Tribune Super 35 Rankings: Call it Crazy, but .500 Charter Oak is No. 1

TRIBUNE SUPER 35 RANKINGS
domfarr1. Charter Oak (4-4) — I sat in the PrepXtra studio on Friday and thought seriously of making Charter Oak No. 1 despite its .500 record because it’s playing better than anyone at the moment, and beating solid teams, like Los Osos and Chino Hills. I know they lost to Bishop Amat, and they’re winning in the Sierra, not the Serra. But you have to reward hot, and the Chargers are just that. Hot.
2. Bishop Amat (5-3) – Let’s face it, Bishop Amat blew its chance last week to control its own destiny against Alemany and now it has to win at Crespi on Friday to keep its slight playoff hopes alive. Amat has never been that great away from home, so if it has any tricks up its sleeve, now’s the time.
3. Chino Hills (6-2) — The Huskies know by losing to Charter Oak they will not win the league title because Charter Oak isn’t losing to Ayala or Claremont to finish the season. But who’s chances do you like better in the Inland playoffs, Charter Oak or Chino Hills? It’s close.
4. Glendora (6-2) — What happened to the blue-collar 6-0 start? Rancho Cucamonga and Etiwanda is what happened to it. Glendora’s better than everyone expected. But they’re not that much better than everyone expected.
5. Diamond Ranch (7-1) – The Southeast Division’s second ranked team found a way to get past Rowland despite 19 suspensions. All that stands in the way of an undefeated league title run are Walnut and Bonita. I say they run the table.
6. Los Altos (7-1) – You find out how good Los Altos is the next two weeks against Bonita and West Covina. We don’t talk about them enough for a one-loss team, but if they sweep their final two, I’m jumping on the wagon.
7. Arroyo (6-1) – I’m starting to wonder if the Knights are serious Mid-Valley contenders. I’m not saying they’re better than Monrovia, but I’m starting to think they might be able to give them a game.
8. Pomona (9-0) — For the time since I’ve done rankings, Pomona is in the top ten and deservedly so. I can also tell you right now when they play San Dimas in Week 10, I’m taking the Devils.
9. Bonita (5-3) — So many thought the Bearcats would win the Hacienda after adding Jake Payton, but they’re in a fight just to make the playoffs. They’re good, but shouldn’t they be better than this?
10. San Dimas (4-4) — I guess I could call the Saints the Boys of September and Men of October, just like Charter Oak for starting 0-4 and going 4-0. But the Valle Vista allows you to do that more than being hot. And truth be told, they haven’t played the hottest VVL team yet, Pomona.
The Rest: 11. Diamond Bar (5-4); 12. Damien (4-4); 13. Rosemead (7-1); 14. South Hills (3-5); 15. Ayala (3-5); 16. West Covina (5-4); 17. Baldwin Park (6-2); 18. Azusa (6-2); 19. Northview (6-2); 20. Bassett (5-3); 21. La Puente (5-3); 22. Duarte (4-4); 23. Claremont (1-7); 24. Covina (4-5); 25. Mountain View (3-5); 26. Walnut (2-6), 27. Rowland (2-7); 28. South El Monte (2-6); 29. Sierra Vista (2-6); 30. Nogales (2-6); 31. Gladstone (2-6); 32. Workman (3-5); 33. El Monte (1-7); 34. Ganesha (2-6), 35. Wilson (1-8).

Fred, does LA submit its stats? Or is this truly a #6 ranked team without any player ranked in the top ten of these categories?

    • FredJ

They report stats, they just don’t have anyone in the top ten

      • Conq ’76

        well, sounds like team work…:)

        • SGVSports

          Conq ’76,

For the first time I agree with you. If you are successful and don’t have anyone in the top ten, that means you have a good team not a good player.

I heard LA lost their qb possibility for the year?

          • Conq ’76

Didn’t get to the game last week but have not seen it reported anywhere that they lost their QB. And what do you mean this is the first time you agree with me? LOL, I haven’t really been posting much for a couple of years now :) !

          • SGVSports

            Conq ’76

            Neither have I

      • Hands Team

Thank you for Picking Pomona against SD…you just did the Saints a huge favor. I do recall you saying after the Northview game that you were no going to pick against them the rest of league. I hope you retweet what you said at half of the Northview game “Sometimes you are wrong, and sometimes you’re really wrong.” Magic shakes for you and Aram after the game!!!

      • Conq ’76

Is the LA QB out, first I heard was on here?

  • blue

3 azusa players in the top ten of every category! Nice

    • CO Parent

That’s because azusa plays in a pop warner league chump…..

