CIF-SOUTHERN SECTION FOOTBALL RANKINGS
PAC-5 DIVISION

1. St. John Bosco (2-0), 2. Mater Dei (2-0), 3. Mission Viejo (2-0), 4. Bishop Amat (2-0), 5. Alemany (2-0), 6. Oaks Christian (2-0), 7. Servite (1-1), 8. Long Beach Poly (1-1), 9. St. Bonaventure (1-1), 10. Sherman Oaks Notre Dame (2-0).
Fred’s thoughts: Bishop Amat isn’t the fourth-best in the Pac-5. You know it, I know it, but it’s a great ranking. If teams ahead of them keep falling and the Lancers go undefeated until league, who knows, could Amat be No. 1 at some point?

SOUTHEAST DIVISION
1. Norwalk (2-0), 2. Diamond Ranch (2-0), 3. Downey (1-1), 4. Santa Fe (2-0), 5. La Serna (1-1), 6. La Mirada (0-2), 7. West Covina (2-0), 8. Bonita (2-0), 9. Los Altos (2-0), 10. Muir (1-1).
Fred’s Thoughts: Diamond Ranch No. 2? Could this be the year Roddy Layton finally gets his ring? Much respect for them but very little respect for West Covina and Bonita, particularly with the quality wins both have. And how is 0-2 La Mirada ranked ahead of both?

INLAND DIVISION
1. Corona Centennial (2-0), 2. Vista Murrieta (1-0), 3. Rancho Cucamonga (2-0), 4. Murrieta Valley (2-0), 5. Redlands East Valley (1-0), 6. Roosevelt (2-0), 7. Chino Hills (1-1), 8. Eisenhower (2-0), 9. Corona Santiago (0-2), 10. Charter Oak (0-1).
Fred’s thoughts: Shocked that Upland, the team everyone talked about in the summer because of transfers, is no longer ranked after 0-2 start. Everyone else where they should be.

MID-VALLEY DIVISION
1. Monrovia (1-0), 2. Paraclete (1-1), 3. Northview (2-0), 4. Windwward (2-0), 5. Viewpoint (2-1), 6. San Marino (1-0), 7. Arroyo (1-1), 8. Sierra Canyon (0-2), 9. Gabrielino (2-0), 10. Baldwin Park (2-0).
Fred’s thoughts: The Mid-Valley was never known to be a super power, but this is the worst it’s been since it was created. Why don’t you just hand Monrovia their fourth straight trophy now.

NORTHWEST DIVISION
1. Bishop Diego (2-0), 2. Nordoff (2-0), 3. Compton Centennial (1-1), 4. Carpinteria (2-0), 5. El Segundo (1-0), 6. Oak Park (1-1), 7. Whittier Chrisitan (2-0), 8. La Salle (1-1), 9. Bishop Montgomery (2-0), 10. Santa Paula (2-0), 11. La Puente (1-1).
Fred’s thoughts: Still wondering how anyone believes sending the Montview to the Northwest is relief from the Mid-Valley.

I’m still waiting for your response on Twitter admitting that South Hills lost the toss and received the opening kickoff.

    • Steve Ramirez

Usually the team that receives the opening kickoff does so, because it lost the toss.

      • Aaron

Look at the traffic on twitter.

        • Steve Ramirez

What does that have to do with KO question?

  • GP AKA Green Machine

Fred BA needs to keep their eyes on the prize. It’s Rancho this week. Rankings mean absolutely nothing. Seeding is slightly more important, but at the end of the day there are no easy games in Pac5 play…

Southeast. When it’s all Said and Done. Downey vs Bonita in Finals

Midvalley-Mtown’s season rides on the SHills/SF games. After that it’s Regional State bowl time. Sad but true.

    • Saints Fan

Greenie, it also depends on Scoby staying healthy. With Jones out with a collar bone injury, exactly how long we will see, but if Scoby goes down to injury that changes everything. So, with that said, does it still make sense for Maddox to let his “high rev motor” operate on defense as well where anything can happen? Now, Scoby from what I recall has not had injury issues, and there is arguably no one any stronger than him in most divisions, but knee’s, ankles, ??? can get tweeked when a person is bustin in from the outside…. Now before you and the rest of the Monrovia clan start with the …. “reload” all the other talent, yes you are right, but Scoby is your ticket to the State Bowl. Potts can and will carry a very long way… but….. and you know it.

