Tribskin Pick’em: Hacienda, Valle Vista and Montview League ready for battle plus Glendora at Charter Oak, South Hills at Monrovia

Aram Tolegian and I will go head-to-head picking football games throughout the season. He edged me out the past two seasons, but it’s not happening this year, not when we’re playing for a Slater’s 50-50 burger.

Aram Tolegian (19-2, last week); (57-29, season total)
Fred Robledo (18-3, last week); (58-28, season total)

pickem

Last week: Aram and I followed one of our worst weeks in Trib’skin history with one of our best, Aram finishing 19-2 while I went 18-3 to keep a one-game lead on the season.

This week: The Hacienda, Valle Vista and Montview leagues get going this week, and nothing better than winless and dangerous San Dimas going against the areas biggest surprise, undefeated Northview at the District. We’ll know if Northview’s the real deal or if San Dimas is where it is because of a tough schedule. I’m buying the Vikes, they’ve been too good to take a step back. Great openers in the Hacienda with Diamond Bar at Bonita and Diamond Ranch at West Covina. I don’t feel strong about either, but I’m going with Diamond Bar and Diamond Ranch. In the Montview, Duarte and Azusa could tell us a lot. I think the winner will compete with La Puente for the league title. Take Azusa. In others, I like Charter Oak to get its first win vs. Glendora, Monrovia to beat South Hills and for Bishop Amat to beat St. Paul by at least four touchdowns.

Last week was one of favorite Monrovia games of all time…To Battle through injuries, start a Freshman at QB, and win was so exciting. Monrovia insiders knew this was going to be a close one. I couldn’t have been more proud of the Cats. In the past we have lost those games. However our Defense although tired and on the field all night, held SD to 1 TD. Kurt Scoby hit a walk off home run to win it on Fox sports. Just great! South Hills brings in a physical big team with Size. Monrovia is 1-2 verses the Huskies and we need this one bad. Forget about the St Francis game…this one is huge for us.
I like Bonita Over Dbar, Peyton is going to be the difference and defense is going to be the difference. I like SD over Bonita. I think the saints Know they can play…they just have to score in the red zone and use Noah Reep more. Z put his young team through the fire and they should be ready. I like Glendora over CO…I don’t know why, but the last time CO was young…Glendora beat them at Citrus…and they almost beat them them at CO as well. I think West bounces back…Honestly…WC needs a QB… Their lineman are beast!!! Damien and St Francis lock horns…two like programs, that need to stay in stride. Both have big games the next two weeks…before going into the tough respective uppper division leagues where they face teams So Cal Ranked teams like Chino Hills and Serra. Great week of football coming up.

I’ll give it to you because of the injuries, but to narrowly beat SD was not impressive at all. SD is terrible this season, and they took you guys to the wire, forget the final score. But in the end, a win is a win. By the way, Northview will spank SD, and then you’ll understand what I mean about your very nonimpressive win over SD.

      • Saints Fan

SGV FB Dad — with all due respect, it ain’t gonna happen. If the Defense comes out with the FIRE it showed last week, Northview doesn’t have a kid on the team who carries Scoby’s jock strap. Northview has played well, but SD grew up last week after taking punches the previous 3 weeks and being unsure how to respond. Am I guaranteeing a win. NO, but I will guarantee a spanking WILL NOT happen. Also, I can guarantee the SD Defense will come out fired up Friday. The only question is going to be offense and I’m gonna leave that one alone for now.

        • SGV FB Dad

          Saints Fan,

I apologize for any disrespect, just voicing my opinion. I was at the first game, and SD looked lost. After 4 losses and zero wins, I just don’t see them as a good team. Northview is tearing it up. I know SD is struggling on offense, but even the defense is shaky. I see Northview winning and winning big, sorry…..but just my opinion.

          • Saints Fan

I will fully admit, we have looked like crap, and I am getting a little punchy as I have to sit there and look at it week after week. But go check out FoxSports PrepZone. The game is archived. You watch that and you will NOT see the same Defense you witnessed vs Bonita, Los Altos or even Diamond Bar…. those kids found something in the week leading up to Monrovia which is always a huge game for SD… but here is a newsflash…. the Northview game is just as big for SD so I fully expect the same intensity. We need to get more imaginative with the offense, we do not have the speed we have had previously and due to that have not softened up any defenses. I hope Northview has the same opinion that an 0-4 SD team isn’t very good. But I think their coaching staff is too good for that, but one thing is for sure, an 0-4 SD team isn’t the same as the fluff they have faced so far and Northview (a very very good team) is not Monrovia, Los Altos, Bonita or even Diamond Bar. So you can throw out the 0-4 and throw out the 4-0 — more appropriate records are 0-0 and most likely the League Championship in the opening Weekend…. it will be a battle.

