Charter Oak 53, Yucaipa 33: Not that Charter Oak’s 53-33 victory over visiting Yucaipa in the first round of the CIF-Southern Section Inland Division playoffs Friday is going to make state power and top-seeded Vista Murrieta shake in its boots, but it was the Chargers’ seventh consecutive victory after nearly squandering a big fourth-quarter lead.
San Dimas 48, Gabrielino 6: Host San Dimas defeated Gabrielino 48-6 in the first round of the CIF-SS Mid Valley Division playoffs Friday night. The win gave San Dimas coach Bill Zernickow his 100th career win.The Saints dominated early and led 48-3 at halftime to force a running clock in the second half.
Norwalk 42, West Covina 27: West Covina could not have imagined getting off to a better start, but in the end it was ability of Rashaad Penny as a receiver that made all the difference as Norwalk came from behind to win 42-27 in the first round of the CIF-SS Southeast Division playoffs on Friday.
Upland 21, South Hills 14: After earning a share of the Baseline League title with a victory over Rancho Cucamonga last week, Upland mustered enough grit to get past West Covina South Hills, 21-14, in the first round of the CIF-SS Inland Division playoffs Friday night.
Arroyo 56, Baldwin Park 53: Those were sighs of relief coming from the Arroyo High School sideline rather than sounds of celebration. The second-seeded Knights (10-1) had to come from behind in the fourth quarter and then hung on for a 56-53 win over at-large selection Baldwin Park in a wild CIF-Southern Section Mid-Valley Division first-round playoff game.
Duarte 27, Maranatha 17: Duarte used a swarming defense to keep Maranatha’s outstanding offense in check, allowing the Falcons to advance to the second round of the CIF-SS Northwest Division playoffs with a 27-17 road win Friday night.
Diamond Bar 63, Downey 29: Downey High’s reign as CIF-SS Southeast Division kingpin ended abruptly Friday night. The host Vikings were ousted from the playoffs in decisive fashion as visiting Diamond Bar stormed to a 63-29 victory.
