Tribskin Pick’em; Your Predictions and Ours .. Chino Hills-Amat, South Hills-Bonita, Monrovia-Ayala headline

Aram Tolegian and I will go head-to-head picking football games throughout the season. He edged me out the past two seasons, but it’s not happening this year, not when we’re playing for a Slater’s 50-50 burger.

Aram Tolegian (13-5, last week); (13-5, season total)
Fred Robledo (14-4, last week); (14-4, season total)

pickem

Last week: I edged Aram in week 0, but it was a good week for both of us. We both missed taking Bosco Tech over Wilson, Keppel over Ganesha and El Dorado over Ayala. Aram got me taking Bishop Amat over Santa Margarita, but I picked up a game taking Bonita over San Dimas and Duarte over Valley Christian.

This week: Obviously, there are a few big games that stand out, like Chino Hills and Bishop Amat. After what happened in last year’s thriller, which ended in a 48-48 tie on a few controversial calls down the stretch, it’s huge again, especially given Chino Hills’ smackdown of Arlington and Amat’s big win over Santa Margarita last week. In recent years, however, I never pick against Amat in area games and I’ve been rewarded every time so I’m not changing now. South Hills and Bonita is another great one given each teams’ week 0 performance. Tell you what, I like the Huskies. Another super game to watch is Ayala at Monrovia. You know, the three-time champ Super Cats may be great in the Mid-Valley and Rio Hondo, but when they step up in class, the big boys usually get ‘em. But this time I like the ‘Cats for one reason. KURT SCOBY. He is, big-boy football.

        • Mike Robledo

wait.. FJ’s been on losing end of picks since 2010? who did he pick against in ’09?

          • Steve Ramirez

Fred won against me in 2008 and 09

    • Steve Ramirez

      He paid me for 2010…CPK!

In games where you both agree there are two that I see differently. I have Norwalk over DBar. This maybe the year Norwalk gets over the hump. I have Claremont over Glendora based on no particular reason other than I like the Wolfpack coaching.and QB.

    • disqus_wD2qThRkJd

Why even mention DB, you have them losing the whole schedule!

    • disqus_wD2qThRkJd

You might want to take a closer look at Norwalk , they are not the team they were last yr! They barely got by Cabrillo who had a losing record last yr!

    • G Daddy 2

Norwalk RB will run for over 200 yards DBar QB will throw over 325 yards. I’ll take DBar

      • disqus_wD2qThRkJd

I agree but not sure how to take their close win over a weak Cabrillo team??

  • AZTEC PRIDE

Alright Fred n Aram have AZUSA projected to win, Cal preps has Whitter winning 21 -17,??? Let me see who should I go with??? No question about it FRED n Aram!!! LOL… Okay AZUSA their it is,the Guru’s have SPOKEN! Lets go Coach SCHERF!

  • Not So Fast My Friend

Last year I said CH vs Amat was too close to call. If I recall it was going to come down to either a TD or a FG that separated the two. The game ended in a dramatic fashion, with both schools doing their version of the fast and the furious. Personally I thought it was one of the best games all year.

This year has the makings of probably a more interesting game. Amat looks more explosive and CH looks more balanced and a lot tougher.

QB – Hayes is the difference maker here and Amat gets the edge at QB.
RB – Amat against RSM, threw the ball a lot, so I don’t have enough to evaluate their RBs. CH has two that remind me of LenDale White and Reggie Bush. Not in explosiveness, but in being able to make large runs from small holes. Both RBs run hard. Edge to CH.

WRs – Last year CH clearly had more WRs than Amat. Now it’s reversed. Amat has a nice WR core that Hayes looks comfortable with. CH maybe two. One is a playmaker that they need to get the ball in space to more and the other has really good hands. Edge Amat.

OLine – Even. Both lines block well and both can block better.

DLine – Amat’s front went against RSM and not only held their own, but bought enough to keep RSMs QB from being comfortable in the pocket. CHs front routinely played in the backfield of Arlingtons offense. If this is any indication, it could be problematic for other teams. Both Dlines are good with CH getting maybe just a very slight edge but it’s too close to call. Even.

