Wednesday’s Boys Basketball: Damien crushes Charter Oak in Sierra opener; Walnut drops Bonita to 0-3 in the Hacienda

Walnut 67, Bonita 64
Richard Rycraw scored 16 points and had a key free throw with 23 seconds left as Walnut beat Bonita for the first time in three seasons.
Bonita (12-5, 0-3), which got 14 points from Tim Trisnaldi, had a chance to tie it with 1.1 seconds left. Walnut’s Lawrence Birdsong made the second of two free throws for a 67-64 lead. But Dane Hollar’s desperation heave at the buzzer was short.
Walnut (11-5, 2-0) trailed, 31-30, at halftime, before opening the second half with blitzes of 12-4 and 17-14 for a 59-49 lead with four minutes left in the fourth quarter.
Trisnaldi hit two 3-pointers to cut it to 64-61, but Kenny Walker’s 3-pointer with 23 seconds was short.
Walnut coach Josh Cameron: “This is the first time since I’ve been here that we’ve been able to beat Bonita. We lost in overtime three times before. My guys really wanted to get that (win) for me, and I appreciate it.”

Walnut’s Richard Rycraw: “It’s great, especially since Bonita is not going to be in our league anymore. We had to send them out with a bang. “Last year, we came close to beating them, but we let it slip at the end. This game, there was a lot of pressure on us, but we had to prove that we are the better than them.”

By the way, if there is a bigger high school fan than the one pictured for Arroyo, commonly known in Arroyoland as Wolfie, I haven’t seen him.
