Damien boys, Bishop Amat, Bonita girls on CIF’s first Open Division Watch List

CIF OPEN DIVISION WATCH LIST: For the first time, the CIF Southern Section Basketball Open Division Selection Committee has released their first “Open Division Watch List”. This list has been developed to identify the current pool of schools, based upon their performance this season, as possible “Open” division entrants into the 2014 CIF-SS Basketball Championships. The schools on the “Watch List” have shown that they are among the elite basketball teams currently in the Southern Section, based upon their performance, so far this season. The committee will update the list every week to track teams through league play, leading up to final “Open” division selection, on Friday, February 14, 2014. Teams may be added and/or dropped off the Watch List” between this initial list and final selection on February 14. Up to a maximum of 16 teams may be selected for the boys and girls “Open” division playoff bracket.

Who is on it: Damien is among 30 teams listed on the boys side and Bishop Amat and Bonita are among 23 teams listed on the girls side. Remember, they will take up to 16 teams.

Here is the way I’m seeing it in our area. On the boys side I think Chino Hills and Damien could both be looking at the open division. Especially if they split their 2 league games. I don’t see anyone else in their class. Walnut and Glendora are probably the next best 2 teams in the area, and I don’t see either one of them gettin the invite, which is good for them.
On the girls side, it should have been the year that Bonita girls capture a title after being close for the last 4 years. But they are going to be the victims of their own success. I see them being a lock to play in the open. I don’t see anyone in the Hacienda even in their class, so they should be about 24-1 heading into the play-offs. Amat is kind of interesting because of their league. They have a good chance of not going to the open and thus winning another CIF title in the now depleted 1AA division.
