How good was Bishop Amat High School cross country runner Emily Hubert this season?
Well when you consider she missed significant training time due to injury and still set the pace for the area while qualifying for the CIF State championships for the second consecutive season, the answer is simple and to the point:
She was very good.
For her efforts, Hubert is the 2013 Tribune Girls Cross Country Runner of the Year.
“I had missed time in seasons before,” Hubert said. “I knew how to prepare myself and be ready for the big meets. This year, it was a little further into the season, so I was so scared, because I was so out of shape and state was coming up. It was nerve-wracking, but having everyone around me kept me positive, and I knew I just had to believe in myself.”
It worked. Hubert, who’s uncle is former Bishop Amat standout football player Joey Getherall, followed up with a solid effort at the CIF-Southern Section championships and state meet. At CIF-SS finals at Mt. San Antonio College, she placed fifth in Division 3 with a time of 18 minutes, one second, which was also good enough for 34th among all divisions and the best time among local runners.
At the state championships in Fresno, she led the Lancers’ team charge with a 10th-place finish in Division III at 18:19. She was 60th overall.
“I had high expectations this year,” Hubert said. “This was the first year where we had a (strong) team to work up with me, so I was really excited going into the season. I really wanted to place higher at state than I did last year. I had my sights set on going to state again, but wanted to do better than last year.”
Now she hopes to conclude here career with a state 3-peat.
“Next year, I definitely want to work on staying healthy,” Hubert said. “I havent’ been able to go through a whole season of training yet. I really want to go through a whole season working harder than I’ve ever done before. At the state meet this year, I did finish a few seconds faster than I did last year, but place-wise I went back. I was realy disappointed in myself. I know I have potential, so I definitely want to do the best I can without any excuses.”

COACH OF THE YEAR
DANIEL LODOLO, BISHOP AMAT
Lodolo is in his 15th season with the Lancers and this past fall may have been his best. In addition to Hubert, the Lancers dominated the local area with two placers among the top 12 in CIF-SS Division 3, three among the top 30 and five among the top 60. The others were Ally Palomino (18:24), who was 12th; Ashley Garnica (18:50), who was 29th, and Samantha Cabrera (19:24) and GiGi Munoz (19:32), who were 52nd and 57th, respectively.
“We were fortunate this year that we had two ninth graders (Palomino and Garnica) who showed they could run at high levels,” Lodolo said. “They could take a lot of work, so we applied the work to that ability and we got lucky. They got the bulk of our points this year. We were very fortunate.”
NEWCOMER OF THE YEAR
ALLY PALOMINO, BISHOP AMAT, FRESHMAN
The freshman was the main force for the Lancers for much of the season, leading the way until lead runner Emily Hubert returned from injury.
She proved to be nearly as effective, finishing 12th at the Division 3 finals with a time of 18:24 at the tough Mt. SAC course. She was 33rd at the state championships with a time of 19:04.
FIRST TEAM
KELSEY CRESSE, BONITA, SOPHOMORE
Cresse was the latest star for the Bearcats, who have had a few in recent years.
The sophomore had the third quickest time among local competitors at CIF-SS finals, placing 16th in Division 3 with a time of 18:35. She topped all runners from the Hacienda League.
Cresse was 45th at the state meet with a time of 19:16.

KRISTEN CAMARENA, LOS ALTOS SENIOR
Camarena enjoyed a solid season that was capped with solid finishes at CIF-SS finals.
She was one of three area runners to finish in the top 20 in Division 3, taking 19th with a time of 18:37.
ASHLEY GARNICA, BISHOP AMAT, FRESHMAN
Garnica, along with Palomino was part of the the Lancers’ freshman one-two punch.
She enjoyed solid efforts at CIF-SS finals and the state championships. She helped the Lancers qualify for the state championships as a time after placing 29th in the Division 3 section finals with a time of 18:50. Garnica helped the Lancers place fourth in the state in Division III, taking 50th with a time of 19:17.
KAILYN SCOTT, BONITA, SOPHOMORE
Scott, the younger sister of three-time runner of the year Marissa Scott, kept up the family name with a solid season. The sophomore helped the Bearcats to another solid season. She placed 31st at the Division 3 finals with a time of 18:53
EMILY HOEY, GLENDORA, SENIOR
Hoey was part of the Tartans’ one-two punch that helped the Tartans to a steady season.
The senior had one of the area’s better finishes at CIF-SS finals, placing 57th in Division 2 with a time of 18:57.
ALYSSA PEREZ, GLENDORA, SENIOR
Perez helped the Tartans to a solid finish and one of the program’s better seasons. She was 60th at the CIF-SS finals, finishing with a time of 19:01.

MEET OF THE YEAR
CIF-SS STATE CHAMPIONSHIPS
Bishop Amat capped one of its better seasons in recent memory by finishing fourth in Division III.
Junior Emily Humbert topped the perfromances with a 10th-place finish at 18:19.
The Lancers’ Ally Palomino (19:04) and Ashley Garnica (19:17) also finished 33rd and 50th, respectively.
