Tribskin Pick’em: CIF first-round predictions, got Charter Oak, Diamond Bar, Azusa winning; West Covina, Pomona, South Hills going down

Aram Tolegian and I will go head-to-head picking football games throughout the season. He edged me out the past two seasons, but it’s not happening this year, not when we’re playing for a Slater’s 50-50 burger.

Aram Tolegian (16-2, last week); (155-58, season total)
Fred Robledo (15-3, last week); (155-58, season total)

boysindahoodLast Week: Aram picked up a game and we’re dead even heading into the playoffs. Aram and I split on Hacienda games. I won taking Los Altos over West Covina but he got one back taking Diamond Ranch over Bonita. We both lost taking Chino Hills over Damien, but Aram picked up one on me taking San Dimas over Pomona.

This Weeks: We’ll pick every game in each of the four divisions and in the next two days, I’ll make my predictions for each bracket.

Aztec pride, just curious what did you think of Bassett?

How can you not feel bad for Bassett! They win at home, they’re co-league champs with AZUSA and go into the CIF playoffs that every football teams works hard for! For a title game you couldn’t have had a better game then that! Bassett driving with minutes on the drive but throws an interception at the end! For Bassetts season to end like that has to be heartbreaking and especially not going to the playoffs! Always good to hear about a school who’s football program makes a great comeback after many years of being the worst team in the league and I don’t mean NO disrespect! A season like Bassett had excites the entire school, players, coaches and the entire City rally’s around the team! Tough loss but keep your heads up and seems this program is back, like what they did in 2002! Congratulations on a great season Bassett!

        • Conq ’76

I’m confused, they are co-league champs but do not get to go to a play-off game?

          • DDTS

No, they were playing for the ship. And were one bad holding call from driving in for game winning score. Azusa champs.

          • Think again

Instead of scoring and winning the game and forcing a 2 way tie for 1st place with Azusa, they ended up in a 3 way tie for 2nd place and lost out on the tie breakers to make the playoffs.

  • Not So Fast My Friend

    Here’s my Inland Bracket breakdown.

Los Osos vs Vista Murrieta – if this was a season where VM looked vulnerable, this would be it. They can be beat, but it won’t be by Los Osos. VM by 3 TDs (or more).

Charter Oak vs Yucaipa – the resurgence of the Chargers continues, but ends the following week against VM. The Chargers don’t have the horses VM does, but they do over Yucaipa. CO over Yuc by 2 TDs.

Rancho Cucamonga vs REV – if RC had beat Upland, I’d be more confident. If they can stop REVs almost 200 yard average on the ground, athlete per athlete I like their chances. RC will have to strike quickly and often with few turnovers. Which means Pucci can’t throw ints. RC over REV by a TD.

Norco vs Great Oak – Norco is a machine with or without Coach G. They’re averaging almost 340 yards a game on the ground and that’s a clock eater. It also tells GO where the work gets done at. GO will have no answer for that. Somewhere Chuck Knox is smiling. Norco by two TDs.

Upland vs South Hills – I like South Hills. Not to win of course. Their coach has done a great job with the talent he has. It just won’t show here. I actually believe Damien would have been a better bet at this spot. Their defense could have kept it interesting. But it doesn’t matter. The team with 29 different player zip codes wins big. Upland by 3 TDs or more.

Eisenhower vs Santiago – Eisenhower is everyone’s feel good story. A program in disarray a few years go, walking tall now. However, I like The Sharks here. They’ve played a tougher schedule and that has to count for something. That grit gets them the win. Santiago by 10.

Chaparral vs Chino Hills – if CH hadn’t laid an egg at Damien, I’d be more confident. But having seen film of Chaparral earlier in the season, I’m not sure Chap goes into this game too high in the air. CHs offense will have to score and score a lot because their defense couldn’t stop a bunch a 3 year olds. Its not cause of the scheme, its a matter of desire. They need to get off the snide here cause Goliath waits for whomever. CH by a TD.

Centennial vs Etiwanda – this doesn’t require saying anything more than CCs seconds/thirds will be playing midway thru the third quarter. CC by a lot of TDs.

    • inland_1

I would say for the most part your assessments are spot on, however I’m not sure where VM looks more vulnerable this season, they are 6-1 vs teams that made the playoffs and outscored them 341-107.
I think the Yucaipa / CO game is going to be a lot closer then that Yucaipa has seen big physical athletic teams all season, so CO brings nothing new.
Rancho should get this one, depends on where their heads are after last weeks mental no show against Upland.
Norco is firing on all cylinders now and they will give VM a game in the semi’s.
South Hills stays close for a half, then Upland runs away with it.
Ike is the feel good story for sure, and you have to wonder about Santiago’s mental / physical state after the beatings they took the last 2 weeks.
I got Chaparral in this one.
Etiwanda going to shock the world, yeah right.

