Tribskin Pick’em Predictions: Pomona will shock San Dimas; Arroyo knocks out Rosemead and Azusa ends Bassett’s title hopes

Aram Tolegian and I will go head-to-head picking football games throughout the season. He edged me out the past two seasons, but it’s not happening this year, not when we’re playing for a Slater’s 50-50 burger.

Aram Tolegian (13-4, last week); (139-56, season total)
Fred Robledo (12-5, last week); (140-55, season total)

colmenero

Last Week: Aram picked up another game and so I’ve got a one-game lead heading into Week 10. We both missed taking Los Altos over Bonita, Bishop Amat over Crespi and Damien over South Hills. Aram missed his fourth taking Glendora over Los Osos, but he picked up one because I missed taking Gladstone over Ganesha and Bassett over Duarte for five losses total.

This Week: In the Valle Vista, San Dimas has won by a margin of 41 points and Pomona by 30 points. The Red Devils, however, are a perfect 9-0 and though it played a much softer pre-season schedule, my guess is they’ve been waiting for this opportunity far too long and will finally knock San Dimas off its perch on Friday. Bassett had a terrible fourth quarter against Duarte and figures to give Azusa a tough game for the Montview league title. But the Aztecs have handled the Montview better and at home, I expect them to close it out. Arroyo hasn’t lost since the season opener to Los Altos and is trying to secure the No. 2 seed in the Mid-Valley Division. But Rosemead has been tough as nails. It figures to be a classic MVL showdown for the title, but Arroyo will be just a little better. In other games, I expect South Hills to clinch a playoff berth with a win at Ayala. In the Hacienda I never thought anyone would go unbeaten and still feel that way so I’m taking Bonita over Diamond Ranch, especially after the way it handled Los Altos. I also expect Los Altos to bounce back and beat West Covina. Diamond Bar should close out Walnut on Friday and regardless of what happens, I expect Diamond Bar to at least get a wild-card berth if it doesn’t finish top three in league. I’m taking Amat in the league finale against Loyola, but their season in all likelihood ends unless you believe CIF is giving the Serra league both at-large berths, which would be the stunner of all stunners.

Fred, how do you see the playoffs shaping up among your top 5 or 10? Of course we have no idea, so I’m perfectly comfortable with guesses. :-)

    • FredJ

Charter Oak, Chino Hills won’t go far at all in the Inland. Maybe they win one game. Amat and Glendora are basically eliminated. Teams with best chance of actually winning titles are in the Mid-Valley, Pomona, San Dimas, Arroyo .. In the Southeast I believe the Hacienda will get at least one team to the semifinals.

      • reality

How do you pick Bohi over Diamond Ranch?. is it just a gut feeling? Most folks give Diamond Ranch a two or three touchdown edge playing at home. It certainly is not based on common opponent results.

        • FredJ

It’s a feeling, they played extremely well last week and Diamond Ranch already has clinched No. 1 in Hacienda — they have less to play for.

          • Conq ’76

Do you think it is important to know if a team is playing with a depleted starting line up when making your picks? Several of us are wondering what is happening with LA’s roster but we have heard nothing from you or Aram about this story. Care to enlighten us?

          • SGVSports

Why is it their job to monitor all the programs in the area and give you medical updates. The LA QB could be out for the rest of the season, elbow problems. The starting QB’s running game is what Los Altos was missing in the Bonita game. He obviously is a better passer than the junior qb, but only average at that.

More interesting what is going to happen to LA, DR, and WC when Charter Oak moves to the Hacienda league next year. Heard that South Hills is moving down also. If that is the case wow! That league and division is in trouble.

          • Conq ’76

You’re right, why would I think a reporter who covers area High School football programs and attempts to pick winners each week, would bother to report, (ie. act in the capacity of a reporter), circumstances that may have a huge bearing on the outcome of an important game with grave playoff consequences? Don’t know what I was thinking…lol

          • SGVSports

Conq ’76, your right Fred and Aram should be making the 36 calls each week (haha)

Just to show you how clueless you really are, maybe LA didn’t want Bonita to know.

          • Conq ’76

Yet, somehow, if there is a hint Scoby may be transferring to another school, somehow they have information from every corner of the SGV. I have to imagine, if Amat’s QB was going to miss a game for one reason or another, that info would some how find its way into this little slice of the blogosphere… but that’s just me…

          • GP AKA Green Machine

However, the need that number two seed..

        • OuttaYourMindTrib

Dirty Ranch couldn’t put Ayala away.

        • PatrickHT

I could see it happening on any given night!

      • GP AKA Green Machine

Fred….none of these teams are beating Monrovia…

        • FredJ

San Marino is beating them this week

          • GP AKA Green Machine

            Haha…why Fred?

