Bishop Amat game story: Bishop Amat overcame a two-touchdown deficit and Adrian Ortega overcame two early fumbles to rebound with three interceptions and two touchdowns to lead the Pac-5s eight-ranked Lancers to a 38-28 upset over sixth-ranked Santa Margarita in the season opener at Kiefer on Friday.
“I had to come back,” Ortega said. “I had to make up for it (fumbles). I owed it to my team, to everybody.” Amat quarterback Koa Haynes returned from a so-so first half to light up in the second, finishing with 275 yards and a game-clinching touchdown to Tyler Vaughns with 1:47 left to ice it.

Amat JV won 29-7 . Freshman also won big .

Big problems at Upland HS. The LA Times has an article that says 2 coaches have been fired and 3 players declared ineligible. It also says that both CIF SS and Upland Unified School District have open investigations regarding the 13 transfers into the football program. Not looking good.

    • GP AKA Green Machine

Those must be starters. They have to be thinking about later on. They could forfeit a lot of games if they play any of these guys and the investigation turns up a new leaf.

    • Not So Fast My Friend

      (Cue sarcasim) Niiiiiiiice.

Upland has bigger problems than CIF sniffing around. Player unity first and foremost, which is usually the first thing to crack when you load a team with guns for hire.

You can always tell when Mrs.DoubtFire73 is in Vegas…! You know how…? When she knows that Bishop AmNOT is gonna get smoked…!

    Yo Opino…….Santa Margarita 42 – NoMas 6…!

This is gonna be a beat down of embarrassing proportions…!

Bishop NoMas is too small in the trenches. Vierra is like 5′ 10″ and his center is even smaller. Moran and McQueen…? Are you kidding me? Knee problems, Back problems…! These guys will not compete agains the 6′ 4″ 300 lbs monsters from SM.

Once Mr. Haynes figures out that they can’t pass the ball, they’ll also figure out that they can’t run the ball either…! Haynes is not good enough to carry the offense to a win. He might try but the SM linebackers are too fast for this kid. Can you say 4th quarter Ice Packs…?

The Lanceritos have absolutely no chance against Santa Margarita…!

    Not in 2013 Either

Let me ask you this…Why would you buy and wear a letteman jacket with a 3rd place patch on it…? Why would you want to display that anywhere in the SGV…? Aren’t you embarrassed…?

Good luck to all the teams of the SGV for safe and well played games . To THE MEN IN BLUE play hard tonight from kick off to the final gun and take it to RSM and leave it all on the field . AMAT WILL SHINE !!!!!

  • Jefe

I like SM tonight but I think Amat will come to play. This isn’t as strong an Eagles team as years past so if Amat is gonna pull an upset, this is the night for it to happen.

However, I still think SM dominates the trenches and the game will be won there for the Eagles.

Amat had a good showing, not a great one, but enough to get the job done for a week 0 game..I posted a few days ago that my only concern would be amat”s DB”s & linebackers, would they be able to withstand RSM assault & slow them down?..& then everyone started blogging that this would be a game of trenches..The bottom line is amat’s D-line & O-line looked solid..I’m still sticking with my original prognosis does Amat have the speed in the secondary to slow down the big playmakers (game changers if you will?) more will be revealed when they start facing opponents who have a more consistent running game & can keep you off balance, tonight’s grading would be a “C+” at best for blowing coverages & yes I didn’t see the overwhelming speed in the secondary that they should possess (Linebacker play was at a (B+) & ortega had one of those games where he can tell his children about..(overall it was a solid performance vs a quality team).I was really impressed with the no huddle offense as some of you old timers can testify that iv’e been pushing for this the last few years, My only suggestion would be that Amat needs to be a throw 1st offense..keep the defense honest & make them respect your throwing game this will open up the ground game..Haynes get’s an (A-) good quality performance..anytime you can put up more than 250yds without a pick..well~ let’s just say any coach will take that, all day- every day…before all you Amat homers get on me..just know that iv’e been here for years giving constructive criticism & have no ties to Amat..but i did say a few days ago also that if Amat could keep this one within 10 points heading to the 4th..we could possibly witness a big finish~ blah~ blah~ blah~ Ok i’ll shoot from the hip now!!! I don’t know the game stats but Amat looked like they dominated the game the last three quarters..score could have been worse if Amat hadn’t given up a couple of home-run balls..& fumbled in the red zone..Do I think this team is the real deal? well~ let’s just say they’re off to a good start~

