TRIBUNE SUPER 35 RANKINGS
1. Bishop Amat (3-1)
— The Lancers have been far from perfect, but they’re getting wins and beating Charter Oak again was important for its rep in the area. They should breathe a little easier with a gimmie at St. Paul next.
2. Chino Hills (3-1) – Has without a doubt become the Sierra League favorite and not sure if anyone will touch them in league after how it dismantled West Covina and beat Tesoro. Hey, they’re that good.
3. Glendora (3-0) — Wins over Bonita, Ayala with Charter Oak up next. You have to give it up to the Tartans. They might not be Baseline league ready, but they’re still a darn-good Sierra-type team.
4. Los Altos (4-0) — Is it the areas fourth-best team? I’m not so sure, but they’ve earned this spot and will have several chances to prove it in the Hacienda.
5. Bonita (3-1) – Starting to wonder after narrowly escaping a Claremont team that was defeated by Walnut a week earlier. Inconsistency? That was the Bearcats’ problem last year too.
6. South Hills (2-1) – Huskies had a week to rest to get ready for Monrovia and has to feel better about its chances after San Dimas gave the ‘Cats all it could handle last week.
7. Charter Oak (0-3) — Don’t care what the record is, they’re still the second-best in the Sierra behind Chino Hills. I’m not ready to sell, they still do so many things well.
8. Northview (4-0) — This is the week they get to earn their ranking, taking on defending Valle Vista league champ San Dimas in the league opener.
9. West Covina (2-2) – After a promising 2-0 start, the Bulldogs have lost two straight, though losing to South Hills and Chino Hills is nothing for fans to worry about. If they beat Diamond Ranch this week, they’re back on track.
10. Damien (2-1) — Are the Spartans Sierra League contenders? Maybe not a league title, but the past two weeks show they could be one of the top three. If they win at St. Francis Friday, then they really shoot up the rankings.
The Rest: 11. Diamond Ranch (3-1); 12. Ayala (2-2); 13. Diamond Bar (3-1); 14. Baldwin Park (4-0); 15. Arroyo (3-1); 16. Pomona (4-0); ); 17. San Dimas (0-4); 18. La Puente (2-1); 19. Tribskin Pick’em: Hacienda, Valle Vista and Montview League ready for battle plus Glendora at Charter Oak, South Hills at Monrovia

Aram Tolegian and I will go head-to-head picking football games throughout the season. He edged me out the past two seasons, but it’s not happening this year, not when we’re playing for a Slater’s 50-50 burger.

Aram Tolegian (19-2, last week); (57-29, season total)
Fred Robledo (18-3, last week); (58-28, season total)

pickem

Last week: Aram and I followed one of our worst weeks in Trib’skin history with one of our best, Aram finishing 19-2 while I went 18-3 to keep a one-game lead on the season.

This week: The Hacienda, Valle Vista and Montview leagues get going this week, and nothing better than winless and dangerous San Dimas going against the areas biggest surprise, undefeated Northview at the District. We’ll know if Northview’s the real deal or if San Dimas is where it is because of a tough schedule. I’m buying the Vikes, they’ve been too good to take a step back. Great openers in the Hacienda with Diamond Bar at Bonita and Diamond Ranch at West Covina. I don’t feel strong about either, but I’m going with Diamond Bar and Diamond Ranch. In the Montview, Duarte and Azusa could tell us a lot. I think the winner will compete with La Puente for the league title. Take Azusa. In others, I like Charter Oak to get its first win vs. Glendora, Monrovia to beat South Hills and for Bishop Amat to beat St. Paul by at least four touchdowns.

Friday’s results
Bishop Amat 45, Charter Oak 21 Tre Sidney with three interceptions as Amat turns a seven-point halftime lead into a rout.
Chino Hills 52, West Covina 33 The Bulldogs simply couldn’t keep up with arguably the areas highest powered offense.
Arcadia 8, Azusa 7 Aztecs defense played great, too bad their offense didn’t reward them.
Damien 34, St. Paul 18 Don’t look now, but Mark Paredes’ group is gaining momentum with second straight W.
Monrovia 26, San Dimas 13 Was tied 13-13 in the fourth quarter when Kurt Scoby rescued the Wildcats and scored twice.
Glendora 20, Ayala 17, OT – The Tartans remain undefeated with another big non-league win. Too bad the Tartans aren’t in the Sierra, it would be fun.
Covina 42, Walnut 14 — Colts have rebounded nicely from 0-2 start to win two straight.
Diamond Ranch 28, Schurr 0 — Panthers bounce back after last week’s loss to post a shutout.
Los Altos 34, Chino 20 — It was nervous time for a while before the Conqs took control.
Arroyo 40, Rowland 14 — For those keeping score, that’s three straight wins for the Knights, looking like MVL favorites.
Diamond Bar 47, Brea Olinda 0 — This is the Diamond Bar everyone expected from week 1
San Marino 70, Nogales 0 — I hope there was a running clock, no fun getting 70 thrown on you.
Pomona 26, Sultana 13 — The Red Devils remain undefeated, just like Northview and Baldwin Park, the three new VVL favorites, right?
Northview 49, South El Monte 14 — The Vikings haven’t been tested yet, an easy road to 4-0.
Bonita 35, Claremont 28 — The Bearcats trailed 14-0 and rallied late to pull it out.
Sierra Vista 47, Keppel 0 — About what you expected from the Dons.
Rosemead 21, Warren 14 — Finally, after tonight we get to watch the Panthers play some area teams.
La Puente 20, Wilson 7 — My early Montview favorites won again
Pioneer 45, Mountain View 42 — The Vikings had a real shot at winning this, but great effort regardless.

CIF-SS commissioner Rob Wigod talks about transfers

In the second part of the four-part series with CIF-SS commissioner Rob Wigod, the Long Beach Press telegram asks Wigod about transfers. “There’s a thought that the new rules would change the numbers of transfers, and that was never the issue,” says Wigod. “There’s going to be a lot of transfers every year — I call it the flood. The question is, do you manage it, or try to calm it down? For us to stop the numbers the rules would have to be made to be so much more restrictive. Politically, that’s not a direction we’re going to go in. So instead, you have to find a way to manage it and make it work.”

On the athletically motivated rule and how it’s interpreted ..
“We’re in an interesting spot,” says Wigod. “Our section voted clearly to get rid of that language — unfortunately, there wasn’t the support state-wide. Is every transfer athletically motivated? Well we get paperwork on every single student, so it obviously has something to do with athletics. We’re not naïve to believe that athletics aren’t a part of it. That’s why, by definition, it’s a case-by-case thing.”

When Wigod was introduced as CIF-SS commissioner in 2011, he was asked if he had a definition of what is an athletically motivation transfer. His short answer, “I do not.”
