Tribskin Pick’em: Only Tribune teams I have making it to Thansgiving practice are San Dimas and Arroyo

Aram Tolegian and I will go head-to-head picking football games throughout the season. He edged me out the past two seasons, but it’s not happening this year, not when we’re playing for a Slater’s 50-50 burger.

Aram Tolegian (20-12, last week); (175-70, season total)
Fred Robledo (23-9, last week); (178-67, season total)

11-8-13 SDIMAS15

Last Week: I picked up three games on Aram and helped my cause by taking Diamond Bar, Los Altos, Muir, all teams that Aram predicted their season’s would end on Friday. Aram has some catching up to do, but there are several more games this week for us to choose.

This week: When I made my Divisional predictions, I predicted La Serna-Muir in the Southeast finals, Monrovia-San Dimas in the Mid-Valley finals and Rancho Cucamonga, Corona Centennial in the Inland finals. All are still alive so I’ve got them all winning this week. Diamond Bar with Antonio Noodles Hull could give La Serna a scare, but that’s about it. Muir-Los Altos is a heavyweight match, but how can you not like Muir after beating La Mirada last week. One of the tough games to predict is Arroyo at Schurr, especially after how bad the Mission Valley looked in the Mid-Valley and with Arroyo rallying to beat Baldwin Park. I’ll still take Arroyo, but don’t feel as good about it as I did a week ago. San Dimas at San Marino looks dangerous on paper for the Saints, but the Saints are looking too good, and if they win, there is no doubt they’re going to the finals.

Walnut girls soccer coach Carlos Guerrero has resigned; season starts next week

Walnut girls soccer coach Carlos Guerrero resigned for family reasons, I was told. Guerrero and his girlfriend are expecting a child in January.

Interestingly enough, Aram jumped on twitter and wondered if former coach Lorraine Hansen, who Guerrero replaced in 2011, would possibly return. Hansen’s record speaks for itself, she won three straight CIF titles as coach. She said no to returning, but one of her tweets were telling, suggesting she might have been forced out by the District.

Charter Oak 53, Yucaipa 33: Not that Charter Oak’s 53-33 victory over visiting Yucaipa in the first round of the CIF-Southern Section Inland Division playoffs Friday is going to make state power and top-seeded Vista Murrieta shake in its boots, but it was the Chargers’ seventh consecutive victory after nearly squandering a big fourth-quarter lead.
San Dimas 48, Gabrielino 6: Host San Dimas defeated Gabrielino 48-6 in the first round of the CIF-SS Mid Valley Division playoffs Friday night. The win gave San Dimas coach Bill Zernickow his 100th career win.The Saints dominated early and led 48-3 at halftime to force a running clock in the second half.
Norwalk 42, West Covina 27: West Covina could not have imagined getting off to a better start, but in the end it was ability of Rashaad Penny as a receiver that made all the difference as Norwalk came from behind to win 42-27 in the first round of the CIF-SS Southeast Division playoffs on Friday.
Upland 21, South Hills 14: After earning a share of the Baseline League title with a victory over Rancho Cucamonga last week, Upland mustered enough grit to get past West Covina South Hills, 21-14, in the first round of the CIF-SS Inland Division playoffs Friday night.
Arroyo 56, Baldwin Park 53: Those were sighs of relief coming from the Arroyo High School sideline rather than sounds of celebration. The second-seeded Knights (10-1) had to come from behind in the fourth quarter and then hung on for a 56-53 win over at-large selection Baldwin Park in a wild CIF-Southern Section Mid-Valley Division first-round playoff game.
Duarte 27, Maranatha 17: Duarte used a swarming defense to keep Maranatha’s outstanding offense in check, allowing the Falcons to advance to the second round of the CIF-SS Northwest Division playoffs with a 27-17 road win Friday night.
Diamond Bar 63, Downey 29: Downey High’s reign as CIF-SS Southeast Division kingpin ended abruptly Friday night. The host Vikings were ousted from the playoffs in decisive fashion as visiting Diamond Bar stormed to a 63-29 victory.

FOOTBALL PLAYOFFS: Can Los Altos handle Paramount’s size?

lOSALTOSWINBy Aram Tolegian
It is anybody’s guess as to who will win Friday’s first-round game between host Los Altos and Paramount, but one thing’s for certain, the Conquerors are in for a whale of a challenge.
Paramount boasts 11 players on its roster who weigh 270 pounds or more. Five of them are 300-pounders
The Conquerors are actually one of the bigger teams along both lines around these parts, but they are no match on the scales for the Pirates.
Los Altos finished the season at 8-2 and in second place in the Hacienda League. Their reward was a home game, but that’s where the benefits ended. Getting assigned Paramount, which finished in a three-way tie for the San Gabriel Valley championship, is no picnic.
The Conquerors got assigned Paramount, which finished in a three-way tie for the San Gabriel Valley League championship. Kickoff is 7 p.m. at Los Altos on Friday night.
