CIF ruling official: Diamond Bar will forfeit next game; Diamond Ranch with 19 players suspended

STORY: The punishments have been handed down and it’s not pretty for the Diamond Bar and Diamond Ranch high school football teams.
Diamond Bar saw nearly all of its varsity roster given one-game suspensions on Wednesday when the CIF-Southern Section office announced the results of its investigation into this past Friday’s brawl between the two rival schools.
Diamond Ranch wasn’t much better, with a total of 19 players suspended for Friday’s game against Rowland.

Diamond Ranch coach Roddy Layton hasn’t commented in the days following the fight, but we did speak with him immediately following the game and this is what he had to say…

TMZ VIDEO, STORY: TMZ is also all over the story with exclusive video. TMZ is interested obviously because Diamond Bar WR Cordell Broadus, the son of rapper Snoop Dogg, was allegedly involved in the brawl.

FULL CIF-SS PRESS RELEASE

Note: Players ejected are subject to one-game suspensions.

Question has to be asked: It appears that Diamond Bar will not be allowed to call up JV players to field a varsity roster, thus forcing it to forfeit its next game. Question is, why? When Cathedral and St. Paul baseball had a bench-clearing brawl last April, several were suspended. St. Paul forfeited its next game because of a depleted lineup. However, Cathedral did use JV players to field a team for its next game, though it was a tournament game. I have no problem with CIF forcing a forfeit, but I always thought you could call up JV players if needed. In any case, there is nothing Diamond Bar can do about it. They signed an agreement that stipulates whatever CIF decides is final.

CIF-PRESS RELEASE SAYS: After an investigation of the events surrounding the early termination of the Hacienda League football contest between Diamond Ranch and Diamond Bar High Schools the section, in cooperation with the schools involved, has made the following determination:

1. Diamond Ranch High School had three (3) players ejected from the contest on-site by the officiating crew due to fighting and/or assaultive behavior.

2. Diamond Ranch High School, following review of game footage, has had an additional five (5) players ejected from the contest due to fighting and/or assaultive behavior.

3. Diamond Ranch High School, following review of game footage, has had an additional 11 players ejected from the contest due to leaving the confines of the bench or team area.

4. Diamond Ranch High School, following review of game footage, had 10 players on the field prior to the onset of the altercation that did not participate in the altercation and were not observed displaying aggressive and/or assaultive behavior and are NOT ejected and considered eligible for their next contest.

5. Diamond Bar High School had four (4) players ejected from the contest on-site by the officiating crew due to fighting and/or assaultive behavior.

6. Diamond Bar High School, following review of game footage, has had an additional five (5) players ejected from the contest due to fighting and/or assaultive behavior.

7. Diamond Bar High School, following review of game footage, had all but one player who was on the sideline at the time of the altercation leave the confines of the bench or
team area. Those players are also considered ejected.

8. Diamond Bar High School, following review of game footage, had six (6) players on the field prior to the onset of the altercation that did not participate in the altercation and were not observed displaying aggressive and/or assaultive behavior and are NOT ejected and considered eligible for their next contest.

9. Diamond Bar High School, due to a lack of varsity players available to compete in their
next contest will forfeit that contest. The CIF Southern Section now considers this matter closed and will have no further comment on any aspect of this unfortunate situation.

Well all they can do is live and learn from it.

  • Colt81

The CIF has made it clear a steep price will be exacted for this kind of thing. Let’s hope the rest of the teams, particularly those with playoff berths on the line, pay attention.

    • PatrickHT

      Perfectly stated!

    • Saints Parent

I know of at least one school who spent a good amount of practice time showing one of the other fights and discussing the issue. So they have been duly informed.

  • Prep Fan

Most teams have most (if not all) of their JV players suit up as backups for varsity games. Considering Diamond Bar’s entire bench (but one) is unavailable, they may not have a JV team to call up. Putting the frosh on the field would be a travesty, thus the need to forfeit.

    • PatrickHT

Question is now , that being its a forfeit , does the suspended players now have to serve them out against the following game?

      • FredJ

No, the forfeit is a result of players suspended for that game.

        • SGV 4 30 Years

Don’t forget, the school and/or the district may be handing out some additional consequences. So don’t necessarily count on cif’s punishment to be the last word.
And to answer the question about putting a JV team out there. Why would you want to throw those kids to the wolves.

          • PatrickHT

i say ,.play them if they wanna play…most of them are intelligent enough to know its a different world when you move up, but if they have the passion to want get out there..i say let them

  • GP AKA Green Machine

Dbar can kiss the playoffs good bye. Dranch can kiss their playoff seeding good bye…and maybe a league title. With 2 games left, they will need to beat Walnut after missing a week of practice, then Beat Bonita. They better hope Bonita is not 4-1 heading into that game…. they will be playing for a share of the title or could lose it outright with 2 losses.