          • GP AKA Green Machine

Saint’s Stop Saying that…. No disrespect, but that’s fools gold. SGV makes some solid points. You still have not corrected anything in the Secondary, and you have not proven you can play well against a balanced team. Mtown was run only that night. This week you will be playing a seasoned varsity QB not a freshman straight from Pop Warner, seeing his first snaps. Don’t Worry, you are going to see a lot of Mr Bryant in the Future….and he is going to light SD next year as a tenth grader. I still have you all winning, but not by much…how are you going to score more the 21 pts? I would like to know. You are going to need 31 pts to win this one.

          • Saints Fan

Seriously Greenie, you have made your flippin Point several times…. On multiple boards now … you gonna follow me around to all my Flippin Posts and throw in your same old comments. Whistle Whistle, come on boy… follow me here you go….come here…
Here is your F’n newsflash…. the comments above were specific in nature to one poster who was basing his entire analysis on seeing one game – Bonita…. these comments are now 2 days old….. If you think that Defense is the same kids who were playing their first Varsity game A MONTH ago, then you should go back to whatever you smoke to get you through the day…. Are they Perfect, NOPE…. Are they fast enough / strong enough to follow your ALL MIGHTY MONROVIA WR core, YOUR ALL MIGHTY QB, YOUR ALL MIGHTY SCOBY…. NO, not today…. Are they going to be able to handle your ALL WORLD returners next year…. well, next year will tell the story… seriously man, you are now already talking smack about NEXT YEAR…. you are a classic.
I had typed a whole bunch more going on and on, but you know what, I deleted it…. whatever, Not worth the clicks of my keyboard…. thanks for your analysis, good luck the rest of the way….. whistle whistle, where you gonna follow me next….. no worries, Bro, I’m out ! you won’t have to search too far…

      • GP AKA Green Machine

What was impressive was that our offense was on one leg. The Frosh Threw 2 opening tds, then followed those scores up with 2 picks which put SD in the red zone. Our WR were open all night, but the young cat missed a few throws. Coach maddox put the clamps on the Frosh throwing after 10 attempts He went 2-8 with 2 TDS..The refs gave SD a Helmet to helmet penalty to convert on 4th down, and PI to both placing SD in the redzone. They punched one in. After that they did not score. We still won by 2 scores. If Potts plays you are looking at 40-7 score. SD success was based all on Freshman Turnovers and very vanilla playbook/ play calling. But he did not fumble any snaps!!!

        • Saints Fan

Damn greenie, I been quiet ever since Friday night just takin it all in, I wanna back you man, but sometimes you always come back with this crap. First, SD had a BS helmet to helmet call that gave Monrovia a continued drive and great field position. Those Ref’s sucked and way more flags SD’s way no way you can bs about that. One in particular negated an SD first down on a Crossing pass play into Cat’s territory , when the 2 ton ref finished marking it off we had lost almost 40 yards due to “spot of foul”. Ended a drive where we were moving the ball. Of course you were on 1 Leg, but as you and all the Monrovia Honks always tell “the valley” — “we have athletes all over the field, we just reload” blah blah blah… Yah, and if we had Jake Payton, you lose Bro ! I absolutely will give you frosh QB missed 2 open potential TD passes. He did a great job stepping in and handling it, I absolutely give him that. But that is how the game goes. if a little more variety used offensively, SD puts a couple more up as well. Go look at Film again sir, OUR WR were open on many occasions as well, we just can’t seem to open our eyes and see them. We could have ran slants all night long, as you as well were “packin’ the box with 8 guy’s”. Oh and by the way, one of those Picks was one of the best “catches” that field has seen, frosh didn’t throw it, SD DB “took” it away by jumping the route and making a diving catch.
Man I am one of the first to give Monrovia their props, Scoby is a beast, you have athletes galore. The WR Gillespie has afterburner speed man I will give him that. Young Lad Johnson is a seriously good back who is gonna give the valley fits the next few years. You wanna sit there and talk about vanilla play calling. Seriously, other than a couple of Potts designed scrambles, looked to me like the same offense that ran up 489 yards on the ground vs Arcadia.
Your too busy trying to defend your cat’s honor when some dudes come out here and bash the cat’s cuz San Dimas sucks…. seems to me maybe SD stepped it up a little and is growing as a young team. Maybe Monrovia isn’t the “only team in the valley” who starts off slow….

