  • The stands

I think Koa Haynes and is corps of receivers have a big game against Crespi because Amat’s running game is back. Also, because Hagerty will allow Haynes to run by design and not from busted plays.

    • Boycott lacerito

Hagerty needs to think fast before all the talent will start transferring. Is in desperate need of a win. Not to many underclass men parents happy with this coach right now…. Hagerty is walking on egg shells.

      • The stands

Transferring to where? Who, specifically is considering transferring out?

        • If I only KNEW???!!!??!?!?!?!?

Maybe Chino Hills, so they can shut that guy “Not Got None since 95 up”.

        • The truth and nothing but…

          To Bassett and it’s FREE!

      • If I only KNEW???!!!??!?!?!?!?

I heard that as well. I have a friend that his kid goes to Bishop and he said the same thing. He also said there are issues with the seinors as well, he said they are a bunch of pretty boys and are just worried that they will loose their jobs. Maybe they should not have jobs to begin with. All I know is the freshmen team went undefeated last year and barring what happened for their JV’s yesterday that team is still undefeated as well this year… Look out for AMAT over the next few years.

        • The Lancer way or the highway

Myself as well as many others sitting in the stands every Friday to support our team are sick and tired of hearing about the Freshmen team from last year. That’s nice, you went undefeated now get over it, IT WAS FRESHMEN FOOTBALL! This is VARSITY FOOTBALL NOW. Apples and Oranges, if you don’t like what’s going on then get the heck out of our school because we don’t need your selfish behinds sitting in our stands. You people need to come to grips with the fact that there are better, more mature, more polished kids playing in front of your little Johnny’s.

          • Lancerito

I think the point this guy is trying to make here, oh so sorry let me address you properly. “Mr Senior” is that Amt has some really good talent coming up and will make some big waves over the next few seasons. If you take a step back and take the blinders off to your little Johnny as you like to put it. He had his chance, did not do anything with it and maybe should not be on the field. Now go on about your rambling about how this is varsity football.

          • Boycott lacerito

Wow!!! U brought tears to my eyes. I think I might change my name…very true they has there chance now it’s time for the new bread

          • Lancerito

Lancer way or the highway was probably the same guy that said “THIS IS TACKLE FOOTBALL NOW”. We aint playing that baby flag footbal anymore and his 10 year old was beat out by the 8 year old, oh wait that did not happen because this guy was the head coach!

          • Boycott lacerito

          • Boycott lacerito

Well looks like the highway for u buddy… Expect this new tradition for the next 2 years. So just sit back and enjoy the ride. Cuz u will be hearing them all night long

          • Boycott lacerito

Sorry my new best friend it was ment for the highway guy

          • Here’s JOHNNY, or Little Johnn

          • Inland_FB_Fan

If Amat’s freshmen are “dominant” at the lower levels year in and year out, Why isn’t that transferring into success @ the Varsity level?

          • Here’s JOHNNY, or Little Johnn

They have not been dominant until last year.

      • Lancerito

        Here’s JOHNNY!!!!! I’m Back!!!

        • Boycott lacerito

Back from where under hagerty’s desk??? The upperclassmen have no heart and don’t know what it takes to win. Yesterday the JV won again to make it 19-0.

          • Lancerito

Dam, so they did win again…

    • Lancerito

Koa needs to lead his team to victory over the next two weeks and get the MIGHTY lancers from AMAT into the playoffs. The upperclassmen need to sack up and take it to Crespi tonight.

  • The truth and nothing but…

Let’s not waste our time talking about Amat. It’s the school across the street that is making all the noise and it’s FREE.

    • If I only KNEW???!!!??!?!?!?!?

Are you serious??? I am in no joking mood today and right now i am ROFLMFAO!

      • The truth and nothing but…

Read the headline, I am serious as a HA!

        • If I only KNEW???!!!??!?!?!?!?

Oh, Ok. I usually dont follow Jr All American footbal, but I will check out this team from Bassett. Is this team filled with 10 and 11 year olds??