          • FredJ

More of a gut feeling. Everyone has been saying how great Monrovia is and how easy it will be for them to win the Mid-Valley again. Meanwhile, San Marino is a 3-point loss to CV from an undefeated season and beating RHL team with almost the same ferociousness as Monrovia. Plus, San Marino’s at home and averages almost 270 yards rushing a game. I have the feeling they will be able to run the ball all night and use clock. I could be completely wrong, but something tells me this is the year YOU’LL REMEMBER THE TITANS.

          • Not So Fast My Friend

            LOL!

          • GP AKA Green Machine

Haha…Denzel Robledo…Fred, What about the South Pas game…was that just a fart? San Marino, will not be able to run the ball all night, because they will be playing from Behind for most of the evening…They are not battle tested like the Cats. Not that preseason matters, but do you think SM can beat SH Ayala or SD? You don’t have an official west side pick, so I know you are just stirring up the pot….lol. You don’t think Monrovia is going to be able to run the Ball all night? You better check your gut for irritable bowel syndrome. I think that’s the feeling you are getting….

          • Not So Fast My Friend

LOL. Fred you should have known Greenie was going to be all over that! LOL.

          • GP AKA Green Machine

LOL…Fred’s a Joker…He does not think SM will win.

          • Dustin ohara

No way monrovia will win this game

          • GP AKA Green Machine

lol…There are plenty of ways Monrovia will win this game…I think you have dyslexia. I know what you meant to say

          • Dustin ohara

I mean no way to Fred monrovia will win this game

          • GP AKA Green Machine

LOL..SM is not on that level. You will see, then you will see again if we play the devils in the playoffs….

          • Dustin ohara

I’m a fan in general more so for monrovia as my bro played for them in 90s I’m glad they have had all this success and sure. They can keep it up Potts scooby great 1 2 punch and solid defense it will be good game if they play Pomona

          • GP AKA Green Machine

            I know your brothers…Both of them….How’s JP?

Monrovia has a 3rd punch coming Friday night….You will see.

          • Dustin ohara

            JP is good doing accupuncture

          • GP AKA Green Machine

What lol…he was a gritty WR back in our day…He had great hands…

WOW, going out on a thin limb there Fred !!!

  • SirRedDevil

ALL THIS TALK ABOUT SAN DIMAS STRENGTH OF SCHEDULE VS. POMONA’S STRENGTH OF SCHEDULE LAST TIME I CHECKED SAN DIMAS WENT 0-4 AGAINST THOSE “DOMINANT” OPPONENTS SO IF SAN DIMAS IS GETTING PRAISE FOR GETTING THEIR BUTS KICKED IN NON-LEAGUE THEN IDK WHAT ELSE TO SAY…SMH

    • FredJ

I agree, why should strength of schedule be an advantage if you lose all four games?

      • SirRedDevil

My point exactly Fred it makes no sense to mention Strength of Schedule if you lose ALL four games Give POMONA the same schedule trust there would be a much different outcome.

        • TruTH

          Calpreps Prediction
          Pomona 21 Bonita 35
          Pomona 21 Los Altos 35
          Pomona 21 Diamond Bar 35
          Pomona 19 Monrovia 35

          • SGVSports

Check you numbers out, validates Pomona is the better team.

          • Saint Parent

You mean these numbers. The ones you so conveniently left out. You are getting a taste of victory and you’re not handling it well. Don’t puff your chest out just yet. Win Friday and you can “I told you so” all you want, until then slow down.

Calpreps prediction SD 31 PHS 28

SD vs PHS. League PF/PA SD 262-55 PHS 223-67.

Thats SD 52.4-11 per game versus PHS 44.6-13.4

Cal preps rating SD 15-PHS 13.1.

Maxpreps strength of schedule SD 5.1 PHS minus 15.

          • SGVSports

The majority of these comments are valid from both sides. Saint Parent the numbers are numbers both ways. As someone pointed out the big advantage San Dimas has is in coaching. If not mistaken this Pomona coach has never even been a DC or OC at the varsity level (maybe any level). The kid (coach) is doing an excellent job and works very hard at it. He is a coach that knows he needs to learn and in the SGV that is a huge advantage in the long run. I want Pomona to win, but wouldn’t be surprise either way. I could also see either team blowing out the other by 3 or 4 touchdowns. Pomona stops the Wing-T and San Dimas stops the spread and speed.

Saints Parent – “”the spread we face on Friday night will not be Bonita, Los Altos or Diamond Bar. That is as much of a fact.”

I have watched every team you listed live and you are right it isn’t the same. It is younger (more mistakes) and it is faster team. They have the speed at RB that Bonita has (multi not as powerful), they are faster than all those teams at the QB position. They are faster and have better hands than all those teams except (Snoop’s kid on Diamond Bar). That all being said they are also smaller than all those teams.

If San Dimas can put that type of pressure on the Pomona’s OL it could be a long night (Pomona). They don’t contain it could be a long night (San Dimas), they aren’t catching these Pomona kids.

            .

        • SGVSports

I believe strength of schedule even if they lose all four can be an advantage. From Pomona’s side of the ball that would have been a disservice. This Pomona team is very young. They have grown as a team very nicely throughout the season.