      • GP AKA Green Machine

True…and Injury to either would destroy our chances at a state bowl and probably a CIF title. We are really young. Those two will carry the youth.

    Hey Fred,
If Santa Margarita was ranked #4 at the beginning of the season, you probably would have agreed with that.
Now that AMAT beat them, you don’t think AMAT belongs at the #4 spot???
It’s still early and AMAT has a lot of things to work on, but I think you should give credit where credit is due.
AMAT has taken care of business on the field the 1st 2 weeks.
    Keep it up BIG BLUE!

  • 12th man

Is Amat a #4 team? I don’t have a problem with that at this time..There’s only 2 other teams you could put in that spot (Oaks Christian or Alemany) The only reason why BA is #4 is because of their strength of schedule wins over (Santa Margarita & Chino Hills) I honestly don’t see them losing that spot unless they don’t produce convincing wins over St.paul & Culver City (blowouts) Once league starts in the pac5 you should get a clearer picture of who your top 5 teams really are..expect SJB & MD to keep the top billing~

  • Wells

Fred — if you find out which coach puts together the Southwest top ten you will find the answer to your last question. Some coaches are amazingly impartial when it comes to polls; it is possible that the Southwest coach may not be.

  • 12th man

Many who follow Amat including Fred were concerned with Santa Margarita when the schedule came out…they said that’s probably the only team that would beat them non-league…did they get it right? From what i’m hearing Rancho Cucamonga has a legit defense..they have yet to face a high powered offense like Amat so this one could be interesting to say the least..Who wins when the game comes down to a high powered offense vs a legit stubborn defense? Let’s find out just how accurate “Calpreps” is? They have RC over BA 28-26

    • Lancer_Land

Rancho and AMAT are 2 pretty evenly matched teams. MaxPreps has AMAT at # 21 in the state and Rancho at # 25 in the state. We’re looking for another great effort from our Lancers on Friday night.

Here are our top 6 leaders on each side of the ball on the field thru 2 games.

      Offense:

      4 K. Haynes (Sr) – 594 Total Yards
      82 B. Arconado (Jr) – 233 Total Yards
      87 M. Zahn (Sr) – 172 Total Yards
      19 A. Ortega (Sr) – 160 Total Yards
      5 A. Camargo (Jr) – 98 Total Yards
      2 D. Vazquez (Sr) – 85 Total Yards

      Defense:

      20 C. Prieto (Sr) – 24 Tackles
      45 C. Wiley (Jr) – 21 Tackles
      5 A. Camargo (Jr) – 19 Tackles
      8 M. Gonzales (Sr) – 15 Tackles
      19 A. Ortega (Sr) – 14 Tackles
      6 J. Chavez (Sr) – 8 Tackles

Lets keep up the hard work on Friday night Lancers. ON BLUE!

    • Valley Athletics

Remember what happened to Rancho last year when they where highly ranked and lost to Servite . But I do agree , Rancho is always solid on defense and have some good backs in mayo and Mohammed . One is big and powerful the other fast and shifty . They did lose there number one DB to Upland right before season started in kameron Powell . It’s hard to get a true gage of them because if who they played . Redlands is weak . norco only played 1 game . Norco has big O line and that’s all I heard about then . Lost there Qb and coach .this could be there toughest opponent of preseason .

  • Arthur Fonzarello

Of course an argument can be made that Amat is not a #4 team since the season is young. However, Amat has consistently shown that they can beat ANY team on a given day.

    • MoreKetchup

We have yet to see that they can beat any team on any given day.

      • Royal Blue Thunder

When you find a way to beat the Pac-5′s 4th rated team (formerly Santa Margarita), especially with the Pac-5 ranked #6 in the nation…That’s an ENTIRE nation….I think it’s safe to say that Amat just might be able to beat any team no any given day.
Santa Margarita only lost to behemoth Bishop Gorman (coming off a 41-17 beat down on Servite) by a mere 3 points.

        • MoreKetchup

But when they find themselves almost being beaten by Chino Hills, It is safe to say that they CAN be beat.