          • The truth and nothing but…

When BA EVER becomes relevant in the Pac 5 than MAYBE you can make fun of others, until than be irrelevant, QUIETLY.

          • Lancerito

LOL, STFU while you are ahead. You know room to talk there mr big mighty Bassett… See i cant even say that without a smile.

          • Here’s JOHNNY, or Little Johnn

Sounds like some need to be more realistic here….

          • The truth and nothing but…

            BA off season starts tonight!

          • Inland_FB_Fan

Considering what Bassett has to work with and the history of that program, I have to give them props. What’s Amat’s excuse???

          • Lancerito

Mr IFF, thanks for making an appearance….. We have no excuse. And will not make one. I as well as others are very frustrated with the performances. We have the talent to do great things but continue to shot ourselves in the foot. So yes you are accurate, but excusses will not come from me. Sorry not to bite on the bait your have casted in the water.

          • Inland_FB_Fan

No bait thrown. It just seems like every year about this time, it is a repeat. “Hags must go”…”the coaches blew it”, etc. What do you think the real problem is that is holding Amat from getting to that “next level”?

          • Lancerito

At some point the coaches can only take you so far. The players on the field have to band together as a team and take it from there. The link in that part of the chain is broken. No leaders and no winning attitude or heart. Seems like some are more concerned about how they look in the uniform vs perform on the field. Yeah it does get old each year, but it should get better. The lower level teams play with heart and desire!

          • AMAT 73

Beg to differ . In close games they are usually won by the right moves that the coaches make . You know all to well if you were at last weeks game that the team did enought o win that game . The coaches let the team down and it was told to the team that way by the staff right after the game . You tell me one kid who didn’t leave it all the field last Friday night . We will see what the coaches learn by their mistakes in clock managment and some questionable play calling . Yes we have some great kids at the lower level and they will have their time under the lights and some of the better ones are doing it now . Let’s see what happens tonight as I expect better out of all , and I hope you do also .

          • Lancerito

Oh believe me Mr 73 I am here for the long hall. As for calling out kids and numbers, that is not the game I play. Yes questionable play calling of course is a factor, but the coaches depend on the kids to make the plays. Lets leave it at that. I will be watching tonights game as well. Maybe right next to you or him or her…

          • AMAT 73

            Lancerito ,
I agree on naming names but I can’t understand your no winning attitude or no heart statement . Unless you are the parent of a lower classman, then I totally understand the comment , which by your last statement leads me to think that . I just don’t see where you are coming from . You’re wrong on your coaches can only take you so far line . Coaches take you over the top to victories and in some cases to losses in close fought games .it’s their job to stay level headed and not let their emotions get in the way of victory . The underclassmen who have risen to the top are playing some outstanding ball right now . Next year there will be more and by the looks of our freshmen team a few more sophs on varsity next season also . Enjoy the game tonight and I believe we will both be happy with the outcome .

          • 73…that comment I was saving? SGV FB Dad dropped it before I did above.

          • AMAT 73

I have agree with that also . I have a few more wishes but I would like to see what you say . I also would like to see a change on the other side of the ball . Would you agree.

          • I think we’ve lost our way a bit. A couple key coaches moving on (on both sides if the ball), and Hags infatuation with on-campus leftovers has hurt some. He returned our identity to establish the run, throw about 20 passes a game, play field position, and win 24-14. The last couple years we are throwing about 10 more passes a game, got caught up in trying to play a different brand of football. Time to reflect

          • 12th man

At some point the players have to believe in what the coach is selling & preaching..Otherwise the captain will sink with his ship..

          • AMAT 73

Most if not all AMAT bloggers have some form of AMAT or LANCERS in their screen name . Don’t think that every moron who comes on bagging on lower lavel team is an AMAT honk . Especially like that fool who lead off this thread . Anyway we are to busy bickering amongst ourselves right now . Just see below .