      • AMAT 73

        CO Parent ,
Why do you want to jump on Azusa like that ?? You come on crying when people knock CO at #1 and look at you . By the way , now that you have a moment, can we discuss why you feel you deserve one !!!!!

        • SGV_FOOTBALL

I agree, that comment was out of no where. I’m surprised Aztec Pride hasn’t come out guns blazing.

          • inlandfootball

No need to disrespect Azusa, especially when that pop warner league you play in chump has to move down in divisions just to get past the 1st round. CO is playing well right now, but get ready to get punched right in the mouth again in the 2nd round.

          • Not Since 1995

            I agree with InlandFootball 100%

CO Chargers…take your well deserved #1 ranking and go win your next 2 games…!

Think of it this way, this is not Upland…! We in the SGV don’t cheat…

      • blue

Tuff talk over a computer screen aha cmon your a parent talking down on teen agers?? Get outa here!! That ain’t cool man. I would talk more but its not necessary!!

  • RealTalk

How are DBar and West Covina ranked below Bonita when both teams beat them?

    • Wells

That is what I was wondering.

    • PatrickHT

I think Fred and Aram are punishing DB for the DR incident , other than that i cant figure this one out at all…They pretty just dropped out of rankings for all intensive purposes..I guess it would be a 1st for a team to make the playoffs and not even be ranked in the area

    • PatrickHT

My sense tells me that its either that or they dont think DB will make playoffs

  • patriot_dmo@yahoo.com

I’d feel a lot better if CO had a leader in the Rushing stats.

    • SGV_FOOTBALL

I’m with you, just weird not seeing Charter Oak in the rushing stats. Makes you think what would happen if teams completely stopped our air attack….

  • Valley Athletics

I wouldn’t say charter oak is hot . They beat chino hills who they always beat . Nothing new there . Just like amat can’t beat alemany . Chino hills can’t beat CO . The rest if league is a walk in the park for them . Los osos is average .

    • guess who

That “average” Los Osos team had #11 in the state RC on the ropes until late in the 4th qtr last week…they are better than average

  • SGV FB Dad

Fred, your rankings make zero sense. You have reached a point where you seem to want to please too many people. Both you and Aram have absolutely no rational formula for your rankings. From CO being ranked above Amat, to Bonita being ranked above WC and DB, your rankings are idiotic. People call you an Amat Homer, and maybe you are trying to shake that title by doing something idiotic like these rankings. The end result is real football fans simply losing respect for your knowledge of the game.

    • CO Parent

You are obviously an Amat person. And you know what, I will respect the fact that Amat knocked us out when we played them earlier this season. But although you can debate that Amat should be #1, and maybe they should, let CO have its’ moment, because they have turned it around and are kicking butt right now.

      • AMAT 73

        CO Parent,
It’s not the fact that AMAT is not #1 but Fred himself has stated he cannot move a team above a team they have lost to . So if he had Glendora at 1 they should still be 1 and AMAT, CO and CH behind them if he still feels they garner the top 4 slots because nothing has changed in the head to head games between them . The true case is that teams from # 5 on down are the ones who are really being “CHEATED” from their rightful place in the rankings . You and I both know none of the top 4 deserve the #1 or 2,3,4 rankings if you want to be truthful .

  • Husky FB

These rankings have no merit whatsoever if you have CO at 1. Being in the top spot means you are the best, not just on a hot streak, but the overall best. I’m not claiming we are, because we lost to Amat and CO, but to put CO above Amat is just stupid. Amat handled CO easily, while we practically came back to beat Amat. CO lost to much weaker teams than Amat and even us. If you want to put CO above us then ok that I can understand since they beat us. But to have CO above Amat makes no sense what so ever. I agree with you SGV FB Dad, Fred is just trying to please the other readers.

    • CO Parent

You know, the problem I have with posts like this one by Husky FB is that it just sounds like a whining Chino Hills fan. We beat you, again, so live with it. I don’t care how great you played Amat, you still lost. And then we beat you again, because we own you. I’m not a complete unrealistic person, and I admit that Amat beat us convincingly again this year. But just let us have our moment here, and stop hating on the fact that CO is a good team.

      • MonkeyWrench

What makes you think you deserve a moment??? Rankings are earned not deseved. Time to check that weakl sauce at da door.

        • Not Since 1995

When a team like the CO Chargers biaaatch-slap us Huskies around for 3 out of the last 4 years, and we play like a Junior Pee Wee team against a Varsity team, that’s when any Charger gets to tell us we are their biaaatch…! And all we say is “yes, please, may I have another”!

