Tribskin Pick’em: Bishop Amat should finally beat Alemany; Bonita gets edge over West Covina

Aram Tolegian and I will go head-to-head picking football games throughout the season. He edged me out the past two seasons, but it’s not happening this year, not when we’re playing for a Slater’s 50-50 burger.

Aram Tolegian (14-3, last week); (112-48, season total)
Fred Robledo (13-5, last week); (114-46, season total)

hagsLast Week: Aram picked up two games to pull within two. Aram missed taking Chino Hills over Charter Oak, Ayala over Damien and La Puente over Duarte. I also missed taking La Puente along with taking Covina over Baldwin Park, Diamond Ranch over Diamond Bar, Mountain View over Gabrielino and Workman over Ganesha.

This week’s games and predictions With Crespi beating Loyola and Alemany knocking off Notre Dame the Serra is a crapshoot, with only Crespi, having played just one game, the only team without a loss. Even though Amat lost its opener to Notre Dame, it still controls its own destiny by winning, and they have to win Friday at home against Alemany or they could all but forget their playoff chances. Amat has never beaten Alemany since Alemany joined the Serra, and Amat’s coming off a bye week, so there are no excuses. Take Amat, they have to have it and they will get it. West Covina at Bonita is another close one, but I’m taking surging Bonita, who appears to be getting its second wind. Can Glendora bounce back after its first defeat and beat Etiwanda? They should.

South Hills – Given Charter Oak’s resurgence, I’m hard pressed to imagine South Hills getting past them. If CO plays within themselves, they’ll walk right by SH. CO by two TDs or more.

Glendora – the glass slipper is broken. This is probably the most interesting game on the calendar. Etiwanda has found their groove and Glendora stumbled last friday in a big way against Rancho Cucamonga. I doubt Glendora regains their feet. I’d lean toward Glendora anyway, but I’m not sure the shock and horror of Rancho will have worn off by Friday. Etiwanda by three in a close one.

DRanch – given the fight with DBar you have to wonder how much of a team they’ll be able to field. I’m sure CIF wants to wrap up their investigation quickly and pass out the punishments this week. Don’t know if they’ll have everything they need for that to happen. No suspensions, DRanch.

West Covina – I haven’t seen film on Bonita, but I did on WestCo. This game depends on which WestCo team shows up. Not knowing then we’ll go with Bonita by a TD.

Bishop Amat – Most people that have read my posts know I’m not a hater of Bishop Amat, but I don’t see them getting past Alemany. BA has problems protecting Koa and that’s just the tip of the iceberg. Overall, I think Alemany is a faster team than BA and that will be the difference. Alemany by two TDs.

Chino Hills – Over the weekend, I was thinking the loss against CO may turn out to be a good thing for CH. They’ll get their minds right and rededicate themselves to moving the ball with smart play calling and executing their offense. Had either been in sync Friday, they would have won. Neither were, so they lost. What better way to get it in gear than against your in-city rival. Ayala will bear the brunt of a furious Chino Hills team. No score prediction for this one because a win is a win and both need it.

And since I know Fred is a UCLA guy, I’m calling Oregon (obviously) over UCLA this weekend by several touchdowns!

    • GP AKA Green Machine

BA has one thing going, they are good at Keifer… Also, the QB for Alemany is not accurate which helps out BA because of the DB’s they have, but Alemany’s QB is dangerous running the ball, which means 3rd down stops are going to be very important

      • Not So Fast My Friend

That’s one of the reasons I picked Alemany. They are more athletic and an overall faster team. I think the fact he’s a runner and a very good one, makes them that much more dangerous.
Lastly this is no slight to BA’s DBs, but Alemany’s WRs are lethal. I’m not sure BA’s DBs can contain that.

        • GP AKA Green Machine

Yeah, but that is BA’s best group. The key to winning is for BA to shut down the Passing game and make him a runner. How do you put pressure on the qb, while keeping him in the pocket and forcing him to make perfect passes. They could live with a few big runs from the QB. They just can’t let those WR go crazy getting wide open, which makes it easy for a not so prolific passer to complete passes. That Alemany would be impossible to beat.

          • Not So Fast My Friend

That’s my point. BA’s DBs are good, but Alemany’s WRs are better (in my opinion). If Alemany gets the ball to them in space then that will be a big problem for BA. Then containing him is the other. That’s what’s on the defensive side of the ball.

On the offensive side, and I’m not clear if it’s still an issue or not, but BA’s protection of Koa is spotty and has been since the CH game. Koa can move back there, but if he’s going to get pressured, like I’m thinking Alemany will do, that will cause problems with them moving the ball vertically. BA’s run game should be fine, but if or when Alemany shuts down the run, now that’s a pickle for you!

My uneducated guess is BA should play ball control, pushing the run offense and thereby minimize Alemany’s possessions. If this game comes down to a shootout, I think Alemany wins more convincingly.

Glendora vs Etiwanda may be the most interesting, but BA vs Alemany is the game to watch.

          • AMAT 73

            NSFMF,
Key to the game will be line play . If the LANCERS can put pressure and outside containment on the QB that will be a huge plus as it will make the DB’s job a bit easier but still a tough job . Also as you say the O-line has to give Koa the time to set or the edge to run also . His running will be the key to the open up the run for the RBs .
Key game for both teams as the loser will have 2 loses in league . Won’t be quite out of it but on the brink .

          • Not So Fast My Friend

Hey Amat, I totally agree. BA will have to contain Alemany’s QB cause of the run threat. BA’s DBs cannot get caught napping on Alemany’s WRs. They do, it’s going to be a very long night.

The key to the game, as always is the play of the big boys upfront. Be physical and move people and they’ll be successful, don’t and they won’t.

    • MonkeyWrench

Etiwanda has really found da grove with a 1 game wiining steak over Alta Loma. Your all over dis jaun.

      • Not So Fast My Friend

I am. Etiwanda beat Alta Loma and a win is a win. Glendora may be facing a let down because they lost against Rancho Cucamonga; a game they wanted to win. So I’m going to go with the team coming off the win, as opposed to the team coming off a loss. And since it’s not a rivalry game, I expect to be proven wrong, but don’t think so.

        How’s that? Lol

        • MonkeyWrench

Etiwanda has played teams with a combined 4-21 record. You just be picking against cause your a hatter. Man up and call it what it is.

          • Not So Fast My Friend

How can I be a hater of Glendora?? LOL I’ve said for as long as I’ve been posting here that they’ve got talent and just didn’t have any stability in coaching. They do now and it’s paid off. However, I don’t know if they’ll be over losing to RC.

At least I said if Etiwanda were to win, it would only be by three.

Just for the record, I’m not a hater of any program nor am I a blind supporter of any either. I find it funny that a person goes against the status quo or has a different opinion, they’re a hater. A hater is far more profound about expressing their hatred. Perhaps you should redirect that to some other posters on here.

every year you picked your beloved Lancers to beat my warriors and every year you were wrong and that shall continue.

    • Jefe

Fred & Aram rarely pick against Amat.

They know what riles you guys up.

      • warrior fan

i believe they do it every year so if Amat does upset the football world theyll be able to say they knew it and brag about how they knew it.