          • GP AKA Green Machine

Let’s make this short and sweet…If the Frosh completes only 2 passes, and both of them are TD’s, what do you think our starter would have done? Your DB’s did not cover our WR’s at all. They were open the whole game, and if we were throwing…you can put 2 more scores on the board. Saying that your D stepped it up is a poor analysis of this game. You know, and I know, that Monrovia beat you with a handicap. The D held you to 13 pts. The only could only run the ball, and still out rushed you, and won by 2 scores…I don’t see where you are coming from.

    • Let Them Play

Greenie…Love the predictions but there is one small factor not many know about. Jake Payton hurt his knee Friday. MCL injury, taken off on a stretcher. Might want to rethink that pick. Have fun with the Huskies

      • IC Green

Whoa there, LTP! Don’t be surprised if Payton plays….

      • Ba Ba Bohi

I think Payton will play, he was walking around the field after the game, and standing on the sidelines before that. Either way…Loy looked good, and Diebold started to use that speed he has to run the ball when receivers weren’t open, he had 160 yards rushing. There were also 2-3 dropped touchdowns. The game shouldn’t have been close, but missed opportunities and Payton going down tightened it up. Bonita’s Defense needs to step it back up and play with the energy of the first 3-games!

        • IC Green

Diebold had a great game running the ball and was able to show his speed but he missed some open receivers and had some drops as well. He’s the best QB by far at Bonita but he has a habit of forcing the ball into coverage when others are wide open. He needs Podley in the crows nest.

          • Ba Ba Bohi

Agreed! That nest is important, but a part time Podley is not the answer, for administrative duties are time consuming. They need to hire a dedicated offensive minded O-coordinator (yesterday)! Bonita’s offensive scheme is so bad with Medrano calling the plays! There is no rhythm to the offensive play calling, it is a though he using “playbook roulette” to call the plays. When a play works, he runs it over and over again. It is not fair to the receivers, they are not getting any separation. You can put it on the QB…but high school QB’s miss throws and coverage reads, high school receivers drop balls. Give these kids a chance to correct and learn from their mistakes. The fact that Medrano (a defensive coach) chooses to forgo the need for an offensive coordinator…puts it all on the coaches in my book. Call me old oldschool.

          • IC Green

Absolutely agree Bohi. Bonita is winning games in spite of the coaching on offense.

          • GP AKA Green Machine

They have a season O Coordinator in Coach Jones…They should lean on him a little bit more his experience. He knows his stuff.

          • IC Green

You’ve got to be kidding me. No way.

      • GP AKA Green Machine

No Way Payton is out!!! I am going to stick with my pick. I still think DBars Defense is suspect. Plus Although Peterson has played, Mcqueen and that defense get after it. If they rough up Peterson, they win.

        • Ba Ba Bohi

I absolutely agree with your description of Coach Jones. Bonita is lucky to have him. He is a seasoned college level coach. It baffles me that they haven’t expanded his coaching duties from receivers to O-Coordinator! He seems very frustrated on the sidelines, as though he is licking his chops to get a crack at running that offense…good call Green Machine!

          • GP AKA Green Machine

He did say he was coaching WR’s. What a waste…Bonita has similar weapons to what he had at Mtown. If he was calling the plays for Bo hi, he would slap a fullback in front of Payton, and run more complicated routes combinations. Your coach is bubble screen happy. That Bo hi offense could be a lot better. I wish we had coach Jones.

  • BGlancer

I thought we played Warren this week?

  • Go Deep

    Okay,
Glendora gets a #3 ranking in your ranking system
Charter Oak is #7 in your ranking system.
You pick Charter Oak over Glendora in your prediction.
Why not rate Charter Oak where they belong @ #3?
They are obviously better in your mind than Glendora.
    You Writers ???

  • chivo

Bell Gardens plays Warren , not El Monte.
