Monrovia at Paraclete, Friday’s Weather Forecast Hi 53, Low 39 with chance of rain .. Tribskin Pick’em semifinals

STORY: “They have to play in the same weather we do,” Monrovia coach Ryan Maddox said. “They’re probably a little more used to the cold weather. I was talking to (Paraclete head coach) Norm (Dahlia) and their kids don’t like freezing-cold weather. They might play in it more than we do, but it’s not like they’re hyped up for it to be freezing cold.”

That’s Lancaster, I can’t look at this schedule and not wonder what it will be like for Monrovia at Paraclete this week. Even snow isn’t out of the equation. I’ll bet Paraclete keeps this one at 7:30, just to make sure its a tad cooler. Now the big question for us, who’s gonna cover this sucker? Steve, Aram, Keith, any suggestions? And what are your thoughts on the other semifinal games? My Muir-La Serna prediction and San Dimas-Monrovia finals call is right on track.

TRIBSKIN PICK’EM: Aram Tolegian and I will go head-to-head picking football games throughout the season. He edged me out the past two seasons, but it’s not happening this year, not when we’re playing for a Slater’s 50-50 burger.

Aram Tolegian (11-5, last week); (186-75, season total)
Fred Robledo (15-1, last week); (193-68, season total)

Last Week: I’ve blown this open over the last two week and now lead by seven over the football expert. I went 15-1 in the second round, my only loss taking Rancho Cucamonga over Norco. Aram also lost that game plus he also lost taking Dominguez over Norwalk, Diamond Bar over La Serna, Carpinteria over El Segundo, Santa Fe over Burbank.

This week: Sticking with my pre-playoff predictions in the Mid-Valley and Southeast .. I like San Dimas facing Monrovia and if it happens, San Dimas gets the championship game at home. I’ve still got Muir meeting La Serna in the championship, nothing’s changed. I’m going on a limb and taking St. Francis over power Serra and Rio Hondo Prep over Salesian.

Friday’s Semifinals
Mid-Valley

Monrovia at Paraclete, 7:30 p.m. — Robledo (Monrovia); Aram (M-Town)

Burbank vs. La Serna at Cal Hi, 7:30 — Robledo (La Serna); Aram (Frankie Football)
Norwalk at Muir, 7:30 p.m. — Robledo (Muir); Aram (Muir)
Western Division
Serra at St. Francis, 7:30 p.m. — Robledo (St. Francis); Aram (Serra)
Lompoc at Chaminade, 7:30 p.m. — Robledo (Chaminade); Aram (Chaminade)

Rio Hondo Prep at Salesian, 7:30 p.m. — Robledo (RH Prep); Aram (Salesian)
Desert at Mission Prep, 7:30 p.m. — Robledo (Mission Prep); Aram (MP)

    Lmao, that pic is hilarious!

It is what it is. Article like this feed into perceptions from the Northeast and Midwest that Cali is soft! I know otherwise, but you can’t blame the good folks who don’t flinch at the thought of playing in snow once November and December roll around.
That said, 19 degrees is pretty cold. The boys need to get warmed up and stay warm through moving around, doing jumping jacks and high knees, etc.
Sure, both teams have to deal with it. The human body is the human body. We all need the same warmth. The real difference is psychological! Which team will laugh it off and own the situation best! Paraclete deals with it daily. Monrovia knows they just need to do it this once!
Monrovia can make history for an SGV to go up and win in the cold. Amat was downed by Antelope Valley in 1993. Rosemead was downed by Paraclete in 2008.

    • FredJ

Well said New York, looks like a 30 percent chance of rain/snow too

    • Steve Ramirez

Monrovia’s built for cold weather — Great OL and pound and ground with Kurt Scoby.

As for the the 1993 Amat team. The weather had nothing to do with it. QB James Free was the weak link and it showed.

Saints Parent, you’re absolutely right, Hope to see you guys in 2 weeks. Let’s not look past the other contenders because this is the Semi’s and everyone will show up hopefully with their A game…. Looks like next weekend will not have any rain in the forecast.

          ARROYO, ARROYO, ARROYO…….

      • GP AKA Green Machine

Monrovia wants to win Friday and win at Citrus next Friday! I hope it’s not at SD high school. The Field is nice, but the home side is small…we wouldn’t want any San Dimas Fans sitting on our side…But wait…we still have to beat the Clete in the post Thanksgiving Blizzard.

        • Jet sweep

Sorry it won’t be at citrus. It’s at the halo.

          • New York

It is funny seeing “Clete/Arroyo.” What are the odds that would be the matchup? More likely Clete-SD than Clete-Arroyo.

          • saints Fan

OOOH Man, that didn’t come out right…. I was more poking fun that Monrovia & San Dimas we need to focus on Clete / Arroyo…. not on US facing each other…. OHHHHH dang…

How is Jake Peyton feeling right about now???

          • New York

His original choice of Upland looks pretty good.