STFU Monkey Wrench…! Just swallow and STFU…!

          • MonkeyWrench

As usual you have your head so far up ur azz you make no sense.

          • Not Since 1995

The CO Chargers biaaatch-slapped the Huskies for 3 out of the last 4 years…! What’s so hard to understand about that, bumb a$$…?

STFU Monkey Wrench…! Just swallow and STFU…!

      • Not So Fast My Friend

CO Parent, I don’t think anyone is hating on CO. I know Husky FB gave you your props and even I did. Having said that, CO doesn’t deserve the top spot, just like MonkeyWrench said below, “Rankings are earned, not deserved.”

Fred went against his own rules in putting CO at no. 1. The same rule he’s been using for years in keeping, putting, holding, stamping, etc, etc. etc. Amat at the no. 1 spot. And even tho this is his ranking, it is for the first time I’m aware of a team with four losses is ranked ahead of other teams with less and one that beat them!

So enjoy your moment in the sun because no one else respects you sitting in the chair. lol

        • GP AKA Green Machine

CO has the best record in a Div 2 league. Weak league or not…4-0 is 4-0. CO is a first place team in the 2nd highest divisional league…CH is a 2nd place team…BA is a last place team in the toughest and highest divisional league…I don’t care if Glendora beat CO… if they lose tonight, They will be a 3rd or 4th place team and they may get a at large berth. SF is a first place team at the moment, but could go from 1st to 3rd place in the next two weeks… D ranch, Monrovia, San Dimas, Pomona are first place teams at the moment….What kills me is that we are so one sided with our views… When you see teams continue to win or lose their league, we make excuses for the uppers and degrade the lowers. One would say well this team only wins because they are a weak league…they are too good for that weak league. On the other hand no one will ever admit that teams who continually finish at the bottom of their upper div league are not good enough for their league. The sierra is special because it is the only local upper division league in our area. I hear Amat Fans say, well if we were in this league/Div we would win it… What is that based upon? Preseason victories that don’t count? Well the only way to prove it is to come down and prove it. When it comes to league and playoffs, you can’t say those things based on preseason wins or losses. You can’t just say the CO would waltz in and beat Dranch for the hacienda title…Or beat Norwalk in the South east title…You just can’t. Preseason is exhibition…it does not count. Therefore Fred can rank it this way… based up who wins when it matters…Despite CO’s issues, they expected to win league, and win when it matter and they did. I would just as bad to rank Last place teams as #1.

          • Not So Fast My Friend

CO is 4-0 in league, but are rankings based on league play or the body of work a team has (ie their record) at that point in time the rankings are done? It’s always the body of work.

If the argument is that CO is 4-0 in league, then so is St. Francis. The tie-breaker for them would be their nonleague schedule where CO lost 4 games and St. Francis, none. If anyone should be in the big chair, then it’s St. Francis.

Looking at their record, SF has waxed La Mirada, Damien and Monrovia. CO’s signature win was against CH. Sure for SF, La Mirada is having an off season, but not Monrovia. Then there is Damien, sitting at 4-4 and 2-1 in league play.

That makes it even more difficult to acknowledge CO in the big chair. Just because they’re hot now?? I’m sorry I can’t support that line of thinking.

  • Dustin ohara

    Glendora beat charter oak js

  • SGV_FOOTBALL

This is how Calpreps see’s it:

#22 in state #1 in the SGV Bishop Amat
#62 in the state #2 in the SGV Chino Hills
#81 in the state #3 in the SGV Charter Oak
#99 in the state #4 in the SGV Glendora
#108 in the state #5 in the SGV Diamond Ranch
#151 in the state #6 in the SGV Los Altos
#153 in the state #7 in the SGV Damien
#180 in the state #8 in the SGV Diamond Bar
#259 in the state #9 in the SGV Ayala
#279 in the state #10 in the SGV Bonita

This year seems so crazy because the rankings are all over the place.

    • GP AKA Green Machine

What do those rankings have to do with Trib rankings? Who’s to say Calpreps is the end all be all?

      • http://bishopamat.org/ Joe Amat

Because it contains Trib teams? And i dont think he said Calpreps is “the end all beall” …but he was clear….”This is how Calpreps sees it”

Interesting info from a source you tout quite well when it comes time for state divisional bowl rankings, if I remember correctly.

        • GP AKA Green Machine

          yeah… I do… Joe

  • Not So Fast My Friend

Am I surprised, yes, very! But I have to give Fred credit for stepping out on the ledge like that. I mean you barely have your heals hanging on with CO at No. 1. Just make sure no one is behind you brother. lol.