    • Boycott lacerito

Also with a high crime rate

      • The truth and nothing but…

All stereotype, just because the demographic at Bassett can’t afford a private school education doesn’t make them criminals. Take a walk around the school at lunch, everything is structured. I don’t know too many criminals that hangs out at hand ball courts. The head of security is the varsity baseball coach and a former Bassett alum who the kids respect. Hector Spathias, the varsity HC and long time teacher, also roams the school during lunch. All the facilities are brand new. The basketball gym are as nice as a small college. The football turf was just installed four short years ago. Why pay to play on grass when you can play on new facilities coached by some of the best coaches around for free? Yes, I will put Spathias, Jerry Urias, and Williams up against Haggerty and his staff any day. I hope Amat’s administration doesn’t get any idea and start sniffing around our coaches.

        • AMAT 73

Yes Bassett has come a long way these past couple of years . Nice field and good facilities . The head coach has done wonders with the program and I wish them much continued success . Hope they make a deep playoff run as it will be good for the Bassett community . Good luck with the rest of the season .

        • SGV FB Dad

Don’t worry, Amat is very happy with its coaching staff and tradition. What Bassett has done this year is awesome, and it bolds well for their coaching staff and the school overall. But let’s be real, Bassett and most teams in the SGV don’t even register on Amat’s radar. Not because Amat is any better than any other school, but because the vast majority of these schools will never be at a level to play Amat. So why worry about them or their coaching staffs? It’s just a different monster.

WTH Aztec Pride, at least cut and paste the teams and leagues that do not pertain to the SGV.

        Football is state wide! LOL…

        • SGV_FOOTBALL

          HAHAHA good one.

      • D-Mo

I think South Hills will prove CalPreps wrong with a win over Damien tonight.
On another note, Bassett had a pretty good team in ’74, I believe. The running back’s name was Foster. He was one bad wamajama. I am sure there were others over the years – right?

Projection for Diamond Ranch game was pretty close…Final Score Dranch 47 Walnut 0

  • 12th man

Big game for Amat..not only does it have playoff implications but this could also be the beginning of the end for coach Hags~….Amat should only have 1 loss thus far..It seems the great coaching staff of the Lancers can’t get on the same page..Last week’s loss was a huge disappointment to the players from BA who did everything in their power to keep this one close…Coach Hags is a good coach & great person..I just think it’s time for the Lancers to move in a different direction..Amat needs a “great” coach someone with championship credentials & experience who can strategize & out smart his opponents in the clutch when the game is on the line…I watched a depleted Santa Margarita team upset Mater Dei last week..sure! some of it had to do with the kids playing with heart & adrenaline..but if you watch the game closely..Mater Dei was simply “out-coached from beginning to end! Santa Margarita had no business winning that game with all the current injuries the team was facing..

Oh! by the way~ Harry Welch will be retiring after the season…Any chance someone from the SGV can talk him into coaching again? Specifically Amat lol…Just had to throw it out there! (hook-line-&-sinker) see who bites? hahaha~

    • SGV FB Dad

Actually the administration loves Hags, as do the majority of the parents. He is a very good coach and a much better person. Now, I will be the first to say that I have wanted to pull out my hair after last weeks Alemany loss, and also at the RC game. In both games the coaching staff lost the game for Amat. The reason I can’t get too angry at Hags is that he relinquished offensive play calling to Verti. I think the Verti experiment should be over.

      • Real talk

Ok I think Hags is a good coach. Saying that Amat is not that power house they use to be. Time to go down in div…

  • Not So Fast My Friend

Amat lost to Crespi? I said not to sleep on Crespi. Coach Thomas has an excellent coaching staff in place and a very good OC. Come Monday, Amat should be out of the Top Five on everyone’s board.

Great Job AZUSA, being the only undefeated team in the Montview League and this assures you the Montview League Title! Way to go Scherf, and one more game to go!!!

  • SEMHS FAN 3481

so you see, I knew it would happen and it did. SEMHS got whooped by Arroyo, we all knew that going into MVL play.

