SOURCE: Former Los Altos and Damien coach Greg Gano applies for Wilson football job

Sources have confirmed that former Los Altos coach Greg Gano, who won four championships at Los Altos, has applied for the head coaching position at Wilson. It could be an ideal fit for Gano, who had a tough time at Damien and most recently Tustin, where he didn’t finish the 2013 season, resigning after an 0-4 start.

First thoughts: Wilson would be nuts not to hire Gano. You put Gano back in the SGV at a public school like Wilson, who competes in the Valle Vista league and is attractive from an academic standpoint for potential transfers and skies the limit. Plus, you’re hiring the former head coach of an old rival, which makes it even more appealing for the Wildcats. You want to instantly raise your street cred, this is the hire you make. Sources also suggest that Nogales could be appealing to Gano, but that the position may not become available. Athletic Director Bruce Alley, who took over the team just weeks before the 2013 season on an interim basis, is considering remaining on as the permanent coach.

The game has passed GG bye….. he still does all the same crap he did 20 years ago. We know how that worked out @ Damian and Tustin. He is a dinosaur now.

    • FredJ

I don’t think that’s true at all, it’s all about the fit … and this would be a perfect fit. Besides, who is Wilson going to get that would even compare?

      • AMAT 73

        Fred J,
You guys said that Damien would be the perfect fit fpr Gano and we all know it was a size to small in the fit department . If Wilson is happy with where they are at now then yes it’s a perfect fit , but if they are expecting great things from the football team as in a league championship or more , bad choice .

        • rgd2626

sort of like Hags and amat.Only 1 league championship and only (1) playoff game win in 6 years.

        • rgd2626

and i am not bad mouthing Hags. It just has not worked out like you and im sure him ,like it was suppose to.

          • AMAT 73

            rgd2626,
Seeing as this is the first year Hags has not made the playoffs I am willing to give him some slack . The talent is coming in, which all at AMAT are happy about . Last years team was very young and those sophs will have a year under their belt next season and many who did not make the playing field will be on there next season . I have been on record on the blog on cleaning house in the OC and maybe the DC department . Our offense was very inconsistant last year and grew worse as the season went on . You cannot say that Hags is anywhere near the flop Gano was at Damien . If AMAT does not make the playoffs and at least a first round win next season , then I think the nooses will come out in droves , and rightfully so .

          • Steve Ramirez

The thing is no one since Larson has done well at Damien. Pasqy did OK, but certainly did not meet the expectations some had for the program when he was hired.

          • rgd2626

I did not say (as you put it) hags was as big as (flop)as Gano.I was talking about the expectations for both.Gano was far from doing what he and damien thought would happen. And hags and Amat are even further in my opinion from what happened.Damien never was and never will be a football school.Where amat used to be for many years.I find it intersting how you guys have kept quiet about hags and the job he is doing. And i realize some of you have family playing there .If this was any other coach you would have raked him over the coals by now.And im pretty sure the head coach is responsible for his oc and dc and ok’s the game plan. We have been hearing the same thing about how the younger classes were gonna change things for you guys for about 3 years now.

          • AMAT 73

            rgd2626,
The kids coming in now are much more talented across the board then previous . Remeber Hags had to over come the Verti years where we lost many who would have come to AMAT but the way the program was going with Verti decided to go elsewhere . Now all of the players are from the Hags’s years so to speak .and you can now see we are getting players who in the past would not have made that decision . Yes the OC and DC are under Hags and in my opinion he needs to make some moves . By the way we have not kept quiet on Hags , we are vocal , just not on the blogs as much as other honks from other schools . But also we realize just how tough it is to win a title in the PAC-5 but that doesn’t mean we should not be winning 1-2 playoff games , and I will say that this past season was a huge dissapointment

        • FredJ

I thought he would win there too. It will be interesting to see if Paredes can win and compete for titles. At that level, it’s not just about coaching, it’s about attracting talent and making it affordable enough to go to school there.

        • SpartanPride

Fred, you guys need to stop sucking up to Gano. He was the worse coach in Damien history. He tried to buy a championship team instead of coaching one. He is a terrible judge of athleticism, wasting thousands of dollars of school resources for scholarships players that completely under-performed. He would be better served applying for a used car sales position then for a head coaching job. Paredes did far more this year with less talented players and zero scholarships because he did it the old fashion way with hard work, a dedicated staff and players that worked as a team. I know you guys completely missed some great games played out there this year, but it will only be a matter of time before Damien returns to prominence.

          • FredJ

Scholarship players? From Damien? Paredes is working with the same resources and the results this season were similar to the years prior. That’s a fact jack

          • SpartanPride

That’s a fact huh? You are a crack investigative reporter. I guess you would know. And same results? Damien came in last place in Sierra last year. They tied for second this year and beat your pre-season #3 team in CH. I would say that is a vast improvement.

          • FredJ

Gano’s first year at Damien in 2009 they were 5-6, shared the league title and went to the playoffs. Paredes’ first year at Damien, 5-5, tied for second with two others, no playoffs. Gano went 6-4 the next season and made the playoffs … let’s see if Damien can keep up … Like I said, expect similar results.

