TRIBUNE SUPER 35 RANKINGS
1. Bishop Amat (5-2) – The Lancers move back to No. 1 following the bye week thanks to Glendora and Chino Hills’ losses. Amat can prove it deserves the No. 1 spot by finally beating Alemany on Friday, a game it has to have if it has any hopes of winning the Serra.
2. Glendora (6-1) — The Tartans’ stay at No. 1 was brief after last week’s thorough defeat by undefeated Rancho Cucamonga. But the Tartans, who lost their first game, only drop one spot. They have to continue to prove they belong starting with Etiwanda next.
3. Charter Oak (3-4) — The Boys of September have become the Men of October with three straight impressive wins after starting 0-4. The Chargers defeated Los Osos, Damien, Chino Hills and are 2-0 in the Sierra League.
4. Chino Hills (5-2) — Perhaps nobody (except I) saw the Huskies’ loss coming against Charter Oak and now they have to regroup to stay in contention for the league title should Charter Oak stumble along the way.
5. Diamond Ranch (6-1) – The Southeast Division’s second ranked team will find out if there are any punishments following Friday’s brawl with Diamond Bar. But the Panthers still got the win, 34-20, and are in great position to win Hacienda.
6. Los Altos (6-1) – Except for its only loss to Diamond Ranch, the Conquerors have been great and should get another win this week vs. Walnut before finishing with Bonita and West Covina — two toughies to end the regular season.
7. Bonita (5-2) — The Bearcats return from a bye week to host West Covina. ‘Cats running back Jake Payton used the week off to take a recruiting visit to Purdue.
8. Arroyo (6-1) – The Knights could find Mountain View difficult this week, but the Knights should get the win and probably won’t have another tough game until the finale against Rosemead.
9. Diamond Bar (5-3) — For the past few years the theme at Diamond Bar is it doesn’t win the big games. And once again, it lost another biggie at home to Diamond Ranch. Now you have to wonder if it will finish strong enough to make the playoffs.
10. San Dimas (4-3) — The Saints are so dominant in the Valle Vista they’re averaging 50 points a game and winning by a 43-point margin. That, my friends, is ridiculous.

Last Week: Aram picked up two games to pull within two. Aram missed taking Chino Hills over Charter Oak, Ayala over Damien and La Puente over Duarte. I also missed taking La Puente along with taking Covina over Baldwin Park, Diamond Ranch over Diamond Bar, Mountain View over Gabrielino and Workman over Ganesha.

This week’s games and predictions With Crespi beating Loyola and Alemany knocking off Notre Dame the Serra is a crapshoot, with only Crespi, having played just one game, the only team without a loss. Even though Amat lost its opener to Notre Dame, it still controls its own destiny by winning, and they have to win Friday at home against Alemany or they could all but forget their playoff chances. Amat has never beaten Alemany since Alemany joined the Serra, and Amat’s coming off a bye week, so there are no excuses. Take Amat, they have to have it and they will get it. West Covina at Bonita is another close one, but I’m taking surging Bonita, who appears to be getting its second wind. Can Glendora bounce back after its first defeat and beat Etiwanda? They should.

For all intents and purposes, Darren Murphy appeared to have his dream job coaching baseball at Northview High School.
He’s a Viking alumnus and helped build the program into one of the best in the Valley.
But there are certain jobs that you have to answer when called.
Murphy did so, agreeing to become just the third South Hills baseball coach since 1975. He succeeds Kevin Smith, who took a similar position at Mt. San Antonio College.

The end of the Fox Sports Video shows the fight between Diamond Bar and Diamond Ranch. CIF is aware of the incident and has been in contact with representatives for both schools. If anything happens as a result, it probably won’t be ruled on until at least Monday. For now, fast forward to the end of the video and you be the judge.

The CIF-Southern Section was in touch with Diamond Bar and Diamond Ranch high school officials Saturday morning as part of its initial investigation of an on-field brawl between the schools’ football teams during a Hacienda League game Friday night.
The teams game was halted with a little more than three minutes left by game officials after the melee occurred with Diamond Ranch leading, 34-20.
Diamond Ranch coach Roddy Layton said three of his players received injuries from the fight and were unable to perform their usual Saturday duties. Layton also said a parent of one of the players may file criminal charges against an adult who allegedly forced a Diamond Ranch player to the ground.