Preseason Game #1 vs. Nogales – WON 38-6
Preseason Game #2 vs. Montebello – LOSS 57-21
Preseason Game #3 vs. Northview – LOSS 49-14
Preseason Game #4 vs. Maranatha – LOSS 42-32
Preseason Game #5 vs. San Marino – LOSS 63-14
Season Game #1 vs. El Monte – WON 50-20
Season Game #2 vs. Rosemead – LOSS 30-7
Season Game #3 vs. Gabrielino – LOSS 47-0
Season Game #4 vs. Arroyo – LOSS 42-0
Season Game #5 vs. Mountain View – ?

As it stands, SEMHS is 2-7 (1-3 in the MVL). and since last week, have been eliminated from ANY CIF-SS Playoff hopes, like if they really had any to begin with, let’s be brutally honest! It’s a sure bet SEMHS will be 2-8 (1-4 in the MVL) next week. Mountain View took out El Monte tonight. They will do the same to SEMHS next week. What a horrible year for SEMHS.

  • blue

Azusa 35, sierra vista 13* Great job Azusa.
Good job to duarte as well

Blue, you should have also said. AZUSA (claimed) the Montview League Title, being the only team not losing and Duarte winning tonight! Hope your brother played outstanding!

      • blue

Yes that to! And thanks!! Ill let him know!
Next week isgoing to be a good one!

      • Steve Ramirez

That’s a share of the league title, AP. Bassett can still claim a piece and be the No. 1 playoff rep with a victory. Bassett could also miss the playoffs with a loss.

        • AZTEC PRIDE

Steve on my comment above, if you noticed real good I placed brackets around (claimed)! By the way AZUSA was one of the first teams in the SGV to get a playoff berth in the Northwest division with last weeks win! How’s that Steve, for being on top of things! AZUSA FOOTBALL.

  • SEMflockofEAGLES

Eagles lack the fight needed to compete with arroyo… We all knew it was a rebuilding year, but this is are they really this bad?

  • SEMHS FAN 3481

let me make it perfectly CLEAR. I am an ALUMNI of the CLASS of 1999 of SEMHS – I do not post on the “Mid Valley Sports” page, nor have I ever. There’s a bunch of chisme going on there from the night Rosemead WHOOPED SEMHS, talking about why last year’s DC Reynoso left/quit/etc. and apparently there is a consensus among parents to have Ibis Aguilar resign as coach.

there’s two posters/nicknames on there “SEM Eagle fan” and “Anonymous” – I am none of those two. I only post here. Sorry just making sure people know I aint the one causing ruckus.

  • Conq ’76

Congratulations to Bonita, they out-quicked, out-toughed and out-executed LA. Payton was exceptional however The Bearcats had a few other offensive weapons to choose from as well. STILL, it would have been nice if someone either from the Trib or elsewhere could have informed us that LA’s QB was out. They became a one-trick-pony team last night. Would not have made a difference though, based on what I saw from Bonita but if LA had been at full strength, the night would have been a bit more competitive.

    • RealTalk

Would have made a world of difference!!! LA qb #11 is the glue that holds them together. He’s really talented, elusive and very smart in the pistol offense. Anyone know why he was out??

And just a note: I’m not an LA fan, I’m not hating on Bonita (Great Job Jake Payton) I’ve just seen this qb run his team and he’s damn good at it (7-1) when he’s in…

      • Conq ’76

Yeah, but don’t know if he would have helped LA stop Bonita’s offense. Might have been 64-62 or something…:)

        • RealTalk

He would have definitely helped to put more points on the board, better clock management, opened up the passing game etc… It’s momentum…. Game flow. WC kept Bonita off the field most of the second half

          • Conq ’76

Yeah. LA’s passing game last indeed lacking last night….Silva gave it his all, but…

          • RealTalk

            Why was he out???

          • Conq ’76

Been asking all week, asked both Fred and Aram, never got a reply…some sort of injury I assume.

          • IC Green

Not even Payton Manning would have helped LA beat Bonita Friday night. I don’t know if the coaches said something different or if the players themselves just decided enough was enough. Whatever the case, this was a different team than the one we’ve seen for the past 4-5 games. More like the Bo-hi we saw early in the season.