    • AMAT 73

      12th,
All that matters is 38-28. Defense was there all night long and the Offensive line smoked RSM at the line of scrimmage . As for the game , it was a battle in the trenches and AMAT came out on top . You come on here stating the obvious as anyone who was there last night could clearly see with the talent we have at wide receiver and TE ( Aram did you hear about Archer’s performance ) we should be passing to open up the run game As far as the no huddle it was more of signal in the plays line up and execute. Not a pure hurry up style no huddle that you were pushing . You’re right , you have no ties to AMAT so really why all the bs you post on here .OK so now I’ll shoot from the hip, go follow LBP ,SJB or MD and critic them on OC Varsity or LA Times because truthfully . I for one do not want to see your shiat a whole season all you do is waste blogging space and who cares if you think we are for real because as you say . you have no ties. AMAT DID SHINE .

      • AramT

Didn’t see it. How did Archer do?

        • AMAT 73

          12th,
Speaking of underwear , my post seems to have gotten your chonies wadded pretty far up your azz . Since you have to revert to the basic old man put downs and some of the things that your young pea brain thinks goes with getting older as in your typing comment or bingo so I can guess you are young man under 25 or so . Can’t be 40 or up because at that age 50 something is right around the corner and you’re old enough to it really know it’s not that old . Can’t be 30 something because in one’s youth , you tend to think 30 something is old so you would know better . You’re probably just some frustrated kid who never made the grade on the field after mommy and daddy led you to believe you were the next Brady or Peterson but the coaches saw it different . If you have the nads tell us who your team is so we know where these rocks you throw are coming from , or do you fall under chump line of I don’t have a team I just like to follow hs football . It’s either that or bad case of AMAT envy because I never see you breakdown any other teams game as you do AMAT . Why do you care so much about AMAT ??????

    • Jastrab

I read Los Osos sacked the Alemany QB 7 times. I wonder how mobile the QB and big the OL is for Alemany.

      • Valley Athletics

I read that the Qb is a mobile Qb.

      • 12th man

couple things you can count on year in & year out..Taxes? & that Alemany will have a dual threat QB~

    • Tackle eligible

Mira Costa = shot their wad last year
Los Osos = Just a shell of what they were 5+ years ago
      Taft = City school?
SM = lost a ton of kids from last years team and probably won’t be a contender any tiime in the near future.
Loyola probably played the toughest opponent and lost

I’ll reserve my judgement on the Sera until someone puts up a signature win against a real contender.

      This coming week:
Amat – W vs CH = good SGV Team not Pac-5 quality
ND – W vs Del Oro = not Pac=5 quality
Alemany – W vs Muir = come on, really?
      Loyola – W vs Lakewood = Haven’t been good in 4 years
Crespi – L vs Salpointe = toughest opponent for a Sera Team this week.

      • WCDan

        @Tackle Eligible,
All of a sudden Santa Margarita is not Pac 5 quality? Is it because Amat beat them?

        • observantcat

Say Dan, did you see that game?.. They are by far not the SM teams of the past. Absolutely NO running GAME, that will not bode well in the PAC 5, imagine what’s going to happen when they play the likes of Mater Dei, Poly, St. Bonnie…. it will be a running clock.

          • Lancerito

Ya Ya Ya….same size of line (average 6″4 285 lbs). Same great coaching staff (Welch and Company with 5 State Championships). Running back is a D1 commit (McNichols). Receiver I’m sure is a D1 commit.
Maybe, just maybe the AMAT Defense had a little something to do with that. Maybe there are some great athletes, great coaches, and a great game plan at AMAT.
            Just maybe…

          • Tackle eligible

So, if you replace a D1(PAC12) lineman with someone just as big then obviously that replacement must be just as good? errrrr. Wrong, only thing that means is your found a fat kid to replace an athlete.