    • xiledsoviet

      You mean they can’t practice?

      • GP AKA Green Machine

Well I am guessing that the school would lay suspensions down for fighting at a school sponsored event.

    • PatrickHT

Not accurate, Bonita would have to win there last 3!! just to tie DB in standings and then DB wins the tiebreaker since they have already beaten Bonita and WC, a loss changes nothing for DR

      • Not so

That’s not accurate Patrick. Bonita has only played 3 league games up to now (had their bye last week) and has beaten Rowland & Walnut (the 2 worst teams in league) and lost to DB. If Bonita were to win out they would be League Champs with a 5-1 record and victories over all the contenders except DB which can only obtain a 3-3 record at best. However, the 3 teams that Bonita has left are all better teams then Bonita so odds are the Bonita ends up 2-4 in league and out of the playoffs.

        • PatrickHT

YES my bad for leaving the best case scenario out..However im figuring at best BO will end up at 3-3

  • TruTH

With the forfeit loss for Diamond Bar their playoff hopes are now in jeopardy. however I still believe they will get in. When looking at Bonita’s remaining schedule they have West Covina, Diamond Ranch and Los Altos. West Covina has Bonita, and Los Altos remaining. Obviously Bonita has a tougher road to the playoffs and DB will depend on Los Altos to beat both West Covina and Bonita. But this weeks game between Bonita and West Covina will be very important for playoffs. My prediction will be
    1. Diamond Ranch (6-0)
    2. Los Altos (5-1)
    3. Diamond Bar(3-3) Beat both Bonita and West Covina
    4. Bonita (3-3) should get at large playoff seed

    • Valley Athletics

Lucky for DB they have walnut last game .

      • TruTH

Yes lucky for DB they have Walnut remaining. Sad to see a team that was playing good football before the playoffs throw it all away with one game. The question DB administration has to wonder if Coach Maine is the right person for this team. In his third year they have yet to make the playoffs and with the talent they have should not be the case

        • brad mill

As people post all the time on this blog…DBar has the skill positions but doesn’t have the horses. But this year they would have finished 7-3 and been seeded third and had a chance at second in league. So the playoff drought would have ended. You have to remember how dead the DBar program was before Maine took over. The thing Maine has to do is not to play get to hyped up and to not let coaches like Roddy (I’m still hurt over the way Diamond Bar people treated me when I was at Gary) get under his skin.

          • PatrickHT

Brad, there just a bunch of ill willed people who want to see the program fail! The real pissy thing about it is that they hide behind a computer screen.

        • PatrickHT

Truth, this could happen at any program , so your telling me that because of this blown up incident , that Maine should be fired, he has done more than any predecessor not including Roche….If you dont know him ,please dont try to bash his reputation, and if you feel that way , tell him in person or the administration instead of bad mouthing his reputation ..Thats NOT fair !

      • PatrickHT

I dont believe DB is looking past them , they have picked it up a bit

    • GP AKA Green Machine

So West Co does not have a shot?

      • TruTH

Well West Covina is currently (2-2) in league with Bonita and Los Altos remaining. They must beat Bonita this week to have any shot at playoffs. Right now Diamond Ranch is the only guarantee with 4 wins. After Diamond Ranch, Los Altos, Diamond Bar, Bonita, and West Covina have a chance. I still firmly believe the Hacienda will get 4 teams into the playoffs.

    • PatrickHT

Gotta remember, for BO thats assuming they win out..against LA, DR and BO…thats the rough patch of the schedule! One loss for them puts DB ahead 1 game, im not too sure about BO getting past LA and even less certain about DR….Tell me your thoughts with that scenario..

  • reality

So now we know that as far as the CIF is concerned the buck stops with the players. The coaches who are the real instigators of this behavior with their amped up aggressiveness that they showed prior to game time get nothing?? They wanted their pit bulls to fight and when they did they said tsk. tsk tsk. and thats that???BULL!!!!!!!

    • BRINDLE

PIT BULLS? you sound gay. this fool typed “tsk tsk”

      • AZTEC PRIDE

        That;s a no,no… LOL… calling people gay now a day’s! HAHAHAHAHAHAAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAAHAH.

        • BRINDLE

        • Joey C

          GAY

        • Not so

I think it’s ok to call people that if you follow it with “not that there’s anything wrong with that”

          • AZTEC PRIDE

I was joking! Come you didn’t see “LOL”…

          • Not so

I was throwing in a Seinfeld reference. I knew you were joking

      • reality

        Why? You interested sweetie pie?