This team was loaded when the season began and is clearly still loaded now. DRanch is supposed to beat Bonita and they may well do so. But if Medrano can keep his boys loose and they play like they did against LA, watch out.

          • Not accurate

Bonita has difficulty against teams with speed. LA was a better match up for them then DB & WC. DR will be a difficult match up for BoHi due to the fact that DR has good speed at the skill positions.

          • IC Green

Everybody has their problems against speed. That is not Bonita’s problem. Bonita is loaded with talent and has proven they can play with anybody.

          • Tom Foolery

Bonita lost a close game to Glendora (a team not well know for their speed) but lost by 2 td’s to West Covina and 3 td’s to Diamond Bar (both teams that have good speed) based on those last 2 loses, I wouldn’t exactly say that Bonita has proven they can play with anybody. Diamond Ranch is going to present similar difficulties to Bonita with their speed. Bonita, however, has one ace up their sleeve in that Diamond Ranch has already clinched their league title and might decide to take the night off. On the other hand Diamond Ranch might realize that playoff seeding are on the line decide that they really want this win.

I doubt Diamond Ranch will take the night off even though they are league champions. Every game for them is playoff seeding and that win might put them as the number seed due to strength of schedule over Norwalk.

          • SGV 4 30 Years

DR will not be in cruise control vs BoHi. There have been some pretty intense games between these 2 over the years. I’ve seen both teams. DR’s defense is going to be tough against the run, so I don’t see Payton having a big night. DR has the most playmakers of any team I’ve seen this year, plus the most physical line. Bonita will battle, but in the end I see DR a 35-13 winner.

          • IC Green

I hate to agree but DR wins by 2 TD’s.

          • Tom Foolery

No chance that Diamond Ranch leap frogs an undefeated Norwalk in the CIF polls. Not to mention that these two teams have a common opponent and Norwalk’s margin of victory was twice that of Diamond Ranch over Diamond Bar.

          • IC Green

You didn’t read my post carefully, Tom. Speed is not Bonita’s problem. I don’t care who they’ve played or what the score was. Bonita may have problems but SPEED IS NOT one of them.

          • Tom Foolery

I’ve seen Bonita play this year and I would definitely say that SPEED IS a problem for them.

          • IC Green

Just because this fast team or that fast team beat Bonita doesn’t mean Bonita has a problem with speedy teams. It just means a fast team beat them.

Again, speed has nothing to do with Bonita’s problems. Whether their problems have been resolved or not, it may have come too late to save what should’ve been a great season and a memorable bon voyage to the Hacienda.

          • RealTalk

Bonita beat LA without some key players. DR is at full strength so don’t expect a 6 td night by Jake Payton.

How good would San Dimas be if they had Jake Payton. Good to hear about a player doing real well! He’s definitely going to the next level of play!

        • Conq ’76

Yep, i know it is a cliche’, but Payton was able to run through LA arm tackles that would likely have brought down an average RB. Payton fought through many and I hope Ziola takes the time to explain to his defense that finishing tackles on a back like Payton is of paramount importance if they hope to limit his success.

        • Cover2

SD would have been either undefeated or 8-1, they would have beat a Potts less Monrovia for sure. Imagine what he would have done in league #manamongboys

    • reality

Nice post. I’m sure Bohi fans appreciate it. Did not know the Conqs were using a back up. It made a difference especially in the second half. Inability to pass when needed put to much pressure on your great runner and bonita was able to stack the middle. Does anyone know how the coin flips will work?.

        Hacienda Playoff Picture –

        1. BoHi beats DR and LA beats WC = #1 DR, #2 BoHi, #3 LA with DB as possible wildcard
        2. DR beats BoHi and LA beats WC = #1 DR, #2 LA, #3 DB with WC as possible wildcard
        3. BoHi beats DR and WC beats LA = #1 DR, #2 WC, #3 BoHi with LA as possible wildcard
        4. DR beats Bohi and WC beats LA = #1 DR, #2 WC, #3 DB with as BoHi possible wildcard

All scenarios assume that DB beats Walnut.