      • Not So Fast My Friend

Being a Centennial man, I have some obvious bias in judging VM. So I went with the numbers. Although, as you pointed out, they’ve beat their opponents by a wide margin, the winning percentage of those they’ve played against, which include Yucaipa, REV, Crespi, Murrieta Valley and Chaparral, is 5.6%. Ours, on the other hand, is 6.2%. Ours includes St. Bonnie, Long Beach Poly (L), Alemany (L), Norco and Liberty.

Of course, the game is played on the field and since Su’a Cravens is at USC now, well. Lol

  • GP AKA Green Machine

Fred, you really want to see noodles don’t ya…With noodles Dbar would have a real good chance, Without noodles it’s no dice…Peterson and Reyna, cancel out…Dbar has better WR, but Huff, and that running game is what gives Downey the edge. Noodles also would have been a huge factor on Defense and special teams…However, if they pull this off…Seeing him suit up would be amazing!

Coak, is not out the woods in this first round game. They have won the league with a few close wins, but they are not the CO of old loaded. They may win this one but it’s going to be close. After struggling with Ayala in week 10, you have to think Yuciapa is at least as good as Ayala. Playing at home is huge in this one.

Mayfair will beat Burbank. The Pacific was very weak this year That’s why Muir got LM, you are going to have to earn it in the Southeast. I also think LM beats Muir…They went toe to toe with Norwalk…so I think that’s worth one TD better than Muir. I agree Norwalk is fools gold.

I also think The U has to watch themselves…They are way more talented than South Hills, but they were more talented than Glendora too! South hills is a tough team, and if they block for Goss, he could have a big night and grind the U in a close one…

Los Altos is going to be Tested, and think Paramount’s size could be a problem. The only thing is that Paramount can’t close out a game…This one could go either way.

    • Not So Fast My Friend

My concern about South Hills is Goss is their biggest weapon. SH has other athletes that can make plays, but not in the volume Upland does. SH’s defense isn’t tough enough. I think Damien had the better defense between the two. I don’t see SH being able to keep it close by grinding it out on the ground, but that’s their better option cause to try and compete by air only invites Jones, Farrar, and the rest of Upland’s DB unit to get ints. Why? Because I don’t think the skill set of SHs WR core is very good.

      • GP AKA Green Machine

Well Upland is going to have to beat them…They won’t quit.

        • Not So Fast My Friend

Lol. I don’t expect them to quit Greenie. I expect them to compete hard, I expect them to be coached well and prepared to play. Otherwise they wouldn’t have made the playoffs. 🙂

          • GP AKA Green Machine

I am just saying Upland is not blowing teams out….

    • OuttaYourMindTrib

Calpreps projection of Ayala vs. Yucaipa; 21-14 Yucaipa.

So, if and I do mean IF C-No gets by Yucaipa, it’s going to be by a FG, or two maybe. C-No only beat Ayala by a TD.

      • GP AKA Green Machine

yeah…I know, but they are picking ’em… I just don’t think it is a shoe in.

        • New York

CO defends home court and reps the SGV. Yucaipa has always been a baseball school…Big Lou is a football coach.

          • OuttaYourMindTrib

C-No better put up more than 14 like they did against Ayala or it’s lights out in the first round.

          • GP AKA Green Machine

Doesn’t mean, the game is going to be a blow out lol. You use to swing the Bat with Power…

    • PatrickHT

So much for Downey’s edge in the running game! LOL

  • Not Since 1995

Who is Bishop NoMAS playing this week…?
    – Lakewood?
    – Servite?
    – Long Beach Poly?
    – Tesoro?

BTW, the PAC 5 is so weak this year…even Long Beach Cabrillo made the playoffs…! That hasn’t happened since 1995…! Funny…Not Since 1995…!

    Heh…heh! Heh…heh! Heh…heh! I kill myself…LOL!

    Not in 2013 either…

    • AMAT 73

Can you spell or say coin flip ??? Coin flip for your puppies to get in to the playoffs , hahahahahaha Well what you got to say now about coin flips .
Not in 2012 or 2013 either , hahahahahahaha

  • GrimReaper

Rosemead at Pomona, 7 p.m. — Robledo (Rosemead); Aram (Paramomead)

Fred is Aram hedging his bets or has he gone completely off the reservation?