          • WCDan

            O-Cat,
No I haven’t seeing the game yet but if it’s online I will take a look at it. As for Santa Margarita not having a run game, even without seeing the game, I get the feeling that Amats defense had something to do with that. I’ve seen them enough times to know that they play at a different intensity level than most of the SGV, very physical and good at stopping the run. Few if any teams in the SGV match that intensity, just calling it like I see it. One other thing, SM number 1s matched up pretty well with CC’s number 1s in their scrimmage last week, actually from what I read, SM drove the ball and looked like the better team so take it for what it’s worth, it’s only a scrimmage and I’m sure both teams kept it pretty vanilla.

          • Valley Athletics

Scrimmage against CC is on YouTube .

          • Valley Athletics

167 yards by mcnichols . 127 yds vs corona centenial in the 40 play scrimmage . Sounds like a running game .

          • AMAT 73

            Ocat,
No running game because our D-line manned up on them and the backers filled the holes. They did break off some nice runs but we stopped them when it counted. McNichols is a fine runner and will have some big numbers. Seems to me you’re painting this game as more of a RSM not being what they were instead of AMAT just taking it to them .All the post prior to the game were having us lose based on their beef on the lines , well we handled them and though we might not have had a sack or maybe just 1-2 you can see their QB was rushed into 5 ints. So yes we did win on the line of scrimmage . By the way , were you at the game ?????

        • Tackle eligible

Not Pac-5 Playoff quality. SGV quality, yes. Amat beating SM will put Amat in a very good position to make the playoffs with one of the available Wildcard spots. SM will not make the playoffs and might very well be a last place team in the Trinity.

          • observantcat

Hopefully so. Or it could be another Servite 2012 season for SM. They just didn’t look the part of a PAC 5 Powerhouse. This year they look hard pressed to finish in the Southwest Div.

          • observantcat

Hopefully so. Or it could be another Servite 2012 season for SM. They just didn’t look the part of a PAC 5 Powerhouse. This year they look hard pressed to finish in the Southwest Div.

          • Tackle eligible

Actually, I think it’s going to be a worse situation for SM then that of Servite last year. After watching the game vs. Amat I think SM will not win a Trinity League game this year, where as Servite was able to beat J Serra last year.

      • Valley Athletics

Won’t be a contender because they have mater dei And St. John bosco in there league . They Are still a good team with a massive line . One if the top athletes jeremy mchnichols . There not the same team as 2 years ago but still a well coached physical team

        • Tackle eligible

SM is not even close to the team they were 1 and 2 years ago. Lost a ton of D1 recruits to graduation and 3 or 4 top players to MV by transfer. Welch is an old school coach that the bratty and spoiled little kids of the SO. OC can’t deal with and neither can their entitled rich parents. The last 2 incoming Freshmen classes have been very thin with kids/parents choosing MV, J Serra, and Tessoro instead of SM. SM Freshmen team this year has only 30 kids on their roster. Welch choose to step down at the end of this year for a reason, he knows that they will not be competitive. Don’t be surprised to see Welch pop up at another high school next year.

          • Valley Athletics

What are u talking about . They lost there players to mission viejo before last season . Suschek , bunte and a key receiver ..they have the same Qb who got playing time last year and moved sweet to receiver .mchnichols was featured on fox sports as one if the best players to watch. Sounds alot better than last year .

          • Tackle eligible

Try not to open your mouth when you clearly have no idea what your talking about. SM has only 1 defensive returner from last years team. Kid’s like Craycraft, Obrien, Begg 2 way starters off to the Pac12, Sorensen, Crane OL & DL off to the Pac12, Stanton QB off to Nebraska, Even with all these kids they were still hurt by the transfers of Modster, Suscheck (D1 recruits class of 2014) to MV prior to the season last year and Bunte 2 games into last season (Pac12 recruit) In addition the only returning d lineman they had transferred to MV prior to this season. Also missing this year is 3 year starting RB Wolpin and 3 yr starting LB Gibbs. In total last years SM team lost 9 impact players from the Offense and 7 impact players from the Defense (10 from the D in total) and you say they should be alot better then last year??? get off the crack pipe you dipsh*t. FYI the starting QB vs Amat is a Sophomore starting his 1st Varsity game. The reason they moved Sweet back to receiver is because SM has no receivers and even Welch couldn’t figure away for Sweet to throw the ball to himself. And the reason McNichols is playing running back is because they have nobody else worth a dam at that position either, that’s why Asante was actively recruiting a running back when he got busted for illegal recruiting. Don’t try to match wits with me when it comes to So. OC Football. I work with many people that have their kids playing high school football in So. OC and one of those people I work with is an Asst. Varsity Coach in the Trinity League who informs me every week on what is going on. Again, your an absolute IDIOT if you think SM is going to be better this year then last. Ha, ha, ha, ha, LMFAO.