Scenario #4 requires a point system to be used to break a 3 way tie with DB, LA, Bohi. DB wins with the tie breaker with more quality wins vs Bohi, WC, and Walnut (projected). Bohi then wins remaining tie breaker with LA due to Head to Head (after DB is elevated to #3).

Scenario’s #1,2, and 3 are all based on record and Head to Head eliminations.

  • SEMflockofEAGLES

Prediction: The South men get fired up and beat mountain view! End the season on winning note and are favorites along with El Monte to win league next year!

  • Im Just Saying

LA had starting MLB #44 Justin Oniel out, starting DL/OL #56 Brandon Hayashi out, and starting QB Christian Hacegaba out… I am pretty positive that all three players would have made a TREMENDOUS difference… Not to mention OC Steven Burke likes to only call run plays apparently ! He needs to learn how to coach. Silva was doing fine while passing the ball. He nay not be as mobile as Hacegaba but he did fine. With all three starters in im sure they win

    • RealTalk

Will they be back for the WC game?

Just came back from watching Citrus College play El Camino, must say watching Football at CITRUS stadium is a place to be on a Saturday afternoon!Citrus was losing in the first quater 13-0 but came back big and won 42-28! Went to go see Jose Nunez#8 WHO’S TEARING IT UP out their! Also was great to see Desmond Reed playing for EL CAMINO, and it was great seeing ex-players from AZUSA out there still playing Football! Great Job OWLS!

Well, It’s been a gut wrenching week as we approach money time…The Big story is Amat…What luck to have to face Coach Troy in league after beating him in week 0 last year. No Playoffs, that’s a real let down after this years start. No matter what level you play on, you really want make the playoffs. I really hope Amat shows some pride, and end the season with a win. 1 win in the serra play will really hold things together over there…If they go 0-4 in league, those super sophs will have a lot to think about next year…Good Luck next week.

The other big story is Charter Oak…Boy they know how to slide over there. Another league title, you can’t hate on that…Hopefully they can make a small run in the Inland.

There are two lower level Marquee games next week on the West and East side…You know It, Monrovia vs San Marino, and San Dimas vs Pomona. To bad they are on the same night….These games are for top four seedings and in the inside track to the Midvalley title…

Dranch is not the same team that lost to Ayala early…They have a serious shot, especially when Downey is Losing to trash Paramount…Dominguez!! The Dons are cool

The hacienda is the so competitive, so exciting..they are going to get 4 teams in….you got to let four teams In..

How about J Martin and The D falcons!!! Big blue will be going to the playoffs….

Tough loss for St Francis 🙁

Ayala Came up short…at leas they beat Dranch…that’s the only bright spot 2013

La Mirada almost pull it off…They can still get revenge..maybe…

Look at Azusa…quietly handling their bizness.

    • Not So Fast My Friend

Gut wrenching to say the least, but not surprising when you look over the season. I was sharing with Amat 73 some of the cracks I believe they had in their shield. No reason to repeat them all over again, but looking back you could almost tell this was coming. Maybe not against Crespi, but perhaps the following week (this week).

Amat has to make some changes. It’s not necessarily who they play in nonleague, it’s more to do with the coaching staff being overly dependent on their athletes to make plays as opposed to developing and utilizing a smart game plan.

I said at the start of the season CH may not have the horses they had last year, but I thought they would be more balanced. And in being balanced, they would be a better team. I had a couple of hacks try to rip that, but that assessment has born fruit. They are 7-2 this season. Numbers being what they are, some are good and some are bad. However, the most interesting ones, given the talent, tell a lot. (they haven’t entered the stats from last Friday).