LBs – We’ll just keep this simple. Even.

DBs – CHs DBs look 100% fundamentally better than last year. More aggressive too but when matched up WR vs DB, I think Amat has more capable WRs than CH has DBs. When balanced against Amat’s DBs who look well coached, I give the edge to Amat.

Special Teams – slight edge to CH.

I’m guessing this game, of two very talented and well coached teams has the potential to be close again. And it may come down to ST play. But I doubt it. I think Amat’s strength at QB vs CHs lack of it is the difference offensively. However, where last time CHs offense kept them in the game, this year their defense does. So for 2013, minus the referees, it’s a TD or a FG that decides the winner. Worst case two TDs and that edge goes to Amat.

    • OuttaYourMindTrib

QB is the HUGE difference maker in this game and frankly, their season. CH doesn’t have one. What they have is some kid (bless his heart) that wants to play the position and came to CH because they don’t have one in their system and beat some other poor soul out for the job.

the name of the city is Rancho Santa Margarita…the name of the coed Cathiloc HS in said city is Santa Margarita…very hard to give credence to your takes when you don’t know the difference between the 2

      • Not So Fast My Friend

You do realize you’re the only one that feels that needs to be clarified.

        • Fiala

I felt it needed clarification too.

          • Not So Fast My Friend

Then you’re in good company. :-)

    • SGV Dad

I think on a neutral field Amat wins by 2 TD’s, and at Chino Hills Amat wins by 10 points. At Keifer, Amat will be up three scores by the end of the third quarter, and Haggerty will pull the starters to start the fourth quarter. CH might score in that fourth quarter, but in the end Amat wins by 17-21 points.

      • Not So Fast My Friend

I thought about the home field for BA, but figured given the offsets between their O and CH’s defense, I just skipped it. But you’re right.

  • Not So Fast My Friend

    Fred, blocked commentary?

  • GP AKA Green Machine

BA vs CH- It’s Simple, CHills won’t win at Keifer…Can’t win at Keifer…
    Pick: BA by 14

Bonita vs South Hills- Both rolled Midvalley teams. Bonita is sky high, but SH can’t afford to lose to lower Div Teams. Especially with CH and CO coming up in the future.
    Pick: South Hills by 3

San Dimas vs Los Altos- Upper Division, tough running hard hitting Los Al will be too much at home for the young Saints.
    Pick: Los Altos by 14

DBar vs Norwalk- Who is better Montebello or LB Cabrillo? Norwalk will run the ball, and play keep away to win by 10.
    Pick: Nowalk by 10

Damien vs OLU – Program victory for OLU
    Pick: OLU by 21 +

West Covina vs LB Wilson- Wilson is either going to bounce back from week 1 or get beat. West Covina is better the Moore league bottom dwellers..

    Pick West Co by 7

La Habra vs La Mirada- Fred/ Aram drop dat new LM video of the Tesoro game… Which one of the 25 uniform combos did the sport? Mazoztta and LH will be focused, Moschetti and LM will be looking for cameras
    Pick: LH by 14

Monrovia vs Ayala- Kurt Scoby aka (Big Boy)
    Pick: Monrovia by 10

    • AZTEC PRIDE

I would like to know all your picks Green Machine. LOL…

      • GP AKA Green Machine

My most important pick of the day

Azusa vs Whittier-Azusa is now a respectable football program. Whittier is upper division with a 1-0 head start on the Aztecs.
        Pick: Whittier by 7

        • AZTEC PRIDE

Why did I ask! LOL… Good looking , and say hello to Coach Schuster. Unless your AKA SHUSTER. Haha…

        • AZTEC PRIDE

I just checked out Whitters schedule and they play much harder teams in their league. Doesn’t compare to the Montview league, so winning Whitter would be a GREAT WIN! I do like the fact Coach Scherf is playing respectable teams! This helps entering league play and maybe playing in the playoffs! COME ON AZTECS!

Are you still mad at West Covina Aram?