          • Valley Athletics

No need to insult me. Just having a disagreement about football . Obviously you know more about RSM than I do . I just know all the things Steve fryer post . Last season he had stories about the transfers to MV . This year he did not have any stories . Only stories he had was about how good the Qb was going to be and there summer performance. He also mentioned how good the line was going to be on both sides . Can’t take anything away from Amat though . Much improved from last year even though they lost 7 players to the next level from last season .

          • Tackle eligible

            Steve Fryer’s a Servite hack.

  • Not So Fast My Friend

Just watched the film on Amat. Great game. Loved how they spread the field with the five wide and if I recall on one occasion showed a six wide set. Koa Haynes looks like he’s improved his passing ability even more from last year. Lots of velocity on the ball and very good accuracy. Defense looked solid, for the most part. Gave up a few big plays, but that’s football.

RSM, on offense, looked sharp at times and confused at others. Made mistakes when they shouldn’t have. One thing that just burns me is not teaching QBs not to force passes. RSMs QB started doing a lot of that. Man, if the first read isn’t there, check down. The one pass he forced across the middle that was intercepted for a touchdown was unnecessary. Even saying that, that doesn’t take away from the game Amat played. They are well coached and they were prepared.

Next up is Chino Hills. I hope they have enough DBs to cover Amat’s passing attack.

    • Tackle eligible

How do you show 6 wide? Not counting the QB the most eligible receivers you can show would be 2 ends and 3 backs = 5 wide?

      • Not So Fast My Friend

I would never blow up plays a high school team has in a public blog, but yes sir, they have a formation with four on one side and two on the other, with a single guard next to the center. :-)

        • Tackle eligible

= an ineligible tackle flexing wide.

        • Timber

Amat DID run an illegal play that resulted in a significant gain but it didn’t make a big difference in the outcome. Essentially they ran 10 personnel with four linemen (GCGT) and a 3 x 2 set. Trouble was on the 3-wide side where there was a guard but no tackle and receiver 2 and 3 were on the line (making #3 ineligible) and #1 was in the backfield. It forced SM to unnecessarily commit an extra LB to the outside on #3 and understandably goofed up the other LB’s coverage on the strongside aligned RB leaving the backside #2 wide freaking open on an inside release up the field. Yes, it’s Pop Warnerish to trick the refs (not hard) but it wasn’t the game winning play. But anyway the flag that wasn’t called was that the strong side #3 WR who was ineligible ran down field while the #1 WR who WAS eligible decided to stay home to “pass block” from the numbers.

    • Valley Athletics

Where did u see the film . Is it online?

      • Valley Athletics

        Oops just noticed the footage

      • Not So Fast My Friend

Nope was not an ineligible tackle flexing wide and not every coach waits until the week they play a team to scout them. Lol.

        • Tackle eligible

BY RULE, you Can NOT and I repeat, can NOT have more then 5 eligible receivers in any formation. You must have 7 on the LOS with 2 of those players being eligible ends/receivers. That leaves you with 4 eligible receivers in the backfield, one of which must take the snap from center which therefore leaves you with 3 eligible receivers out of the backfield, hence only 5 eligible receivers. Anyone else that would legally be split out would have to be an ineligible tackle that is on the LOS with a number ranging from 50-79 and covered by the end. NO SUCH THING AS A 6 WIDE FORMATION WHERE ALL 6 ARE LEGAL.

