Monrovia’s Kurt Scoby, you can’t stop him, you can only hope to contain him ..

“With a back like Scoby, you’re not realistically thinking you’re going to shut him down. What you want to do is contain him and keep him bottled up. You don’t want him to have a 300-yard night on you. I could live with giving him 90-100 yards, but we just can’t give him that huge night.”South Hills coach Albert Rodriguez on Friday’s showdown, South Hills at Monrovia.

GIRLS VOLLEYBALL: St. Lucy’s Sydney Bast talks about Tuesday’s loss at La Salle, “We’ll be alright, we’ll see them again.”

Watch St. Lucy’s Sydney Bast talk about St. Lucy’s stinging 25-19, 25-17, 29-27 sweeping loss to rival La Salle. These two will probably meet again and like usual, St. Lucy’s will probably pay them back in the playoffs. They always do.

STORY: The Lancers scored a 25-18, 25-17, 29-27 victory in a full La Salle gymnasium that had a playoff-like atmosphere. The Lancers are the top-ranked team in the CIF-Southern Section Division 1-A poll and the Regents are the No. 2-ranked team. “We knew this had to be done in three,” Knop said. “We really fought for that third game.”

Boys Water Polo: Harvard-Westlake routs Damien, 16-3

By Steve Ramirez

CLAREMONT —
When it comes to boys water polo, Damien High School and Harvard-Westlake are two of the better programs in Southern California.
Both are ranked in their respective divisions, and usually have a say during the CIF-Southern Section playoffs in November.
The visiting Wolverines look to be a little ahead of the game Tuesday.
Ben Hallock and Johnny Hooper scored four goals each and Harvard-Westlake shutout Damien in the second half en route to a 16-3 victory in a nonleague game at Claremont McKenna College.
The Wolverines, also getting two goals each from Warren Snyder, Duncan Froomer and Morio Saito, improved to 6-1. Harvard-Westlake is ranked No. 2 in Division 1.
Harvard-Westlake outshot Damien, 11-4 in the second half, allowing just two shots on goal.
Harvard-Westlake coach Brian Flacks: “We have a lot of respect for Damien and (head coach Grant Miller). He’s done a lot with the program, taking them to the Division 2 semifinals last year. They’re always a competitor, so coming out here on the road and getting a ‘W’ is always a big thing. We take a lot of pride to train and compete to put us in position to win these types of games. It’s a good win for us.”
Damien coach Grant Miller: “They are a very good team,” Miller said. “Its why they are one of the best in the country. Our biggest problem is we weren’t willing to play hard enough. We came in scared, and that’s exactly what happened. You play scared, and we got annihilated out there.”

Hacienda, Valle Vista and Montview League football predictions

With three competitive area football league’s beginning this week, here is my prediction of how it will all shake out.

9-13-13 NORTHVIEW05

VALLE VISTA LEAGUE
Reason I’m either going to feel like a genius or have no shot at this, but I like Northview to beat San Dimas on Friday and run the table in the VVL. Just feel like this is the Vikings’ time. I like the Saints to finish second with unbeatens Baldwin Park and Pomona third and fourth respectively.
Prediction: 1. Northview (4-0), 2. San Dimas (0-4), 3. Baldwin Park (4-0), 4. Pomona (4-0), 5. Covina (2-2), 6. Wilson (1-3), 7. Nogales (1-3).

broadusHACIENDA LEAGUE
Reason I know Diamond Bar isn’t the popular choice, but I love how they dismantled San Dimas and routed Brea Olinda. Their only loss was to 4-0 Norwalk, no big deal. Every game is tough in the Hacienda, but I like the Brahmas to win out when all said and done. Los Altos and Diamond Ranch will likely battle for second and third with Bonita edging West Covina for fourth place. Wow, can’t believe I predicted the Bulldogs to finish fifth.
Prediction: 1. Diamond Bar (3-1), 2. Los Altos (4-0), 3. Diamond Ranch (3-1), 4. Bonita (3-1), 5. West Covina (2-2), 6. Rowland (2-2), 7. Walnut (1-3).

azusacelebrationMONTVIEW LEAGUE
Reason I like what Azusa’s done in competitive losses, especially against Arcadia. Also, none of their opponents have losing records. La Puente and Duarte should battle for the league title too, but I’m going with the experienced coaching staff at Azusa to pull it out. However, I won’t be surprised if Duarte or La Puente, the only two teams with a chance at a league title, give Azusa all it can handle.
Prediction: 1. Azusa (1-2), 2. La Puente (2-1), 3. Duarte (1-2), 4. Sierra Vista (1-2), 5. Workman (2-1), 6. Gladstone (1-2), 7. Ganesha (1-2), 8. Bassett (0-3).

St. Lucy’s volleyball player Veronica LaPierre battled her way back from brain surgery

lapierre St. Lucy’s volleyball coach Sean Douglas found his star player Veronica LaPierre to be a bit stubborn from his first dealings with her. It was one of her first varsity matches during her sophomore year and Douglas was encouraging her to go for a cross-court shot after she had been blocked trying to go down the line.
He called a timeout and asked her whether she heard him screaming from the sideline or if she was being stubborn. LaPierre admitted it was the latter.
“That’s her personality. She was not going to let that girl beat her,” Douglas recalled.
