South Hills girls soccer remains undefeated by crushing host Walnut 9-1 to take tournament title

STORY: South Hills junior Jackie Zermeno and sophomore Amber Marinero each scored twice and Hailey Zerbel put on a passing and shooting clinic to lead the high-scoring Huskies to a 9-1 victory over host Walnut to win the Walnut Girls Soccer Tournament Monday night.
Five other players also scored, but it was the speedy Zerbel who ignited the highlight goal of the night with a flip-throw in that bounced off a couple of players in the box before Marinero flicked it over Walnut’s goalie, Elena Trigueros to give South Hills a 3-0 lead.

It was the ninth win of the year for the unbeaten Huskies (9-0-1), who reached the title game with victories over West Covina, 2-0, and Diamond Ranch, 3-0, and a 2-2 tie with Upland (Huskies won on PKs). Walnut earned its place defeating Great Oak, 1-0, Glendora, 1-0, and Bassett, 7-0.
It was South Hills’ second win this year over Walnut. The Huskies defeated the Mustangs, 3-0, in their second game of the season at Covina District Field. Walnut was the second team in the tournament South Hills had previously defeated. It also beat Diamond Ranch, 7-0, last week.
There is nothing fancy about the way South Hills finds the back of the net. All it takes is a through pass which opens things up its speedy stable of forwards led by Zerbel and Marinero.
It took less than four minutes for South Hills to break into the scoring column when Jackie Zermeno took a through pass and found herself in a one-on-one with the Walnut keeper and scored her eighth goal of the year.
Ten minutes later it was Heidi Serna drilling a left-footed shot from 20 yards to make it 2-0.
South Hills added two more goals to take a 4-0 halftime lead.
Other Huskies who scored were Brianna Hernandez, Paige Rios and Alina Cobian.
Upland, which gave South Hills its sternest test, defeated Great Oak of Temecula to win third place in the tournament.
Glendora and Diamond Ranch played to a 2-2 tie but the Tartans won in PKs to take fifth place.
West Covina won the seventh place game with an 8-1 victory over Bassett.