          • Not So Fast My Friend

I’m not sure I get where you’re feeling the need to challenge what I saw ON FILM, but you’ve got your feet out of bounds. I could see if I told you it was something I saw live so the possibility of me beingwrong about what I saw could make a difference, but this was ON FILM and there were no flags on the play. So here’s my suggestion, if you’re having heartburn over it, then call Bishop Amat, then call RSM, notify the refs they missed a call, then call CIF. While you’re at it, pen a letter to Congress.

Look Pal, your the one that posted about how impressed you were with the 5 and even a 6 wide formation that Amat was running. I simply pointed out to you that 6 wide is either an illegal formation or a flexed/covered Tackle lining up wide. You then posted that I was wrong and that it was not a Tackle lining up wide. If your going to try in match football wits with someone like me who is very well versed in all the rules within the NFHS Football Rule Book then you need to be willing to acknowledge that in your excitement, over what you thought was some type of revolutionary new formation that the Amat brain trust had invented, was in fact either a misinterpretation by you or an illegal formation that should have been flagged.

            ROFL-LMFAO!!!
You sir, most assuredly need to brush up on your reading skills. What I said I was impressed with was them running a five wide set (which I’m not sure they did a lot of that last year). I pointed out a six wide formation as well. I don’t recall giving any indication I was impressed with that formation. I did say I was impressed with Hayes and their WR core. In your zeal to display your astute knowledge of the rule book you questioned how they lined up that way. I told you and you continued on your rant like you’re off your meds. I can care less what the rules say in this regard. It was a formation they lined up in. Period. You made the assumption and inference that i was excited at a revolutionary formation? Are you mental or suffering from a heat related illness? You are obviously not familiar with me or my posts. I’m not familiar with you. That said, move along, there’s nothing more to see here. You might wanna google a rule book blog that you can go impress people with your grasp of the rules. When you learn about the game, then come back and look me up. Match your wits? Lol. That was funny. Thanks. I needed to laugh. If you want to break down fundamentals, chew threw some scripting of plays, then I’m here. You want to carve up the rule book, I’ll post the number to CIF. Please don’t tell me that your a High School Football Coach, because if you are and don’t know the simple basic rules of the game then the future of the game is doomed.

Carmago get hurt don’t see him on either side in second clip.

a couple of players got hurt. Camargo, Bohorquez and Gama. the second half amat had a couple of second stringers in there.looks like they moved prieto to middle line backer and put in the sophomore #93 Vasquez. this kid held his own at DE.

        Hope injuries are not serious.

The positive spin is that BA won despite the injuries. That means they do have some depth. It’s too early to start predicting anything, but winning with 2nd stringer against a strong opponent is a good sign that BA doesn’t have to panic when someone goes down. The only player they truly need to protect is Haynes. He is a strong nominee for Pac 5 All CIF QB. SM is not down, maybe BA is UP! The SGV lacks tons of household names, but this could be a strong year for the SGV in all divisions Bishop has to be thinking that this year could be chance to make a statement. After Upland’s cleansing in the OC, Charter Oak, and Chino Hills have to be thinking that this could be the year! South Hills and Ayala had big nights. The Sierra is going to be as competitive as the Hacienda. With all their top teams having great debuts. The South east is going to be competitive…La Mirada, isz TheMidvalley looks to be down this year. We will see what Mtown will do Friday night. I am sure that the SGV wll be checking in on their debut. All you can say about the lancers is “impressive”. Great team effort.

          Well said my friend.

if Santa Margarita plays like this against Bishop Gorman, there will be a running clock by the middle of the 2nd quarter. Absolutely NO running game. This will make you a bottom dweller in any division with good athletes. Was not impressed at all. Very Very Vanilla. GO AMAT you guys deserve that one.

After seeing the game and watching the video, I must say that the AMAT D-Line and O-Line did a helluva job. They are obviously strong athletic kids and are very well coached. It looks like most of them were outweighed by 50 to 75 lbs but they were taking it to the SM lines. Hats off to both the O-Line and D-Line at AMAT and the coaching staff! You guys did an AWESOME JOB on both sides of the ball! ON BLUE!

This article states that it was AMAT who called and challenged Santa Margarita!

ARTICLE FROM RANCHO SANTA MARGARITA PATCH
By Martin Henderson (Editor) , August 31, 2013.