  • http://sgvtribune.com/ Galileo

look at the sad state of football in the fish bowl…a 4-4 team that got beat handily by a 5-3 team is atop the poll, enuff said…next week Bassett will be number one, because they are playing the best ball?…heck, why not now? look at their record

    • Not Since 1995

      I agree 100% with Galileo…
Isn’t tryly embarrasing that a once Arrogant and Far Far Superior football program like the Bishop NoMAS lanceritos has to come on this blog and defend their meager and irrelevant position against us Peasants and Common people of San Gabriel Valley football…?

I mean…how dare Glendora, Monrovia, Charter Oak, or even my huskies say that they are #1 in the valley…? That can’t be true…!

I mean…really! Only the 1914 Bishop Amat Lancers are the #1 team in this valley (or insert whatever other old a$$ Lancerito team from last century in calendar year)…! How Dare We…?

You Amat Blow Hards have sunk to a new bottom of the barrel scum low…! And its hilarious to read about it…! Keep it coming…

      Heh…heh! Heh…heh! Heh…heh!

      Not In 2013….

    • guess who

I love how you act like CO is no good….they had a completely new team and didn’t start well….they are playing the best football of anyone in the valley right now, and would beat 3 if not all 4 of the teams that beat them right now…everyone was on CH jock at the start of the year because this was supposed to be a rebuilding year for CO, and then CO goes out and beats them again…you guys that think Amat should be #1 no matter what they do are hilarious….Tell me ANY sport that has rankings that keeps a team at #1 after losing 2 games in a row….what’s a joke is that calpreps has CH ranked 19 spots ahead of CO in the state…should CO be #1 in the Valley…if you go by record, NO, if you go by recent performance, and quality wins, YES…they are going to win their 3rd straight league title and go into the Inland playoffs again where they will probably win a first game and then get outclassed (or should I say out-populated)…Amat will either get lucky in a coin flip, or not make the playoffs again….Funny that nobody makes a big deal about that, yet EVERYONE wants to laugh at CO for getting beaten in the Inland playoffs….CO shouldn’t be playing in the Inland Division…JUST LIKE AMAT SHOULDN’T BE IN THE PAC 5….at least we make the playoffs…CO has ALWAYS won wherever they have been put…every time they move us up a league we win….CH was the force until CO got put there, now CO is the force….happens every time…just because Amat recruits their whole team doesn’t mean CO isn’t a quality team, and if you idiots in the SGV would just appreciate them for what they do instead of banging on them every year when they WIN, Valley football would be alot more enjoyable for all of us….

      • http://sgvtribune.com/ Galileo

Glendora beat CO, Amat pummeled CO, your record is 4-4, maybe you’re on a winning streak because you’re now playing weaker competition, a 4-4 record shouldn’t put you on top of ANYTHING…homer

      • Not So Fast My Friend

My guess why CalPreps has CH ranked ahead of CO is that the Huskies have a stronger nonleague schedule than CO. My second guess is that CO has four losses and as much as you want to try and dismiss those losses as meaningless, you still have them. Come to think of it, you lost to Roosevelt, Los Alamitos, Bishop Amat, and Glendora!! CH’s only nonleague loss was to Bishop Amat, by five, where CO was blown out! Don’t make excuses that CO was a young team, blah, blah, blah. Four losses are four losses.

You complaining sounds like you’re not appreciative of the gift you were given. Enjoy your time in the chair because very few respect the fact that you’re sitting there.

And for the record, the LA Times has CH ranked ahead of CO as well. So far ahead, CO isn’t even on the list. You can’t hide those four losses buddy.

      • AMAT 73

        guess what ,
Bottom line AMAT whipped CO when it counted. But I do like how you write CO would beat 3 if not all 4 of the teams who beat them now . We all know who and what game you have your doubts on .Truth be told , neither AMAT , CO , CH, or Glendora deserve the top ranking .

    ZERO CRED FRED!!!!!

    • Not So Fast My Friend

      Lol. That rhymes. lol

  • Smiley face

I just realized that glendora has beat every team in charter oaks league a long with charter oak and upland! Glendora would be Sierra league champs. Charter oak is beating the teams glendora has already beat! Fred what do you think about that?

    • SGV_FOOTBALL

You beat us by 4 points, if we played again Glendora would lose. I admit it a loss is a loss. You beat Ayala by 3 points, you beat South Hills by 2 points. I think its a safe bet to say CO will win by more then 3 points. Also I am thinking the margin of victory will most likely be a couple touchdowns!

