Tribune Super 35 Rankings and Leaderboard: Bishop Amat, Chino Hills far ahead of the pack

hagerty
TRIBUNE SUPER 35 RANKINGS
1. Bishop Amat (3-1)
— The Lancers have been far from perfect, but they’re getting wins and beating Charter Oak again was important for its rep in the area. They should breathe a little easier with a gimmie at St. Paul next.
2. Chino Hills (3-1) – Has without a doubt become the Sierra League favorite and not sure if anyone will touch them in league after how it dismantled West Covina and beat Tesoro. Hey, they’re that good.
3. Glendora (3-0) — Wins over Bonita, Ayala with Charter Oak up next. You have to give it up to the Tartans. They might not be Baseline league ready, but they’re still a darn-good Sierra-type team.
4. Los Altos (4-0) — Is it the areas fourth-best team? I’m not so sure, but they’ve earned this spot and will have several chances to prove it in the Hacienda.
5. Bonita (3-1) – Starting to wonder after narrowly escaping a Claremont team that was defeated by Walnut a week earlier. Inconsistency? That was the Bearcats’ problem last year too.
6. South Hills (2-1) – Huskies had a week to rest to get ready for Monrovia and has to feel better about its chances after San Dimas gave the ‘Cats all it could handle last week.
7. Charter Oak (0-3) — Don’t care what the record is, they’re still the second-best in the Sierra behind Chino Hills. I’m not ready to sell, they still do so many things well.
8. Northview (4-0) — This is the week they get to earn their ranking, taking on defending Valle Vista league champ San Dimas in the league opener.
9. West Covina (2-2) – After a promising 2-0 start, the Bulldogs have lost two straight, though losing to South Hills and Chino Hills is nothing for fans to worry about. If they beat Diamond Ranch this week, they’re back on track.
10. Damien (2-1) — Are the Spartans Sierra League contenders? Maybe not a league title, but the past two weeks show they could be one of the top three. If they win at St. Francis Friday, then they really shoot up the rankings.
The Rest: 11. Diamond Ranch (3-1); 12. Ayala (2-2); 13. Diamond Bar (3-1); 14. Baldwin Park (4-0); 15. Arroyo (3-1); 16. Pomona (4-0); ); 17. San Dimas (0-4); 18. La Puente (2-1); 19. Rosemead (2-1); 20. Rowland (2-2); 21. Covina (2-2); 22. Walnut (1-3); 23. Azusa (1-2); 24. Claremont (1-3); 25. Mountain View (2-1); 26. El Monte (1-3), 27. Workman (2-1); 28. So let’s get this straight ” Los Altos (4-0) — Is it the areas fourth-best team? I’m not so sure, but they’ve earned this spot and will have several chances to prove it in the Hacienda.” Is #4 and “Bonita (3-1) – Starting to wonder after narrowly escaping a Claremont team that was defeated by Walnut a week earlier. Inconsistency? That was the Bearcats’ problem last year too.” is #5 and Glendora with their struggles to get to two wins in two overtimes is #3……completely laughable!!!!!! I know one thing Los Altos has earned the #3 spot just on the basis that the didn’t have to go to overtime to do it. Glendora is at best a #7 rank. And after this week and a hungry CO rips them I’m sure the Tartans will be deserving of the #1 spot according to this blogs logic.

    • GP AKA Green Machine

Let me get this Straight, Los Altos has beaten 3 midvalley teams and Chino, and you want them to be ranked ahead of Glendora???They won’t have a quality win Until they beat DR and that win will only be quality if DR beats Wesco…Heck LA might get jumped in their off week….

      • Bulldogs have bite

Just checked. LA’s average SOS at this time is 5.

        • GP AKA Green Machine

I think Wesco is better, but their 2-2 is more impressive than to me…Just saying. I Think Los Al it good, but they still haven’t stamp anything.

