CIF-SS Open Division pairings: Bonita girls in position to challenge 1AA title; Damien boys might get top four seed

The pairings for all divisions will be released on Sunday.

What does this mean for Bonita and Bishop Amat girls: Bonita was ranked ninth in this week’s Division 1AA poll. With the top seven-ranked teams in 1AA moving to the Open Division (Mater Dei, Long Beach Poly, Etiwanda, Alemany, Troy, Canyon Springs and Lynwood), it means by default, No. 8 Vista Murrieta is the New No. 1 with Bonita, currently ranked ninth, becoming No. 2, greatly increasing its chances of winning the division. Bishop Amat, which was ranked 13th, now becomes the sixth ranked team heading into Sunday’s pairings.
What does this mean for Damien boys: Damien was ranked 10th in this week’s Division 1AA poll. With six teams taken from 1AA to the Open Division (Mater Dei, Loyola, Etiwanda, Chino Hills, Long Beach Poly and Mayfair), Damien becomes the fourth-ranked team by default behind Long Beach Poly, Rancho Cucamonga and Mission Viejo. After all this, Damien could get a top four seed.
Keppel girls get jobbed: While it’s an honor to be among the top 12 getting selected to the Open Division, it virtually ruins the Aztecs’ chances of winning a title. But what’s more difficult to understand is how Keppel, ranked third in this week’s Division 1A poll, was selected to the Open Division while Camarillo and Ventura, ranked 1 and 2 respectively ahead of Keppel in 1A, were not selected to the Open Division. Camarillo, Ventura and Keppel were all on the watchlist and all three won their final games this week, so why does No. 3 Keppel get selected instead of the top-two ranked in their division, Camarillo and Ventura? Makes no sense. Let the controversy begin.
