Damien High School, which won last season’s CIF-Southern Section Division 3AA championship, began this season as the area’s best chance to bring home a boys basketball title.
The Spartans still possess the area’s best hope after receiving a top-four seed after the CIF-Southern Section released its playoff pairings Sunday.
Damien, ranked No. 1 in the area most of the season, drew the No. 4 seed in Division 1AA and will host Diamond Bar, a former league foe, in the first round at 7 p.m. on Friday. The Spartans were one of 10 local teams to receive a top-16 seed among the 11 divisions but the only one to receive a top-four ranking.
Other area seeds were Walnut (14) in 1AA; Glendora (6) in 2AA; Los Altos (14) in 2A; Bonita (12) in 3AA; Bishop Amat (8), El Monte (12), Gladstone (10) and South El Monte (15) in 3A and Workman (15) in 4AA.

Damien coach Matt Dunn: It’s kind of funny. We’ve had years where we won a bunch of games, there’s been years where we struggled at the end. But ultimately, I think it comes down to whether your guys want to keep playing, and we’ve been fortunate enough to be able to do that. I feel our guys are really excited for the playoffs. I think we’re in a good spot. We still have our best basketball ahead of us.”