          • Bulldogs have bite

We scheduled a solid (not insane like La Mirada) non-league. I think we will be ready to face anybody in the Hacienda and not be intimidated. I’ll take 2-2 if that means we are battle tested and ready. Our average SOS was 24.3, which is closer to the level of the teams we will face in the Hacienda. After playing CH, we will not see another team that good in league. We lost that game but showed some toughness in fighting our way back and not getting completely humiliated like the year before. Looks like another wild year for the Hacienda league is all I can say.

          • GP AKA Green Machine

I agree, CHills is a load. I don’t think they are as talented as the past years, but their play calling is nasty. That makes a huge difference. West Co will be ready. I was watching the Highlights of the Shills game, and boy your lineman body slammed a kid. That was the best block I’ve seen all year. I hate to bring up spilled milk… but noodles was that piece Wesco is missing. No disrespect to #10 but Noodles is worth 1-2 scores every week, and would have made a huge difference in your losses. I have the Hacienda…
            1 Wesco
            2 Bonita
            3. Los Al
            4 Dranch/Dbar…

          • Bulldogs have bite

Noodles or no Noodles. We have a team in which everyone wants to be here and play here. No personal agendas and players dividing the locker room. Which I think makes this team far better than last years. I think #10 Henry Tarin is doing far better than anybody expected, he makes plays with his feet to make a pass first rather than just run with it. Go to hudl and watch the Colony highlights, there is a punt return where two different players get de-cleated! The first block takes out two defenders!

          • Not So Fast My Friend

Watched film of CH against Tesoro and balancing that game with their game against Bishop Amat, it is what I said it would be. They have more balance this season and when you have balance like they do, that makes them explosively dangerous.

Their film this year and comparing it to last year, they were very singularly focused. A lot of passes went to Jack Austin and a lot of their running went to a single RB. It’s clear in film study that Matt Simko had a love affair throwing the ball to Austin and their RB who played both ways got the lion’s share of the carries. This team this year has two complementary RBs and a solid core of WR’s. The QBs are not Simko, but that’s not a bad thing either. They play within their limits and No. 7 is a threat to run. On camera he looks like a big kid, who also plays LB for them. That tells you he has no problem dropping a shoulder on someone.

I agree on the play calling.

          • AMAT 73

            NSFMF,
Why is it they split time at the QB position . It seems to me that Martinez has much more to offer than the other kid .

          • Inland_FB_Fan

Martinez is their best LB too…..they tried to see if Sturdivant could handle QB so Martinez could play LB. I think the Amat game could have been different if Martinez played the whole game.

          • Not So Fast My Friend

            Agreed on the BA game.

          • AMAT 73

Maybe a little different , but it still would have been the same outcome .

          • Not So Fast My Friend

I will always defer to the coaching staff in this case, but I agree with Inland FB Fan. Martinez is their starting LB so I don’t think you want your starting QB doing double duty. In comparison Martinez looks like he has a more lively arm than Sturdivant, but Sturdivant looks like he reads the field better.

Considering they run the pistol, you want a QB that’s a threat to run. Martinez is that threat. Sturdivant seems more comfortable being in the pocket.

A two QB system has its pros and cons. I’m not a fan of it, but it’s working for CH pretty good so far. Like you I think the offense runs better with Martinez and had he been playing QB the whole game, the outcome of the BA game could have been different. Hindsight is 20-20 and Sturdivant isn’t a bad option to run your offense either.

          • GP AKA Green Machine

Nice break down…I’ve always thought the Chills was the only legit Inland team in the Sierra. They have good numbers, good Athletes, and even better coaching now. most schools don’t have 2 Guys they can turn to at QB. That’s going to pay dividends as the season progress. If one guys down…you still have a legit option. However, I would start breaking in the QB only player little more. Tackling seems to be a lost fundamental. CHills, Amat, and the Majority of the top teams in the Area tackle well. Chills and Amat defenders always seem to be in the right position…

          • WCDan

After seeing Chino Hills this year and last year I think Chino Hills is every bit as or even more talented this year than they were last year. Trent Goens on the D line was only a soph last year,he was very good, he is even stronger this year. Their recievers as a group I think are even better this year than last. I know they had Jack Austin, but these guys they have now are faster and more athletic and caught everything thrown their way.
The qb was pinpoint accurate all night. We moved the ball better on them this year but that is because we are a lot better on offense this year.