      2012 Rushing Avg. 5.36 (10 games)
      2013 Rushing Avg. 5.27 (8 games)

2012 Avg Yards per Pass. 11.5 yards (10)
      2013 Avg.Yards per Pass. 13.9 yards (8)

      2012 Assisted tackles 151 (10)
      2013 Assisted tackles 246 (8)

      2012 Sacks 25 (10)
      2013 Sacks 27 (8)

Defense is about the same in points against and they’re not putting up a lot of points like they did last year, but one interesting stat is their winning percentage in 2013 (8 games) is .778 and in 2012, (10 games) is .689.

Same goes for Amat who averages for last season were better than this season. Younger team? Maybe. Point being, coaching and smart game planning is pivotal in the development of a young team. Both schools have young teams.

      • AMAT 73

When you listed our short comings earlier they were pretty much on target. What triggered my responce was you saying the team was playing bad . Many of us in the stands could clearly see what the weaknesses were on the field on both offense and defense . My issue has been with the coaching plain and simple .The blame is always the head guy fault as he runs the team so Hags has that on his shoulders . Do I think he should go ???? maybe , maybe not as he does bring in the players but if he stays he must make changes with his staff . The OC must go for sure as his play calling leaves much to be desired and I think he still needs seasoning in that department . You can say the same for the DC . Both of them were previous head coaches of the team and maybe that has caught up with them wanting too much of their footprint on the team . We defintely have the talent , now it’s time to match that talent in the coaching department .

        • Not So Fast My Friend

Ouch! I didn’t know they were both former HCs. That’s a mix for you!! Not quite the same, but we were discussing the state of the Steelers this morning in the office. Mike Tomlin needs to make some changes. Todd Haley is the easy one, but the harder one is on the defensive side. Looks like Haggerty has the same set of choices to make.

BA is a talented team. If they’re not performing, then the rule of thumb after the players is the coaches coaching them. If that’s the OC, then so be it. There is no reason for BA to have lost the games that they did in the manner in which they lost them.

  • Leo Tolstoy

Bishop Amat won the battle but lost the war, having played CO and CH only proved there was a marginal difference in athletic talent or coaching ability. Parents and players who were on the fence decided it was okay to stay home and save their money and play with their neighborhood friends. In fact, Rancho Cucamonga proved that this year beating the Lancers heads up. Sooner or later the bully on the block gets his and Bishop Amat got theirs after “challenging themselves” with the likes of DR, CO, CH, Cathedral and RC when Serra, Oaks Christian and Chaminade would have been better fits. That’s the problem with playing local teams, you lose their respect. A key component to attracting the best talent. That said Bishop Amat still does a heck of a job three times a year, too bad the season is 14 games – or at least it used to be.

    • Not So Fast My Friend

Interesting choice of schools BA should have played. I don’t believe BA’s talent level could withstand the onslaught of talent at Serra. I’m not sure how they would have fared against Oaks or Chaminade. My short guess is they would have ended up with more losses. I think the mix of schools with CO, CH and RC were good choices. If you were going to drop one, which they should, it needs to be CO.

CO ended up a blow out. It was what it was.
CH played them tough again. They match up well against BA.
RC is a good test for BA because of the volume of athletes.

Given the realignment of the leagues for 2014, my long term guess is CH will want to schedule someone else “stronger” than BA, if they can. Maybe Mater Dei, Servite, OLu, etc.

RC will probably do the same

      • Don

Wow, what they say about great minds must really be true because when I think about it, scheduling anyone lower than a top ten team in the state is probably a waste of East Diamond Bar’s valuable pre-season time. Same with the Cucamongers.

Dump those weak sister Southeast and Central teams and replace them with the likes of Serra and Bosco. Might as well get on the De La Salle dance card too; don’t know how far ahead you have to book that bad boy but hey, once on the old dynasty track, best to just go for it.

Too bad all those Texas boys like to stay in state, Carrol or Allen would be a suitable tune up for the mighty huskies . . . I hear Gorman takes the occasional road trip though.

        • Not So Fast My Friend

Totally agree! I enjoy the games against out-of-state schools and games against schools out of the area, via San Diego, or up North.