        • BRINDLE

          I knew it

          • AZTEC PRIDE

            Hilarious !

    • AMAT 73

      reality,
You really thought they would punish the coaches. Look no further than the transfer situation whether athletically motivated or undue influence it all falls on the athlete . Let’s see what the schools do to the coaches as far as punishment .

    • INTEGRITY

AGREED! THE COACHES SHOULD ONLY BE CHALLENGING THEIR PLAYERS TO PLAY THEIR BEST GAME AND TO WIN FAIR AND SQUARE!! THEY SHOULD BE COMPETITIVE, NOT AGGRESSIVE TO THE POINT OF THIS CHAOS. COACHES HAVE SO MUCH POWER IN WHAT THEY SAY TO THEIR PLAYERS, TEACH THEIR PLAYERS AND WHAT THEY EXPECT FROM THEIR PLAYERS. PARENTS NEED TO BE INVOLVED TO THE DEGREE THAT IF THEY KNOW A COACH IS ENCOURAGING QUESTIONABLE BEHAVIOR OR EXPRESSING QUESTIONABLE BEHAVIOR, LET THE COACH KNOW THAT IT IS UNACCEPTABLE! PLAYERS SOLELY LOOK TO THE COACH FOR DIRECTION – PARENTS NEED TO MAKE SURE THEY KNOW WHAT DIRECTION THE PLAYERS ARE BEING DIRECTED TO!!

    • Not so

Actually due to the fact that DBar has to forfeit their next game the DBar coaches are being punished by being included in that forfeit.

      • AMAT 73

        Not so,
That’s quite a stretch to say the DB coaches are also punished by the forfeit. . What about the DR coaches. Both coaches lost control of their teams .

      • PatrickHT

But doesnt matter , it they are forfeiting, there is no game to coach

  • socalspeed

So why is Diamond Bar unable to pull up their JV team to at least have a chance against Rowland rather than forfeit

    • LA Futbol

      Read Prep Fan’s comments below.

I’m not going to absolve the coaches for both team in this matter. The coaches were more hyped up than the players before the game, almost got into a fight themselves and didn’t react quick enough to what was happening on the field. However, the officials played a huge part in this brawl as well. When DBar was assessed a unsportsmanlike conduct penalty after the kick off tension was really running high between the teams. The pressure of a close nail biting game was suddenly released after DBar turnovers led to two Dranch touchdowns, effectively wrapping up the game. At this point the chippiness and taunting began from the DRanch team and the DBar team reacted instead of walking away. The crucial error by the officials? They ALL gathered together on the ten yard line to discuss the DBar penalty for around five minutes. Not ONE official was watching the players on the field or the sidelines. The ball was on the DBar hashmark and the DRanch players started making gestures and taunting the DBar bench. I’m not thinking the DBar players were innocent in this, but if an official had either told DRanch to stay on their sidelines until they were done or just stood between the players I don’t think the feelings would have escalated to the point they did. Once that happened you knew it was going to happen…the fuse had been lit and it just took a shove by Preston on Peterson to set it off.

  • 12th man

Wow! Story is gaining national attention! Just seen the full story on the news Kcal channel 9, two o’clock news~

    • Conq ’76

Don’t know that KCAL broadcast’s nationally, but know what you mean…:)

  • INTEGRITY

    IF I WAS COACH
MAINE OR THE AD FOR DB, I WOULD PROTEST THE WIN CIF GAVE TO DR. DB HAD THE BALL WITH 3:15 MINUTES, GIVEN A
PENALTY THAT WOULD’VE MOVED THEM CLOSER TO THE GOAL LINE AND A CHANCE TO GET A
TOUCH-DOWN WITH PLENTY OF TIME ON THE CLOCK TO DO AN ON-SIDE KICK AND GO FROM
THERE. YET THE DR PLAYER GOT A PENALTY, PUSHES
THE DB QUARTERBACK AND REALLY ENTICES THE “BRAWL” WITH HIS POOR ACTIONS, YET DIAMOND
RANCH GETS THE WIN!! MAKES NO
SENSE!! BOTH TEAMS SHOULD HAVE HAD TO
FORFEIT THAT GAME. NEITHER TEAM SHOWED
THEY WERE WINNERS, THEY BOTH SHOULD POOR JUDGEMENT! IT IS TRULY NOT FAIR TO THE DB JV TEAM. DB’S JV TEAM COULD’VE PLAYED JUST AS THE DR
    JV TEAM IS GOING TO.

    • SGV_FOOTBALL

      Turn off all the caps!

      • AMAT 73

        SGV,
That’s one pissed off and wishful thinking DB fan !!!!

