West Covina tried to shut down Diamond Ranch point guard Ernest Ugoagu in Wednesday night’s Hacienda League opener. The move opened the floor for Ethan Jarrell and the sophomore made the Bulldogs pay in a 59-44 victory. “I thought they would face-guard me a little harder,” Jarrell said. “But I was open.”
Jarrell sank four 3-pointers in the first half and finished with five.

Former San Dimas star Austin Barbato eligible at Maranatha: Transfers are allowed to suit up and play this week and the Minutemen were able to play 6-foot-2 San Dimas transfer Austin Barbato for the first time in Tuesday’s 82-61 victory over La Salle. “A lot of teams will have makeovers,” Maranatha coach Tim Tucker said. “(Barbato) helps us. He makes us better because he’s a player with a high IQ for the game.”

GIRLS BASKETBALL RESULTS
Whittier Christian 57, Edgewood 20 –The Heralds established a 31-2 lead at halftime before coasting to a non-league victory over Edgewood. Sydney Lopez led the Whittier Christian offense with 10 points on 4-of-6 shooting from the field. Christa Evans added nine points with eight rebounds, while Makenna Coleman had nine points and a pair of steals for the Heralds.
Gladstone 48, Sierra Vista 40 — Senior guard Jessica Rosas accounted for a third of the Gladiators scoring with 16 points to give Gladstone a win in its Montview League opener. Eugenia Mendez and Atiana Salazar each added eight points for the Gladiators, while Savanna Rudder had seven for the team’s third win of the season.