          • GP AKA Green Machine

but you have to say by a pac 5 opponent. RC would be the last non pac 5 team with a chance to take down the Lancers

          • AMAT 73

            Ketchup,
I don’t believe anyone has ever said we can’t be beat by any given team on any given day . And since we don’t play horseshoes almost doesn’t count in the CH game . But that’s all behind us and the given team this week is RC . Should be another tough battle with another top ranked Inland team and AMAT must play their best to get another W .

          • MoreKetchup

I am not trying to imply in anyway that Amat is bad in any way. I just believe league is when we truly see what teams such as Amat are about.

          • 1st and goal

I dont think that Amat was “almost beaten” in this game. They were challenged but not almost beaten. CH would have had to have tied the game or taken the lead and that did not happen. I do applaud the Huskys for bringing it and leaving it out on the field. I do hope that this game can be renewed and replayed again in the future.

    • Not So Fast My Friend

I’d pass on the celebratory chest thump. A play here and a play there against Chino Hills and Amat could easily be 1 and 1, considering CH had the momentum going into the last two minutes. Doesn’t take away from Amat’s win, but it certainly doesn’t give credence to “… Amat has consistently shown that they can beat ANY team on a given day.” You beat RSM but you won against CH. Big difference. ;-)

      • Royal Blue Thunder

I think what The Fonz is referring to are the big time Amat wins within the past 5 years, which include St. Bonaventure, Mater Dei, Servite, and now Santa Margarita. Bishop Amat was the underdog in all of these victories.
And Chino Hills never had the lead in the game. They were down 35-14 and rallied back, but they were never in the driver’s seat. And when Chino Hills had their chance at the end, the Amat defense stepped up and stopped them when they had to. That’s beating a team. On the contrary, the lead in the Santa Margarita game changed several times. It was a much closer contest with SM throwing 5 interceptions…that’s a win not a beating lol.

        • Arthur Fonzarello

Exactly. Amat was a major underdog in all of these games and they won because the coaching staff and young men didn’t doubt themselves. Unlike some others, myself included.

        • Not So Fast My Friend

Thank you for the clarification. Lol.

        • 12th man

Amat was an underdog to all those teams you mentioned except for “Santa Margarita”~ Calpreps had Amat winning & many sports analyst from the O.C were still not sure how the sophomore QB would fare in his 1st game? for that reason they also considered SM an underdog ..like coach Welch said “any time a team calls us for a game..they probably have a very good team”

      • Arthur Fonzarello

        Mr. Corso,

No. I’m correct. I said on a GIVEN day, not ANY given day, which they have done. And please, my friends call me the The Fonz. 100 points to you for being the first to pick up on that. Then again, Fonzarelli was already taken so it’s a stretch. Either way, 100 points.

      • AMAT 73

        NSFMF,
Beat , won , sqeaked by , got lucky , I will take them all because they equal a W. Also a play here or there by our defense and you were looking at a rout and if you were there it crossed your mind , because I know it crossed mine , but let’s just leave it at a good game and as I said we will take the W . I don’t think we have trap games in preseason such as CC or the slime because all games will be tough wins . Every team wants to take down AMAT so we cannot afford to overlook ant opponent . The slime game is always tough just because of who we play , our hated rivals . Even though some of todays players have only faced them once they fully know the implications of this game . I don’t think any of the Faithful are looking toan unbeaten season as that is a tough order when you play in the Serra but who knows. And yes AMAT can beat any team on a given day no matter what the oppositions fans want to call the loss in their eyes . Good luck to the Huskies this week .

        • Not So Fast My Friend

LOL. I **knew** you’d reply. Lol. I’m just throwing rocks in the water. Lol.

          • AMAT 73

            NSFMF,
Throwing rocks in the wrong pond . ha ha ha ha ha

  • Not So Fast My Friend

While the Amat faithful enjoy their win against Chino Hills (it was a win, not a beating), and the usual suspects start hyperventilating over the possibilities, breathe for a minute. BA still has RC (or Rancho Cucamonga for those that need clarification) and Alemany as the biggest threats to a zero loss season. Crespi depending on how they mature during the season under Troy Thomas will be interesting, or not by the time that game rolls around. The biggest issue for BA is watching out for trap games. Their schedule is loaded with land mines. I will say this is a very athletic BA team, so enjoy the ride. :-)

    • Valley Athletics

Notre dame will be tough also . Only easy games are St. Paul and culver city .
