lopez got a ride to Cal Lutheran

      • Go Deep

A ride to a DIII school? Do you mean on a skateboard or bus. DIII does not give athletic schollys Mr. Lopez must have received a nice academic award, which is always nice to see athletes earn.

        • SGV FB Dad

Its still a free education, and he gets to continue playing the game he loves. No need to demean the young man. He is a real gentleman if you ever get a chance to meet him.

        • GP AKA Green Machine

a ride is a ride…99% of kids can’t play at Cal Lutheran.

  • SGV FB Dad

Not sure you have the details correct. My buddies’ son, who is also my god son, is on the D line. In talking to them this weekend, they said the team was ready, and that there were no injuries to the starters. Their concern was the lack of depth after the starters, and the lack of size on the O Line. But the boys are ready, and they will bang with SM come Friday. I will be there to root on my god son. I think this is really a “Call it” game, as Amat has the home field advantage, but SM has the size advantage on the lines, which could do in the Lancers in the end.

    • GP AKA Green Machine

BA’s line looks to avg around 6’1/ 6’2 255. That’s good size. They are giving up about 25-30 lbs at each spot. But is high school it’s about about Agile lineman w/ strength more than size. It really depends on what BA’s Dline looks like. They need 2 big bodies in the middle and they need to keep their NG’s Fresh. RSM shows only 56 players to BA’s 80 man roster. This game is an even match. Jeremy Nichols is the SM big play guy…who is BA going to match up on him?

      • SGV FB Dad

From what I heard, it looks like they will shadow him and guard him by committee.

        • GP AKA Green Machine

yeah, SM has him listed as RB, But we know that he was a WR. I think they may try to motion him out the Back field to create the LB vs WR match up. I am sure coach hags has not forgotten that this kid was a WR and good one at that.
          Cal preps has it
RSM 31 BA 28…so whoever has the ball last…..

    • Valley Athletics

I heard only Gary gaston is injured .

  • What?

    @Fred
What, no pick-em contest for the rest of us this year? I guess you and Aram got so trampled by the field last year that the 2 of you quit the game only a few weeks into the season?

  • Valley Athletics

Just read that Brandon Boyd from alemany who had decided to concentrate on basketball decided to come back to team . He had 8 interceptions last year . From what I heard about there team is that they where not looking good at there scrimmage Friday .

    • WCDan

I read the same thing somwhere about Alemany not looking too good in their scrimmage last week. Forgot who they scrimmaged against.

  • Duarte_Road

Does anyone know if Amat/SM game will be broadcast online and by who?

  • bishops road

hey Fred, how about Cathedral at La Salle ?

  • 12th man

Amat will need over a 100 yds rushing to control the time of possession & that’s not counting the QB~ Haynes will need anywhere from 30-50 yds just too keep them off balance..They will also need to stop RSM when it’s 2nd or 3rd & long, something that hasn’t been done over the past 4 years..basically it comes down to “defense” can the linebackers control the short game (backs coming out for short passes or screens) will the DB’s have enough speed to prevent the big play? If Amat can keep this one within 10-13 points heading to the 4th..You might witness a big finish..Final score: RSM-35 BA-24 unless they do the things i described..then its: BA-28 RSM-27

    • SGV_Football_Fan

I think you missed the key to the whole game. The D-Line. If AMAT’s the D-Line can occupy the SM offensive lineman, I think everything else will fall into place. That will be a huge task considering the SM lines size. AMAT’s DB’s and Safety’s are fast enough to play with just about anyone and the linebackers are solid.

  • Mirror mirror on the wall

The winner of the SM vs Amat game will make the Pac-5 playoffs and the loser won’t. This game is for the Wild Card just like last years Servite vs Amat.

  • Valley Athletics

Just read that southern section is investigating large amount of transfers to upland . 4 have been cleared and 7 are waiting decision .