    • SGV FB Dad

SMH, this is the highest ranking you will have this season. Los Altos will be the #3 team in the Hacienda.

  • If’s and but’s

If CO is the 2nd best Sierra Team and CH is ranked @ #2 then how can SH be ranked ahead of CO? If you think CO is better then SH then you need to rank them ahead of SH regardless of records. Records mean very little in non league play when everyone is playing different teams that are all of various degrees of strength. Stand by you belief of “who would beat who” and rank teams accordingly, otherwise your rankings have no meaning.

    • FredJ

No I don’t, I think Charter Oak could beat Los Altos too, but LA deserves is ranking. If we ranked teams purely on who we thought could beat who regardless of record, these rankings would be different.

      • GP AKA Green Machine

There is no such thing as a for sure win, so you can rank subjectively…who would have though Walnut would beat Claremont. If they don’t play, you can justify your view on the rankings. CO would be favorites to Beat Los Al…but they can lose

      • AMAT 73

        FredJ
If LA at 4-0 deserves its ranking #4 then why have 4-0 BP at #14 and 4-0 Pomona at #16 ????? What did LA do and BP and Pomona didn’t to deserve their rankings ?????? Why such a wide spread between 3 , 4-0 teams , I mean really you have Damien 2-1 at 10 and they’ve only beaten a couple of tomato cans and that’s being generous to the slime .

    • FredJ

That’s how rankings work, Aram has Charter Oak ranked behind Whittier Christian in his all encompassing

  • Panther Monsters

How in the world is Diamond Ranch not in the top 5 let alone the top 10? Los Altos at number 4 is a complete joke. We can’t wait to play them in 2 weeks and I guarantee that we beat them by at least 3 touch downs. And as far as West Covina is concerned it looks like they’ll be walking away with their 3rd loss in a row this coming Friday. So Fred please explain how it is that we are not ranked ahead of an overrated Los Altos & Bonita with the same records as us and a West Covina team that has 2 losses? I guess we’re just going to have to bury these 3 teams on the field before we get any respect over here.

    • TruTH

Each year Diamond Ranch fans come to these blogs and say how they will beat every team in league. 2 years ago on your homecoming game Los Altos beat DR and last year you beat LA by one touchdown, I highly doubt you will be burying any of the teams you mentioned. Diamond Ranch fans should focus on West Covina because though they are 2-2, they had a much tougher schedule than DR.

      • GP AKA Green Machine

Some may believe that DR is overrated….I guess the Trib writers think this…

        • Bulldogs have bite

DR’s SOS is 7.9. The only team they played that had at least a double digit rating was Ayala (26.3). They lost that game 19-16.

          • TruTH

Diamond Ranch is a good team that has probably the best line in league. They have a tough defense that gets after the ball but to state that they will bury teams in the Hacienda is ridiculous. West Covina will give them a great game and I believe West Covina wins it in a low scoring close game.

          • Not So Fast My Friend

            Good point.

    • Inland_FB_Fan

Who have you played??? You lost to 2-2 Ayala, beat 0-4 Chino, beat 0-4 Schurr , beat 2-2 El Rancho. The combined record of your opponents is 4 – 12 ……Enough said

    • MoreKetchup

Rankings aren’t made using baseless speculation and laughable fan boy ignorance.

The one that questioned how your rankings go against your picks.
You remember… #7 Charter Oak over #3 Glendora. I’m so confused. Why not rank Charter Oak #3 where you believe they should be and Glendora #7 where you think they belong? It’s your rankings. You set the rules.

What’s the take on Diamond Bar at Bonita this Friday?