          • WTF

FredJ, I have never seen someone brown nose a coach more than you. I guess your knowledge of football coaching is bad as your articles. Gano is no longer coaching for the kids but for his own pride. Pride is an awful reason to do anything. Gano should try being an AD an leave it there. Gano can not recruit. Todays youth is not stupid they see thru his bull.

  • Heights

agreed. Gano is perfect fit at Wilson and how long before he becomes the AD too. Wilson is attracting no one so Gano is a good fit. He better watch his butt though, they won’t stand for his old methods at LA.

  • 12th man

Unfortunately it doesn’t matter who Wilson’s next head coach will be..this school has had the misfortune of the evolving demographics plagued with lack of athlecticism as it’s downfall the past few years..Don’t know if even Gano can attract transfers at this point?

  • Lupe

How’s the principal & admin.? Unless he gets their support it doesn’t matter who gets the job. I don’t see Wilson getting anybody better. I think GG could compete in that league.

  • The stands

Correct me if I’m wrong but Wilson hasn’t made the playoffs since Tim Gilmore was their running back in ’08 or ’07. The coaches don’t seem to get maximum support from the administration. Also, the boosters and parents, at that time at least, made life miserable for the coaches by second guessing every decision they made.on and off the field. So, how could things get any worse at Wilson? Yes, hire Gano because Wilson has nowhere to go but up at this point. Does anyone really believe Wilson will challenge San Dimas anytime soon for the VVL title? Wilson is a good school with sound academics; it would be nice to see them compete in football as it has in basketball.

    • FredJ

Other rumors I’m hearing is that when the Divisions get realigned, the Rio Hondo League could get sent to the Northwest Division with the Montview going back to the Mid-Valley. If that happens, this is a division decided by Montview, Mission Valley and the Almont league, plus the new league that I believe will be the new Hacienda that features Ganesha, Garey and those schools. That’s a division that Wilson would like.

      • The stands

It’s amazing that only a short time ago, Wilson was in the same league as Charter Oak, Los Altos, Bonita and Diamon Ranch. The boys need to be given a chance to compete. I agree, Fred, Wilson would like that divison.

      • Saints Go Marching In

If that happens, SD has to like their chances at a repeat.

  • RCSports

    Fred,

Sorry but that is real old news. Gano was heading to Wilson before he took the Tustin job, but the AD’s over at Wilson blocked it (worried about losing their AD position). This time around Gano has been in communication with the new administration for over a month now. Hopefully this new administration has some balls and hires the guy.

It will take Gano a couple years to turn the program around, but he is the perfect fit. We all now realize he isn’t that great of a coach, but his staff does a decent job of coaching and a great job of recruiting. Wilson is Academically the best school in the district, and one of the best in the area. Add to that the league that Wilson plays in (VVL) and now Los Altos having to compete against Charter Oak and South Hills (In-League). These are all keys that Gano can and will use to recruit the quality talent in the area. One of Gano’s keys to success is getting Coach Curtis, you know what they say color kills oop speed kills.

    • FredJ

There are very few high school coaches — very few — with four or more CIF titles. You win four and you can coach, period. The titles Gano won were also in tougher divisions than the Mid-Valley and Southeast of today. It’s all about fit. Easiest way to attract talent is with a school that’s free, in a good area, and has strong Academics. Wilson has all three. What it hasn’t had is the right coach in place that can mesh it all together. And besides, what do you have to lose?

      • wilson

        Agree 100%

Gano and staff are much better recruiters than coaches.

He can win and win CIF titles in that division. Something Los Altos isnt going to be able to do in their current division, espically with charter oak moving into their division.

  • Fiala

What very few of you seem realize is that Wilson does not care about its football program, so it doesn’t matter who the new coach is. The admin does not support its program. The players have no respect for the hard work and discipline that goes into building a winning program. It starts from the top. The admin will be better off finding some part-time coach who is more interested in his real job, while the Wilson football program becomes more and more irrelevant.

    News Flash ……….

    Update from the past.

2011 Wilson OC Williams, now Head Coach at Baldwin Park is on his way out. From a source within the district not only on his way out but on his way to jail. The district is currently filing crimial charges for embezzlement.

Williams left Wilson 2011 banded from any coaching job within the HLP school district. It only took him two seasons to screw this one up.

According to the source he is gone, now its up to the DAs office if they are going files charges against Williams.

    • Heights

I’ll believe this when Aram or Fred report on it. He wasn’t the greatest coach. They played nobody and couldn’t stop anyone. They need to get a program guy and their track record is that of not helping current coaches. No one helped Heggins. He was the best they had.

  • hectichuck

wilson needs a coach who can recruit end of story. gano is a average coach but a great recruiter. and let me say to most of the idiots here wilson is not damien the bar is set alot lower at wilson especially how its in the valle vista now. gano also needs coach curtis back with him because this guy was the rock behind his recruiting . i also believe he will retain lee fair also and bring in the browns, travis and randall which would also be a plus. some of the fans that been following for wilson for years going back to the back to back championships and the 2003 team and the gilmore years will be really pissed off if they dont give a gano a chance to at least stop the bleeding here at wilson. im not a big fan of gano but i do know this man can recruit and thats what the doctor has ordered here at wilson. end of story

  • hectichuck

one other thing if only wilson could get asians to play football. some asians are great athletes so i wouls suggest that gano should hire a asian assistant coach.