          • saints Fan

You know, I wasn’t going to touch this, but I know it is going to come out anyway. Jake is a really good kid. They Lyons “had” the right intentions in their heart and always will for Jake. Problem was they listened to the wrong people who today, don’t care about Jake just what he could have done for their name and them. Unfortunately emotions got the better of the both of them when they looked like they were going to get smacked and lose a season, so they lashed out. We have all done this. I as a Parent on this team have a sad spot in my heart this week. Jake Payton should be dressed in Blue and Gold in his Senior Season battling to win a CIF Championship. I am sure he feels like crap. Kids are going to talk smack to him regardless of whether we win or lose. No disrespect for Mayorga he has had a great season in this “system” and has taken advantage of the opportunity. But the SD Saints have shown they will battle with the brothers on the field with them. I know for a fact, there are a few who wish Jake was going to be there Friday night to try and climb the mountain. But he is not, and they will battle with who they have and who has helped them climb this mountain this year.

          • Saint Parent

Not the Halo it’s apparently nicknamed “the Shark Tank”. I guess because their track is blue and one if their defensive calls is shark. I like it!!!

      • Mean Joe Green

As I stated in another thread, home field is irrelevant to Monrovia. The scoring margins of their victories is greater when they are away (49.8) than it is when they are at home (31.8). San Dimas needs to be jumping for joy, because they have only played 3 away games (6 home) since their winning streak. I don’t think home field will be a factor in that hypothetical situation. However, San Dimas clearly benefits more from the toss.

    • GP AKA Green Machine

36 is still cold….the wind chill should make it feel like 25 or so…

      • Here’s JOHNNY, or Little Johnn

The weather will only be a factor for the bone heads in the stands… The kids worked hard all year for this and they are not going to let a little cold weather get in the way…

An update on the Santiago player injured against Upland.

Jordan Walker, a junior football player at Santiago High School in Corona, remains in critical condition at Loma Linda University Medical Center after suffering trauma to his spinal cord during a game Friday, Nov. 22.

Santiago Athletic Director Steve Mitchell said Walker underwent surgery Saturday to repair a displaced vertebra. Mitchell said he was unaware If Walker had regained feeling in all his extremities, but he did say Walker was taken off a ventilator Sunday morning and was able to breathe without any assistance.

Mitchell said he had been authorized by Walker’s parents to provided information and updates.

Briana Pastorino, a media spokesperson at Loma Linda University Medical Center, said Walker’s condition was critical Saturday and had not been upgraded by Sunday evening.

Walker was injured late in the first quarter of Santiago’s quarterfinal playoff game against Upland High School. Walker, a linebacker, was charging forward and attempting to tackle Upland running back Nathan Tilford.

After the play ended, Walker lie motionless on the ground. He was first attended to by Santiago athletic trainer Rikki Watson. An ambulance was present on the scene, a requirement for all CIF-Southern Section playoff games. Emergency medical technicians then treated Walker, who was taken from the stadium in the ambulance.

Walker initially was taken to Riverside Community Hospital, Mitchell said. However, he was transported to Loma Linda University Medical Center when it was determined he had suffered a possible spinal cord injury.

Walker appeared in seven games this season, averaging five tackles a game and registering one interception.

“He’s a beloved young man on campus and on the field,” Mitchell said. “He has a huge support system here.”

A few hundred people — including family, friends, coaches, teachers and teammates — showed up at Santiago’s football field Saturday for a prayer service. The group formed a circle around the midfield logo.

“We got some good news during the service, so the mood there was one of optimism and hope,” Mitchell said.

Mitchell added the school has received several messages of support from the local football community.

Blake Barnett, Santiago’s quarterback, posted a photo on his Twitter account of a prayer candle he lit for Walker during his weekend recruiting trip to the University of Notre Dame in South Bend, Ind.

“Lit candle for you big guy. Heal up soon. We all love you,” Barnett wrote.

The players on Santiago’s girls volleyball team said a prayer for Walker moments before taking the court Saturday for their CIF-Southern Section championship match in Orange.

“It’s impressive seeing how the Santiago community comes together in these times of hardship and struggle,” Mitchell said. “We’re taking it one day at a time, and we’re here to give any support Jordan and his family need.”

  • GP AKA Green Machine

The bad weather makes things real easy for Monrovia…Give the ball to the trio of two’s #2 #22, and# 20. Monrovia has been known to throw when it’s not needed, try to be balanced when they have not stopped the run yet…With Triston Brown and Melquise stoval in the secondary, you don’t want create any pick 6 nor short field opportunities for the Clete. If It was a sunny warm and clear day…you might see Monrovia throwing with their backs to the endzone ETC… The forcast should force our hands…and we should hand the ball off to # 2 until we are green in the face. If we can get up a few scores and don’t turn it over, Paraclete will be forced to throw and even with their starter, that plays into Monrovia’s hands. The most important thing in a wet game for Monrovia will be the “Snaps”. We can not afford to have balls snapped over the punters head, throw the PAT holders hands, or over the Qb’s head in the zone read and actually we should go under center, and just ram it out of the “I”. Scoby must get 30 touches…and we should run the ball
95% of the time. If we do this, we should win comfortably in Lancaster.

  • New York

What team is on Coach Zernickow’s mind the most this week: Arroyo, Monrovia or…San Gabriel? Discuss.