  • chivo

I just heard from a Amat dad who said that one of the super sohpmores may have transfered out and that his fther and Hagearty had to be seperated forcefully. Whats going with Hagearty Amat fans, is his arrogance finally getting to people?

    • Inland_FB_Fan

Why blaming Hagerty? Sounds like a football daddy wasn’t happy because little Johnny wasn’t playing and confronted the coach. I doubt that Haggerty sought out the parent. I can’t believe parents these days…thinking they have power in a football program. When I played, my dad wouldn’t even have thought about approaching the coach. He had too much respect for him and let him do his job.

      • GP AKA Green Machine

This could be a rumor… But if it’s true…some one is going to hit the lotto…transfers from Amat don’t need much polishing.

      • Out of hand

It was bad enough when parents of Jr’s. and Sr’s were acting like entitled a-holes and now we have to deal with parents of Sophomores who think they have a right to try and tell the coach how to run his program? Isn’t this the same dad that pulled his older kid from SH and transferred him to CO a few years back? Here’s a piece of advice to you parents of Freshmen and Sophomores. Just because your kids did well on the Freshmen team last year doesn’t mean that your kids are all that and better then Jr’s and Sr’s that are more mature and better players then your little Sophomore Johnny. This is big boy football at the Varsity level not beginner football at the Freshmen level and your little Johnny may not be ready now or even next year for the jump in competition.

        • GP AKA Green Machine

Some sophomores are better than some juniors and seniors. A parent does have the right to his/her opinion. We have had this discussion all summer. However, Transferring is risky business. Parents and coaches should not be mixing it up. There are 80 other kids in the program, and that sort behavior should not transpire over one kid. I don’t care if he is a 5 star recruit or reserve.

          • Out of hand

Say you and ignorant parents like you, but the professionals that are paid to coach the team and are at practice everyday and all summer long say and think different. If you and these parents were such a great judge of talent then I think you would be the one with the 6 figure contract coaching the team.

          • GP AKA Green Machine

So you are saying that a parent can’t have a different opinion regarding their kids talent. That’s Crazy. Right or wrong parents can think what they want. Whether it’s the correct assessment is something totally different. The head coach will be the judge of who the starters will be. I am just saying that they shouldn’t be mixing it up.

    • haditwiththisfool

Team is intact. No one transferred. Stop spreading rumors girls.

  • Los Altos 2011 team

Diamond Ranch is always overrated. I remember going to there ghetto field 2 years ago in Pomona, and beating them to spoil their homecoming game. They had all this hype on how they were going to beat everyone and didn’t even even beat us haha garbage program #losaltos #ftv

  • chivo

Fellow posters I was just sharing what I was told by this Amat dad who saw the whole thing. I also stated he may have transfered out, not for sure. Fathers have a right to voice their opinons, but there is a time and a place for everything and just before the game Friday night is not the place. Now I will say this I`ve met Steve Hagearty and he carries himself with an arrogance that can be annoying, and I will say this he is a good coach, not great because he hasn`t done anything at Amat yet.

    • AMAT 73

      chivo,
Who is the arrogant one . The parent harping on Hags for playing time for his son or Hags for following his coaches choice on who should play the position ????? Also there are post that say it was Alvarez’s father who was doing the yelling not Tyler’s .

      • Lancerito

73, thats unfortunate if it was Alvarez’s father. Alvarez seems like such a nice kid. He is a solid receiver, but there are a lot of other talented players at the receiver spot this year too.

This is going to be a challenging season for the coaches and players from the standpoint that there is a lot of talent and not enough time in a game to play everyone. The coaches are doing a great job trying to manage it all, but unfortunately they will never be able to please everyone.

This is what makes AMAT AMAT….the best players play. In a situation like we have this year, that means that there are some “good” players that are behind “better” players. It’s a tough position to be in but when you come to AMAT you have to know that is a possibility.