        • PatrickHT

          LOL…

    • Valley Athletics

Agree . The game should of been losses for both teams . In the cathedral vs St. Paul baseball game , the catcher and the batter got into an exchange and the benches cleared . It was the 5th inning and St. Paul was leading 5-1 . Both teams got forfeits of that game and players got suspended for next game which led to a forfeit . Same rules should apply for all sports .

    • SGV 4 30 Years

Here is a legit question. Since most of the JV teams suit out for Varsity games, will DB have to also forfeit the JV game vs Rowland? The bigger lesson for the players is that you have to be accountable for your actions. In the big picture of the season, DB is obviously the bigger loser. Their margin for error as far as the play-offs go has now gotten a whole lot smaller. I’m sure every other coach in the Valley is going over how their teams going to react should a similar situation arise in their games.
Now that this situation has closure as far as the players are concerned. Let’s get back to some football.

      • PatrickHT

not sure why, if you have enough players already on the JV then why would they have anything to do with the varsity? Your either suited up on the varsity or on the jv

    • Saints Parent

In my opinion, here is why any Protest would be not upheld. Now, what we have is the “official” after the fact CIF laydown of exactly who / what / why to answer questions about their actions. But IMO, the reason the game was called was because of Common Sense (oooh my god I hate using that cuz from what I have seen this year is some terrible ref’s, but I digress) by the Ref’s on the field. They are talking and saying OK, Diamond Bar Team “we have ejected those 3 players from game, ok what about everyone else who jumped into the fight?” then you can hear one of the other Ref’s “but hold on, their ENTIRE Bench was on the field, we have to eject all of them also”… ok, now to Ref on DR sideline “hey guy’s, only about 10 or 11 of their guy’s ran on the field, the rest stayed in place”…. Mr Head Ref “then really, DR has players left eligible to play, DB ain’t got no body left… hey, there is the PoPo, we outa here under cover” —-” Game OVER, see ya” It isn’t official, but seems they got it right. DB according to what happened would in essence have had NO PLAYERS LEFT — Oh excuse me, the 1 Kid who stayed on the bench (by the way, you think he is getting crap from his homies?) and then the 6 on the field who did not participate…. so a total of 7 Players eligible to go against 11 DR guy’s. Not sure, but I think that might have turned out bad anyway. So I am not sure the DB 6 would have pulled off a drive for a TD, then successfully executed an onsides kick and then score again?? No protest needed, no grounds. Remember, it sucks when someone else throws the first punch, but first rule of any sport (well except you MMA fans and Cage Fighters), let the other guy get ejected, keep your cool.

    • PatrickHT

At this point that would be like fighting a fire with gasoline…I say take the punishments and move on…Luckily for DB , even with the forfeit , they are still in running for playoff spot..Bonita still has LA and DR left and also WC, the best they could do as 3-3 and with a loss they could be 2-4 ,and that means DB has the tie breaker! and then again DB would have to get by Walnut!

  • DB Alum

sooo, the Brahmas have 3 weeks to prepare for Small Nuts High? okaaaayyyyy, supposing they make it through that game without ANY further ejections, they squeak into the first round after the tie breakers are won in their favor, AND DROP ALITTLE HIGH OCTANE, HIGH SPEED surprise for some overated league champ in the first round. This season is far from over you long toothed, big belly floating, bad breathed haters. No one will keep DB down!!!

    • Valley Athletics

They better hope they don’t draw La Serna or Norwalk .

      • Not so

Can’t draw Norwalk in the 1st round due to the fact that they played Norwalk already this year in the pre-league season.

      • PatrickHT

Well Valley, just making the playoffs were there 1st on list of goals…

    • reality

Makes no difference. Anything won by DB or DR this year will have a big fat stain on it. Got some news for you. DB already down and very quiet.

      • PatrickHT

Not so, life is going on for many of the kids…TRUST ME!

      • PatrickHT

But if you say that about DR and DB then surely you can backtrack and say that about the incidents that have happened in past with other programs

    • PatrickHT

DB ,lets keep things in perspective! There is alot they are going to go thru between now and the walnut and thats assuming there arent any further punishments handed down from the school. Walnut WONT be a push over, especially since they know what has taken place and its implications..I think they would be taking it one week at a time

  • Football

At Friday Night game taking notes… I was disappointed in what I saw on both ends. Both DR and DB Coaches were completely unprofessional. My sources tell me. Coaches I pointed out are not educators and are on the field in a verbal pre game match. DR asst. Coach and father of #1 standout player is mouthing off to #24 of DB before the game.

    • Nomoredrama

Fred reported that an asst. coach at DR has been dismissed. But he didnt report which coach….