If San Dimas plays like they played against Los Altos Pomona putting up 60 on them.

San Dimas has only proven that they have a tough time against teams with speed and that run the spread. This game isn’t a good match up for the much slower and less talented San Dimas team.

The key to the game – Pomona’s defense slowing down the Wing-T. How good of a job will be reflected directly in the score. How many mistakes will the much younger Pomona team make. Pomona’s coach is very young and very inexperience. How well will he have his kids coached up against the Wing-T.

          • Not So Fast My Friend

Argh! The offense I despise the most, the Wing T.

If he coaches his players smart, i.e. stay home, fill the gaps and stuff the run with the intent of stopping the RB on first contact, and watch for TE’s breaking loose on dump routes, or occasional deep ones, they should be fine. Not a tall order, but a more focused one.

Wing T is all deception and inside running. If they can contain them and that “daggum” offense, then they should be fine.

if not, then SD will slowly grind out a win, by speeding up the clock.

            I hate that offense.

          • AMAT 73

            NSFMF,
A diciplined defense is what is needed to stop the wing T . As you say on the line fight your block at home and play your gap and fill the hole . The key is to force SD out of that offense by stuffing it and see what they can do thru the air .

          • Not So Fast My Friend

Exactly! They stop that run, that forces them to pass. Anyone and everyone knows a team that runs the Wing T is very good passing.

Toss in Pomona’s speed, I’m taking Pomona.

Pomona can do they’re own version of ball control by measuring the tempo of their play calling. But they have to score. They don’t and they won’t see the ball again for awhile.

          • Saints Parent

Much younger Pomona team? You need to check who is really on the field for SD defensively for sure. The bulk of that defense is seeing their first year in the Varsity spotlight and most will return next year. They are just as young Defensively as Pomona is. On offense, they return most yah I will give you that is true.

        • GP AKA Green Machine

All that matters is who is better Friday night. Pomona, is at a coaching disadvantage. I am not saying the Pomona Coach is not a good coach. He is. I am just saying that it’s going to come down to missed extra point..or missed 2pt conversion by the devils…

        • Saints Parent

OK, so I will throw out the SOS stuff, fair enough. But I will base my opinion, just that, off of now watching film on Pomona the last 3 games. Since in my opinion, that is most relevant as all of you have stated since the “new young QB” has been running the offense. I know for FACT, Freddie hasn’t seen Pomona (right?) and I will guarantee SGV Sports down below that SD WILL NOT be playing in a fashion similar to the Los Altos game… anyone who spends 10 mins watching film would see that the Defense that will be on the field Friday night is the polar opposite of the one on the field Games #1-3. First, I said it before and I will say it again, this game will be won or LOST based on who wins the battle of the Trenches — the SD Defensive front vs the Pomona OLine. This young QB has faced Baldwin Park, Wilson and Nogales. He looks very agile and moves extremely well. But the defensive fronts he has faced the last 3 weeks are, uuum, well, not very good. If SD Dline and Defensive Ends get after him as they have the last 5 games, he will be in unchartered territory for him as a Starter. While Pomona looks to have more overall team speed than SD, we ain’t running a track meet. If the QB has 5 sec’s to run around back there, yep, it will be a problem. But if he is staring at 3-4 dudes in his face right off the snap, different story. Your speed does not look to be up front in the “hogs”. I think our DE’s are too quick for your guy’s to pick up. If we contain Lockett from taking off outside and keep him from being able to sit back and wait for the WR to free up, then our LB’s need to step up and recognize quickly. In those 3 games , I saw dozens and dozens of missed tackles that won’t happen on Friday.
Again, I think it will be a great and hard fought game Friday night. And SirRedDevil you are quite correct, the SOS of SD’s earlier season may not be relevant because we lost… yep, that is right, I am here to give you that. But one thing we will take into consideration, the spread we face on Friday night will not be Bonita, Los Altos or Diamond Bar. That is as much of a fact.

          • FredJ

Interesting that “Parents” get to watch multiple film of their opponents, lol.

          • FredJ

Bottom line, both teams are fired up and have penciled this game since league started. I’m going with the hungrier of the two, Pomona … If they played 10 times I’d probably pick San Dimas 6-4 or 7-3. But this one game — for 10-0 — I like Pomona.

          • Not So Fast My Friend

I like Pomona in the win as well. No need to drill down to smallest of reasons why, but team speed plays a big part in it.

If i run the corners, take my shots with a few inside runs and keep the ball moving quickly in the air, that front four of SD is going to get winded chasing Pomona’s very “agile” QB. That’s just physics. Besides Pomona’s confidence is sky high right now and if they can keep from getting frustrated with that abomination of an offense, the Wing T (lol), they should walk away with the win.

        • FredJ

Well you couldn’t do any worse. That’s the point. You could have scheduled Mater Dei, Orange Lutheran, Servite and Amat and been 5-4 — just like Dimas.

  • LA Futbol