Just look at the South Hills score, Ayala Score and the Los Osos score from this week and then make your assessment. Also you need to worry about the Baseline and not the Sierra…

      • Smiley face

A win is a win! Charter oak could never beat upland or rancho and would get handle in the baseline! By the way next year we will be in the Sierra renamed palmares league with everyone coming back! Can you say league champs!

        • SGV_FOOTBALL

You don’t know if everyone will be back. Your buddy Fink might end up at Amat or at CO where they can really improve his passing game. Kids now a days bounce from school to school.

PS Upland would beat Glendora 9 out of 10 times!

show me one other Glendora honk that wouldn’t agree with me.

      • GP AKA Green Machine

See, these rankings are week to week and who’s hot now…SGV people put too much emphasis on preseason… I will say that Co has the biggest win right now, when it counts. There is something about playing teams when it counts that adds a whole different spin to things. For teams like Mtown…preseason means a little more in rankings, until the Finals and/or State playoffs. If we make it, and beat a top 50 team like Corona Del mar…we could get a bump. For teams that play in the Pac 5/ Inland..league holds heavy weight…. I don’t think you can say Glendora walks through Sierra…Preseason is not league or playoffs…teams can struggle for many reasons…banged up…new young players etc…But come league everyone should know what time it is…so me and you go back in forth regarding rankings…

        • patriot_dmo@yahoo.com

          Well said!

      • Why

Why would anyone look at common opponent scores when one could simply look at the head to head score? If this and if that, if,if,if, head to head you were beaten by Glendora just like you were beaten by Amat. You don’t get mulligans in High School Football unless you somehow meet in the playoffs.

        • SGV_FOOTBALL

First off you need to understand the debate before you start commenting on other peoples comments. @disqus_IvSuiZBUMA:disqus was talking about winning league not about beating CO. There are other teams in the Sierra than just CO. That’s why you need to look at the scores. Plus I highly doubt that Glendora beats Chino Hills. “Mulligans”, that’s a good one, you must be a golfer.

    • patriot_dmo@yahoo.com

Realize this – Los Osos may not want to gift wrap a game for the Tarts tonight. The party might be over. Good luck though. CO would love a playoff rematch. Could you imagine?

  • Conq ’76

Hi Fred, seriously, is there any indication that LA’s QB is injured? SGVSports seems to have heard something…any info you can post will be appreciated.

  • http://bishopamat.org/ Joe Amat

Yes, crazy. Pomona is #1 if you want to use record. If its who would (or did) beat who…we’ll the is only one choice

  • GP AKA Green Machine

Fred Arroyo…they will be out in the 2nd round….You should consider selling that stock option now… Mtown beats them by 3 scores. SD or Paraclete beats them by 1-2 td’s

I think I mentioned in my post that CO shouldn’t be #1 based on record…..should Amat be #1 after losing 2 weeks in a row? No….Should CH be #1 after losing to a terrible 4 loss CO?? NO….SO what do we have to go by….recent play….there has to be some kind of credit for a team getting better, not worse….oh and btw, Los Osos just beat Glendora, and almost beat RC last week….in the last 4 weeks we have beaten Los Osos, and CH…so I guess we should all just agree that Pomona should be #1….none of it really matters anyway, because we all know that CO will go furthest in the playoffs AGAIN this year out of Amat, CH and them…who cares who’s #1 right now

    • Not So Fast My Friend

If you want it simplified, you go off record, which puts St. Francis or Pomona at the one. But since all leagues are not created the same, there’s that pesky Lil problem of strength of schedules vs quality wins. if that’s the case, CO still isn’t at the one. It would be St. Francis by an even larger margin.

Based on your reasoning of whose hot now, then if USC were to win the rest of their games this season, barely beating Oregon State and blowing out everyone else, then because USC got hot, they should suddenly jump back into the rankings, ahead of teams with zero losses, one, or two losses and be BCS eligible! Because they got hot! LMFAO! That wouldn’t happen there and should not have happened here.

Like you said, it doesn’t matter whose no. 1. The season is practically over with the playoffs right around the corner. And we all know that’s the best season because everyone is 0-0 and it’s win or go home for real! Lol

      • guess who

Ya unless you don’t make the playoffs…lol

      • guess who

and btw your St Francis argument doesn’t hold any water….their best win was against #1707 Damien….who they beat 34-16…(CO beat them 35-7) all 4 of CO’s losses were to better teams BY FAR than Damien…the worst being #1051 Glendora, so our 4 losses are to better teams than St. Francis has even played…AND CO has wins over #470 and #557….so SOS is hugely on CO’s side
