Bishop Amat High School knew it could not match the talent level of visiting Serra, which is one of the better girls basketball teams in the CIF-Southern Section.
The Lancers had to make up for the deficit with effort, and host Bishop Amat made a good account of itself, pushing the Division 4AA No. 1 Cavaliers before falling, 61-55, in a Del Rey League game on Tuesday.
Caila Hailey scored a game-high 16 points and Cydney Bolton had 13 for the Cavaliers, who improved to 15-2 overall and 2-0 in the Del Rey League. Bishop Amat, getting 15 points from Paulina Santana and 13 each from Dagmar Ramirez and Janae Chamois, slipped to 16-5 and 1-2.
Amat, which led for much of the first half, looked like it might pull the upset after it rallied back from an 11-point deficit early in the fourth quarter to twice pull within a bucket with less than a five minutes to play, failing to convert each time.
The Lancers, using an 11-4 blitz keyed by two baskets by Ramirez and one from Santana, cut it to 50-48 with 4:33 left on a 3-pointer by Amanda Alvarado, but with a chance to tie, Santana missed on a shot at 4:08.
Chamois, after Brijaye Brackett scored inside, cut it to 52-50 following two free throws with 3:31 to play. Amat then withstood back-to-back misses by Serra, but an Amat turnover after a pass inside, gave it back to the Cavaliers with 2:51 left.
Serra closed the final three minutes with a 9-5 run to win 61-55.

Bishop Amat coach Richard Wiard: “They are a terrific team and I was very pleased with our effort. We never gave up. A couple of things went against us in the third quarter, but we never gave up. I was very, very pleased with that. Our effort was good the whole night. We made some mistakes. We didn’t get some rebounds we have to get, we threw the ball away. But (Serra is going to force) that. There’s a reason why they are so good. But by in large, I was very pleased with our effort.”