      • Leo Tolstoy

Playing local schools only solidifies and entrenches players NOT to come to Bishop Amat. Why play there when competition for playing time is fierce, and limited, when you can play at your local school and get to play Varsity four years? Rio Ruiz “only” played Varsity three years, anywhere else he plays four. To parents and kids that’s a deal breaker.

For example at CO Travis Santiago started three years at Qb while Rio Ruiz started only two, at CO Ruiz plays Varsity all four years, maybe not at QB but certainly he gets on the field. By the same token, for the two sport athletes local public schools get that done better. Bonita, Northview, South Hills, Glendora and San Dimas have several success stories in that regard. That said, it would have been better for BA to avoid being draw into the “CH/CO” debate especially when both those schools have better playoff success and equally good showing with less public/alumni scrutiny.

Today’s players want four year opportunities to shine, that won’t happen at Bishop Amat. Today’s parents want to push administrations around, that won’t happen at Bishop Amat. Today’s parents want to convince themselves they know more than the coaches, that won’t happen at Bishop Amat. Today’s players and parents delude themselves that it’s everyone else’s fault they didn’t get a D1 ride, that won’t happen at Bishop Amat. So why play at Bishop Amat? Brotherhood, why else?

  • Cover2

Can finally put the Amat talk to rest and move on to teams that will be playing for something that matters. Hacienda is going to be exciting this week. Can San Marino play with Monrovia? Is Pomona for real?

  • Aaron

Only thing I have to say about our game against DR…give Payton the ball, just ride him until he won’t go no more.

    • IC Green

Giving Payton the ball all night won’t be enough. This is all about the team.

    • reality

Aaron I get you but to expect a repeat performance by Payton against the terrific DR line, backers and corners is unrealistic.Their
hope rests on the continuing improvement of Tanner Diebold and the ability of his receivers to hang on to the ball. They showed marked improvement on Friday. Bonita is always in every game no matter who they play but in this one in order for the Bearcats to win everyone has to have a career game. I think DR is that good. Plus alot of their players had a week off and time to heal up and will be anxious to get back on the field on their home turf. Very tough hill for Bonita to climb..

  • IC Green

Please tell me why Bonita plays DRanch on a Thursday?

    • Not accurate

The entire Hacienda plays on Thursday and does so every year on week 10.

      • Not accurate

My bad, looks like DB and Walnut are breaking with Hacienda tradition and playing their last game of the season on Friday. Probably has something to do with it being a rival game and wanting to make sure they get full capacity at the game.

  • SGVSports

The only undefeated team in the SGV (9-0)?

I will be the first to say they will loss in the playoffs (Monrovia) and maybe even next week.

I will also be the first to say under second year Coach Jamieson Pomona has had an excellent season. This is a very young team with only a couple senior starters. They have the backup sophomore quarterback running the offense, and doing an excellent job at that. I’ve watched every team except Nogales in the VVL and this kid is clearly the best quarterback. I never saw the starter so can’t comment.

San Dimas will be a very difficult challenge for Pomona with the Wing-T. San Dimas will attempt to use Pomona’s speed against them, the kids need to stay home and not over pursue. Pomona will make more mistakes (turnovers) than San Dimas. San Dimas will have a tuff time on the defensive side of the ball dealing with the spread and speed of Pomona. They haven’t played a TEAM with that much TEAM speed.

    Credit where credit is due-

Fred tends to give Pomona credit where credit is due, now Aram is a different story.

It is very common knowledge that Aram has a hard on for Pomona, not sure why?

If this was San Dimas or Los Altos at 9-0 Aram would already be in line at the snack shack waiting for the Week 10 game to start.

    • The Saints

What are you talking about? We scrimmaged DRanch and played DBar and Monrovia, all teams with as much speed if not more then Pomona.

      • SGVSports

Haven’t seen Monrovia play, have seen diamond bar and they don’t have the team speed that Pomona has. Once again they run a vary similar offense as Pomona and you lost to them. You also lost to Monrovia, so what does that say about San Dimas. You are attempting to compare Pomona to teams that you lost to.