Santa Margarita Catholic opened the 2013 football season at Bishop Amat but was beaten by another Pac-5 power in the first game of Coach Harry Welch’s final season. The Eagles went into the game ranked sixth in the Southern Section’s Pac-5 preseason poll and Bishop Amat was No. 8.

Key Stats: Sophomore quarterback K.J. Costello passed for 243 yards and touchdowns of 86 and 73 yards to Kyle Sweet, but had five passes intercepted; one interception was returned for a 39-yard score by Adrian Ortega with 1:08 left in the third quarter that gave Amat a 24-21 lead. Jeremy McNichols, a transfer from Lakewood, rushed for 163 yards and scored from the 50 and the 1-yard lines.

Pivotal Moment: Clinging to a 28-24 lead, the Eagles defense gave up a 20-yard pass on fourth-and-11 that led to a 1-yard touchdown run by Adrian Ortega with 4:22 left in the game.

Quotable: “We got a bunch of new kids playing new positions. Give them some time. They’ll get better,” Welch told the Orange County Register.

Records: Bishop Amat (1-0), Santa Margarita (0-1)

Notes: As tough as the pivotal fourth down play was on the Eagles, a backward pass—otherwise known as a lateral—was recovered by Bishop Amat in the final minutes and led to the Lancers’ final touchdown with 1:47 to go. … Without the turnovers, the Eagles probably win, and in that sense, they have reason to be optimistic. … Costello’s first two passes were for touchdowns, making him two-for-two for 159 yards. … Coach Harry Welch said Bishop Amat called the Eagles for a game, and indicated that teams don’t make that call unless they’re pretty good. Bishop Amat is pretty good. … Since Johnny Stanton’s season-ending injury in 2012—at the time, SMCHS was No. 1 in the nation—the Eagles have gone 4-4.

Score: Bishop Amat 38, Santa Margarita Catholic 28

“We got a bunch of new kids playing new positions. Give them some time. They’ll get better,” Welch told the Orange County Register.

    ———————————————————————————-

From what I hear, this is a bit of a disingenuous spin. The kids playing the new positions were nothing more than a handful of kids playing a new position after having switched from another position last season. They practiced and trained in the “new” position all summer long. Moreover, It wasn’t as if a receiver was suddenly switched to lineman. Also, SM was at FULL strength.

Although Welch is leaving after this season, he’s not an idiot. He knows that rankings count, yes even at the high school level, and that he needs to assure the troops and fans that everything is going to be okay. It will be. They have an excellent program.

Give credit where it is due. This game could have gone either way, but Amat persevered. As already noted, Amat lineman easily gave away 50 or so pounds, but they held there own.

As for the video of the game, I believe it might be the 2 YouTube videos that include most of the highlights.

Matt zahn 87 and Brandon arcanado 82 deserve recognition . All this super sophomores talk and no talk about the 2 players making the majority of the catches . Also want to point out that the senior class was the class that came in to Amat at the same time as Hagerty and his staff .

    • Lancerito

All of the boys did a great job and deserve recognition. Matt and Brandon had good games and made some nice catches!
Here is the problem with all the talk about the super sophs, little johnny (fill in the name of your son here), etc., etc.
Did the receiver make a great catch….or was it the QB that threw the ball in the right place…. or was it the lineman and running back who made the blocks to give the QB time to make the throw so the receiver could have the opportunity to make the catch….or was it a great call by a coach who picked up on something the opponent was doing?
On Defense, was it the guy who made the pick…..or was it the pressure the D-Line and Linebackers put on the QB to hurry a throw that created the opportunity for the pick? Was it the LB or Safety who made a great tackle……or was it the D-Line that kept the OL occupied and allowed the LB or Safety to make the play….or was it the Blitz called by the coach that put everyone in a position to be successful?
In my opinion it was everyone doing their job and all the “I, I, I, I” talk should be “We, We, We, We” as in our Lancer Team played a great game on Friday night! Go AMAT!

not since 1995, He’s a sad human being to be constantly writing about BA over and over. He’s bitter for either his son never being able to play 1 down at Amat or not being an athlete just like his father. Some people are bitter to the end of their life and he is just one of many. The players determine the outcome, no one else. Our opinion doesn’t matter it’s just that.