    • Nomoredrama

Well, Arroyo should be what’s on his mind. Prepare for one game at a time, otherwise, that one you don’t take seriously will be the one to bite you.

    • saints Fan

      Arroyo, guaran”flippin”TTTTT
One thing he seems pretty good at is focusing at the task at hand. It has been a few years since a Finals Appearance, so the task at hand of beating Arroyo pretty sure is forefront.

    • GrimReaper

He should worry about Arroyo, as the SD pass defense was exposed last week by the SM (primarily a running team) passing offense that yielded a lot of long bombs and open receivers on short and long routes. The SD pass rush was anemic. SD played about as well as it could that night with (I believe not a single turnover). Add to that the fact that the SM replacement Soph QB took apart the SD pass d, does not bode well given Coto’s vast skills to hit a large number of receivers. SD is going to need to set up a much better scheme of blitzes and coverages, or it is going to be a long night.

Arroyo is a very good passing team and the match up looks bad for SD.

As I stated before, Arroyo has a real chance to pull off the biggest upset of the mid valley CIF playoffs based on a bad match up. SD needs to do some serious prep to turn things around, on pass defense, during a shortened (Thanksgiving) week. This looks like a real game.

And no, the Reaper is not in a Tryptophanic Turkey induced haze. Not yet anyway. Reaper’s game of the week!

Beats spending big gas money to drive to Antelope Valley to freeze and watch Monrovia destroy Clete (with no QB) in the CIF lousy game of the week.

Since you have been so quiet I had to find a resent post to get a hold of you. Hey remember when you said this back in September. “This is worst set of backs to play at SD in 5 years…They made the line
look bad. They are small, go down easy, slow and fumble.” or when you said this “They wont even reach the semis.” Well 4,700 rushing yards, 62 TDs, and home game in the finals says otherwise. We remember everything. We remember blogs from September. we remember Scoby trash talking before, during and after the game. We remember throat slashes at our bench. We remember MHS fan talking state before the season even starts. We remember this “San Marino 28 vs SD 35- Battle for 2nd place.” Time to man up & eat your crow. Share with us your thoughts and disappointment. We may lose next week and still finish 2nd but your arrogance got you what you deserve. Getting in bed with Scoby is a black eye on your program. I saw the Paraclete film and I would take Avila over Potts all day and twice on Sunday, he cost you the game.

        • New York

“Getting in bed with Scoby”??? Monrovia is a public school, just as San Dimas is. Are there any players on San Dimas’s team who have transfered into the school and are having a significant impact on the football team?

This post is pretty vindictive beyond rebutting GP AKA Green Machine, just like the posts that went after Jake Payton, another teenager.

          • Saint Parent

They and he got what they deserved. He was no where near eligible when he got there in the summer with credits he earned. The credit recovery he took in the summer to become eligible is embarrassing. Then through the season and playoffs the MHS coaching staff allowing him to act the way he did towards other coaches in pregame, the taunting during the game, and his actions on and off the field. These are not isolated incidents, this is who he is. He was like this at all 3 of his other schools. He is not a good representative of how a young man should act. Jake Payton solicited text messages from teammates trying to implicate his head coach in a supplement scandal to get him fired. What do these actions say about these young men. This has nothing to do with players transferring and their impact on the field. But when you transfer and throw it in peoples faces and try to do harm that’s another story. All the SD transfers carried themselves with class and respect. They were positive representatives of their school and their team. All season we have been the only ones in our corner. Writers, bloggers, parents, and other have been bashing us and picking against us. Our boys did their talking with the scoreboard, not their mouths. So to answer your question, they chose to do whatever they could to get Scoby eligible so they could make a run at a state title. It didn’t work out for them and I am glad it happened that way. We may finish second Friday but our staff and our players will be classy in defeat just the same as in victory. My only hope is that JP and Scoby are there to watch it unfold. They deserve eachother.

            Deserve? Very philosophical of you.

You seem to know far too much about both these kids, at least you claim to know a lot about them. Credit recovery? Do you work at Monrovia’s district office and have access to privileged information?

Why not just focus on all the good that your own kid and his teammates are doing? Why go after other kids who are on two of the teams that beat San Dimas this season?

Did Payton supposedly do that stuff after San Dimas blocked his transfer to Upland? You seem pretty vindictive. I’m sure you can relate to someone responding like Payton did to the transfer denial.

There was a whole lot of Payton bashing earlier this season. Just last year Payton was the SD poster child. What else turned the poster child against the program? Maybe he did not want to be in a program that was encouraging players to take Muscle Milk…who knows? I bet it had more to do with the vindictive nature of a certain SD Parent.

This isn’t exactly weather that calls for St. Bernard’s coming to the rescue with a jug of brandy around their neck. We are talking about a LOW of 39…that is not even freezing. My goodness, people.

This Arroyo game seems to be just a formality for San Dimas. The Wing-Z is similar to the crane in the Karate Kid. If done right, no can defend. Even Freddy has this victory and the next just a forgone conclusion for the Saints. I think it is safe to say, Freddy knows what he is writing about. The Saints are not marching in, they are mailing it in this week.