Rancho Cucamonga 37, Glendora 9 — The battle of the unbeatens was a dud, but still a great start for the Tartans.
Hacienda League
Diamond Ranch 24, Diamond 20 — Game called after brawl breaks out between players with just more than three minutes left. But more importantly, Diamond Ranch in firm control of the Hacienda.
Los Altos 42, Rowland 0 — Conquerors remain in contention in the Hacienda with blowout over the Raiders.
West Covina 42, Walnut 21 — After back-to-back losses to open the Hacienda, the Bulldogs win their second straight to get back in the playoff hunt.
Sierra League
Damien 24, Ayala 7 — Not surprised by the win, but surprised by how comfortably they got it.
Charter Oak 24, Chino Hills 17 — The Chargers comeback tour continued, winning their third straight after dropping their first four of the season.
South Hills 23, Claremont 20 — Huskies win sets up a dandy on Thursday when it hosts Charter Oak at Covina District.
Mission Valley League
Arroyo 47, El Monte 6 — Knights blowout last year’s Mission Valley League champions.
Gabrielino 28, Mountain View 21 — The Vikings seem like they’re in every game, but finishing and getting the W is a problem.
Rosemead 37, South El Monte 7 — Panthers remain on course with Arroyo in chase for Mission Valley title.
Montview League
Bassett 45, Sierra Vista 30 — The Olympians are 4-0 in the Montview. When was the last time they were in contention for a league?
Ganesha 35, Workman 28 — For two teams who have been blown out a lot this season, nice for both to be in a competitive game.
Azusa 49, Gladstone 0 — It’s usually one of the areas best rivalries, but this was not one of the classics.
La Puente 30, Duarte 29 — Warriors bounce back after last weeks loss to Bassett.

Valle Vista League
Baldwin Park 37, Covina 34 — The Colts jumped out to a big lead but the Braves rallied to pull it out.
San Dimas 44, Nogales 0 — Every game in the Valle Vista has been a blowout for the Saints.
Pomona 53, Wilson 10 — The Red Devils are now the areas only undefeated team after improving to 7-0.

BIGGEST SURPRISES
1. Glendora (6-0) – Glendora was 3-7 and 1-4 in the Baseline with nothing to make you believe they could turn it around. I thought they would take a year off and wait for the Palomares league. Then some sophomore QB name Matt Fink came along and here they’re, undefeated and ranked sixth in the powerful Inland Division.
2. Diamond Ranch (5-1) — The Panthers didn’t seem like they were improving in recent years, going 7-4 last year and getting routed 49-0 by La Serna in the first round of the playoffs. It has been a long time since coach Roddy Layton guided them to back-to-back title games, and was wondering if they would ever get back or even close. This could be the year, they’re ranked second in the Southeast and can take control of the Hacienda with a win at Diamond Bar, Friday.
3. Pomona (6-0) — The Red Devils were 6-5 and 4-2 in the Valle Vista and only lost 24-7 to eventual champion Monrovia in the first round of the playoffs in 2012. But even if you thought they would improve, who thought they would be unbeaten through six games and might possibly stay that way until facing San Dimas in Week 10?
4. Rosemead (5-1) — The Panthers stunk in the first year without coach Matt Koffler, going 4-6 and missing the playoffs. A year later, they look like serious Mission Valley League contenders and are ranked 10th in the Mid-Valley poll.
5. Baldwin Park (5-1) — Even though the Braves were crushed last week against San Dimas, they were undefeated the first five weeks after going 0-10 last year. Again, the only direction they could go was up, but nobody thought they would be unbeaten halfway through the season. Another team you could have put on this list was Bassett, 3-3 overall but a perfect 3-0 in the Montview.

BIGGEST DISAPPOINTMENTS
1. West Covina (3-4)— The Bulldogs compete for championships, that’s the bar they raised by winning back-to-back titles in 2010 and ’11. But things have unraveled, they’re 3-4 and in danger of missing the playoffs. It didn’t help that Antonio Noodles Hull transferred to Diamond Bar, but as much as they’re struggling, would he have made that much of a difference anyway?
2. El Monte (1-5) — One year after its greatest season since 1979 and player of the year Brandon Martinez, who led them to an 8-4 record and league title, the Eagles are having one of the worst years in the Valley at 1-5 with a strong possibility of finishing 1-9.
3. Rowland (2-5) — A season ago the Raiders tied for the Hacienda League title and usually are contenders for a playoff spot. But they’ve fallen off the map, losing five straight, including a loss to Walnut, dropping it to last in the Hacienda. They probably won’t win another game, finishing 2-8, something you haven’t seen in a while.
4. Damien (2-4) — I know the Spartans played a tough schedule, but I thought coach Mark Paredes’ arrival would be similar to the arrival of Amat coach Steve Hagerty when he guided the Lancers to a 7-4 record and playoff berth in his first season. And I certainly didn’t expect them to get blown out the way they did against Charter Oak last week. Now I have serious doubts they make the playoffs.
5. Charter Oak (2-4) — You have to put them on this list because they started 0-4 for the first time in more than two decades. There are always expectations at Charter Oak. But I’ll give them this, they’ve won two straight and unlike the other teams in the disappointment section, they have a great chance to still turn it around. The others, I’m not so sure.