    Has Rosemead gone paranormal?

Or is Pomona selling mead wine to the parochial schools now?

Or did Aram send you his predictions after visiting and dispensary to get his errr….Medicine?

    • AramT

You can’t be that stupid. Eh, maybe you actually are. Yeah okay, you are. That explains it.

      • GrimReaper

read your prediction above… or should I amend my comment to say Fred cant type?

  • Saints Parent

Freddie J can you do us a favor and Pick Against us EVERY Week, we seem to do better when that happens….. I’ll cover your Slaters 50-50 bill with Aram

  • what ever happened to ATs all time coach gg the michelin man…out of coaching again I see…his “time” has come and gone……what a terrible job he did at Damien ! square peg in a round hole…I could see that train wreck(failure) from day one !

    • Inland_FB_Fan

Yep…He also got run out of OC in 5 games. The dude has let the game pass him by

      • The stands

Someone posted a while back that Gano might be headed to Wilson. Has anyone heard the same? I also heard he used to coach there. I’m not born and raise in this area so I wouldn’t know. It would be interesting if Gano returned; couldn’ t hurt Wilson.

        • SGVSports

Here is a little history on the Wilson/Gano situation. When
Gano stepped down over at Damien, one of the first places he went was Wilson.
Ms. Paul (Principal at the time) meet with her staff and they voted on hiring
Gano as the new head coach at Wilson. The majority of the staff voted “No”.
Mark Fessenden and Willie Allen the two current AD’s (sharing the position and
money) voted “NO”. Sweet the VP at the time voted “Yes”. The reason why
Fessenden and Allen voted no were purely selfish reasons. They both realized
that if Gano gets the head coach position he would also be the new AD.

Currently don’t have as much solid detail but will give you
what I do have. Gano was seen going into the HLPUSD district administration
office days after he was let go at Tustin. Wilson school administration has
been asked about Gano coming to Wilson; they haven’t come right out and confirmed,
but have implied that it is a very strong possibility. No official word but the
rumor mill over at Wilson was that they are waiting for the end of the season
          to address this issue, publicly.

Would Gano be able to turn around the Wilson program? This
would be a great situation for Gano and Wilson, with Gano’s special coaching talents
(haha) playing in the VVL. Wilson gets a few quality transfers and they are
competing with San Dimas. I would project after a couple years Wilson would be
dominating that league. Now on the other side of Hacienda, Los Altos would have
a major hit on their recruiting. Don’t forget next year Charter Oak and South
Hills are moving down to the Hacienda. That is going to leave DR, LA and WC
fighting it out for the last playoff spot. In league Los Altos will have zero
chance of winning a league title every year. How easy is that going to be for
Gano and staff to get quality local players to transfer/go to Wilson.

The key is does the Wilson’s “NEW” administration want the
football program to win? The old administration staff just wanted the old coaching
staffs to stay out of trouble. If this administration wants to see a winning
program, they will hire Gano. The VVL and Los Altos will be campaigning hard to
          make sure that doesn’t happen.

          • Reality

Go crawl under a rock already. Are you still transferring your son around because he can’t beat out anybody to play QB (not even in popwarner). Enough of your insight you are a joke!!!

  • New York

I am taking West Covina over Norwalk. Norwalk’s schedule leaves a lot to be desired AND they were 8-3 in 2012 and 3-8 2011. While that certainly demonstrates progress, it also means no one on the team has experienced winning a playoff game. Fred might not think that is relevant (picking Pomona over San Dimas), but I do! If anyone believes in an “X” factor, then this is the time when Coach M leads WestCo to victory.
The side story, is that somehow Norwalk made the playoffs with a 3-7 record in 2011 and faced West Covina in the first round. Same head coach…

    • GP AKA Green Machine

I agree, they run a similar offense. This is their kind of game. The team has some small passing wrinkles added to their play calling is going to win this one. West Co has to get Jone and Love the ball on the perimeter. Norwalk is the Penny show…Stop Penny, you stop Norwalk. They will Draw upon the Dranch game, and not turn the Ball over in this one.
      West Co 21 Norwalk 20

  • SF priorities?

Sad to see the freefall Santa Fe has been on, the quarterback factor clearly has taken a bad turn. The success to a good team is we not me. That plus the Gabby factor has created a different set of priorities for the Lara family. #7 is just 16, let hope his support system makes me see the “light” and he becomes more focused on his teams success rather then his own stats. Its not too late.