        • AMAT 73

          Lancerito,
Don’t even know who it was or if it happened as on another thread is has Vasquez’s dad as the person . I guess people will take shots or try and stir up the pot when things are going in the right direction . Either way the team is solid , the coaches run the team and the best players play . The funny thing is that we are not even into our season and people are already complaining about playing time . They should be letting their kids know , when they get called to enter the game play good enough so they don’t want to take him out , that’s how you crack a line up not by a parent getting all over the coaches .

    • Lancer_Land

      Chiva,
If you think Hagerty is arrogant, you obviously don’t know him. He’s a great coach and is always respectful toward parents and players. He’s confident and knows how to run a program, but arrogant he is not. What is arrogant is ANY parent trying to tell the Head Football coach that their son deserves more playing time when they don’t go to practices, watch film, etc., etc. Just because little Johnny was the Shiat in Pop Warner doesn’t mean he is a starter in the PAC5. Some of these parents need to take off the Mommy and Daddy Glasses and look at the reality of the situation.

      • chivo

        Lancer land ,
Maybe if you get oout of Hagerty`s crack you can see that arrogance is what pisses people off, not confidence. Ya I agree h runs a good ship of a program, and parents should know their place when it comes to a football program, but I personally know people who`s sons played at Amat for Hagerty in the past and these parent`s felt the same way. Now these parents did not get in the way one time of Hagerty coaching their kids wheather they were starters or bench warmers. Now personally I`ve met Hagerty at a football function away from Amat and he shook a friend of mine hand and he had his Championship rings on from other schools he coached at. Hagerty turned his hand so my friend could see the rings on his fingers. Who does that? A arrogant self absorbed coach. Now you will probalby say he should bask in his past glory and enjoy what he has accomplished, but not like that. I truly hope Amat does well this year and I`m rooting for my friends son who plays O-Line, and has worked hard to earn his spot. Crack kills..

        • AMAT 73

          Chivo,
You ever watch pro football on tv . All the ex football announcers who have won Super bowls hold the microphone with the hand that has their SB

          • chivo

            Amat 73,
No beef with Hagerty here, but I see Hagerty has his people who protect him, Lancerland, Amat 73. It`s cool , stand up for him and let`s see if can take you to the promise land sooner than later. If he does, you can come on here say I told you he was a great guy. And if he doesn`t than you can come on here let me know what went wrong. Time will tell, but he`s been there what 5 years now, how many more until the Lancer fans give up on his well run program.

          • Lancer_Land

            Ay Chiva,
1st we are talking about his character and then you want to come back and talk about not winning a Pac5 title. Don’t get sad that he showed off his rings. That’s a great accomplishment and something he should be very proud of. Why don’t you and your buddy go work hard and earn something so you can show it off. WOW, you meet him 1 time and are going to come on here calling him arrogant. Stop already.

Regarding the wins, only 1 Pac5 Coach wins it every year. Hopefully Hags will bring one home soon, but if he doesn’t no big deal. He gets plenty of wins and teaches kids discipline, confidence, and life lessons. He also gets a lot of kids out to college and AMAT players are very well respected. That’s the stuff that matters in the end. Of course we would all like a Pac5 ring, but that is not what makes him a great coach or great person.

Next time you go to a football function, just SQEEEEL when you come in the door and I’ll tell Hags that is the signal to hide the rings! LMFAO!

        • Lancer_Land

          Chiva,
And BTW, I’m on here defending him because you have NO CLUE what you are taking about. I’ve had a lot of interaction with Hagerty over many years and I have NEVER seen him arrogant with ANYONE.

It would be like you saying Monrovia’s uniforms are pink or something ridiculous like that. I would come on here and ask you for some of that stuff you’re smoking in that situation too! Hook me up Bro! LMFAO

    • haditwiththisfool

You should read the Amat kids twitter posts…they’re saying it sucks parents are making crap up and mentioning kids by name. They’re vowing not to let this BS interfere in the brotherhood that is AMAT football.

    • haditwiththisfool

Lancer land is right. Hagerty is a class act.
