BISHOP AMAT-DIAMOND BAR WILL MEET AGAIN: While Bishop Amat was coasting to a 6-0 victory over Santa Paula in the first round of the CIF-Southern Section Division 3 girls soccer playoffs, Diamond Bar was finishing an incredible comeback, winning 2-1 over Mayfield in sudden-death overtime.
Bishop Amat will meet Diamond Bar in the second round on Wednesday at a site to be determined. It’s a rematch of last year thrilling quarterfinal won by Amat 4-3 in overtime.
“We know they’re (Amat) a great team,” Diamond Bar coach Matt Brummett said. “We look forward to playing them again.”
Diamond Bar’s Marissa Favela, who made an inspiring return to the team late in the season after battling cancer, scored the game-tying goal in the dying seconds of regulation, then scored the game-winner on a 35-yard free kick in overtime to win it for the Brahmas.

The Huskies (18-3-2), runners-up in the Sierra League, were in control throughout the game and outshot the Wolves from the Big 8 League, 12-5,
Marinero hit the crossbar with one shot, then had a goal taken away for being offsides before she scored the game’s first goal in the 25th minute following a Kelcie Boone throwin. Zerbel made it 2-0 with a left-footed shot in the 32nd minute.
The Huskies put the game away quickly in the second half on a pair of goals by Heidi Serna in the 42nd and 51st minute.
Skylar Robledo finished the scoring with a breakaway goal in the 64th minute.
Goal keeper Melissa Mejia recorded her 6th shutout of the year for South Hills which will play Wednesday against the winner of Monday’s game between top-seeded Sunny Hills and Palos Verdes.

Mario Saenz delivers for Sierra Vista: The Sierra Vista High School boys soccer team entered Thursday’s CIF-Southern Section Division 4 boys first-round playoff game against visiting Culver City after learning earlier in the day it had lost junior forward Sebastian Ocampo, who was declared academically ineligible after scoring 24 goals and a big reason the Dons were undefeated and the second seed.
But Sierra Vista still has part of its dynamic duo with senior striker Mario Saenz, who picked up the slack by scoring both goals in the Dons’ 2-1 victory over the Centaurs to advance to Tuesday’s second round against either Bishop Amat or La Mirada.

LA SALLE 55, WORKMAN 41

INDUSTRY — La Salle High School struggled a bit while playing in arguably the toughest girls basketball league in the CIF-Southern Section.
But the payoff for being in the rugged Del Rey League, which features powers Serra, Bishop Amat and Bishop Montgomery, came Thursday night.
Claire Fitzgerald scored a game-high 26 points to lead the Lancers to a 55-41 victory over host Workman in a CIF-Southern Section Division 4AA first-round game.
La Salle, also getting 10 points each from Caroline Knop and Dionna Williams, improved to 12-13 and will face either Flintridge Sacred Heart or No. 9 29 Palms in Saturday’s second round. The Lancers are the No. 8 seed.
Alize Williams had 22 points for Workman, which finished 18-9.
La Salle nearly put this one away during the first quarter, using a 16-2 run to start the game to take command. Williams finished the opening period with 14 points as the Lancers led 20-5. Workman was held to two field goals and committed five turnovers during the first five minutes.
But the Lobos, who went 13-1 in winning the Montview League, rallied. Workman, also getting 12 points from Alicia Aguirre, cut it to 24-15 early in the second quarter. Then after falling behind by 15 in the fourth quarter, the Lobos rallied to within 10 before two missed opportunities sealed their fate.

La Salle’s Claire Fitzgerald: “Playing those really great teams (in the Del Rey League) prepared us for the playoffs, because they are great teams. We were just 1-7 in league, but playing those great teams help us prepare for the playoffs.”

Workman’s Alize Williams: “We were on a downfall at first. We had to talk it up and see what we could do. It was tough.”

Gladstone hangs on in the final seconds for a 46-45 victory over Laguna Hills in Wednesday’s Division 3A playoff. The Gladiators are an impressive 23-3, getting a team-high 13 points from Ben Reaves and 12 from inside bruiser Eddie Servin. We talked to both along with coach Gary Kilmer, as well as video of the final moments. Take a look

Bonita advances: Bonita knew San Gorgonio had a size advantage, so the Bearcats did the logical thing: they stayed outside.
Bonita jumped out to a 10-point lead after the first quarter and San Gorgonio never recovered, as Bonita pulled away late for a 63-43 victory in a CIF-SS Division 3AA first-round boys basketball game on Wednesday night.

Bishop Amat advances with defense: A young Bishop Amat boys basketball team overcame some early jitters and used a stifling defense to knock off Hawthorne 59-44 in a CIF-Southern Section Division 3A first-round game on Wednesday night.
The eighth-seeded Lancers will play the winner of the Pomona-Antelope Valley game at 7p.m. on Friday night at a site to be determined.

La Puente comes up short: The La Mirada High School boys basketball team hasn’t been out of the first round in the CIF-Southern Section playoffs in five years.
Wednesday night at La Mirada, the Matadores erased that memory and gave third-year coach Bryce Jones his first playoff win with a 65-41 victory in the first round of Division 3AA over La Puente.

SAN DIMAS 68, SOUTH EL MONTE 66

SOUTH EL MONTE >> If the CIF-Southern Section boys basketball playoffs are all about advancing and surviving, then San Dimas High School certainly fit the bill on Wednesday.
Ryan Campo scored a game-high 20 points and the Saints withstood a rally by host South El Monte to score a 68-66 victory over the Eagles in a Division 3A first-round game.
San Dimas, also getting 14 points from Elias Hernandez and 10 from Greyson McGee, improved to 12-13 and will host No. 2 seed St. Francis in the second round on Friday.
South El Monte, getting 18 points each from Eduardo Hernandez and Alex Ortiz, finished 13-8. The Eagles, who trailed as much as 24 points during the first half, had a chance to win it at the end, but Marcos Lopez’ 3-point attempt at the buzzer was tipped and fell short.

South El Monte coach Robert Burgess: “We didn’t have any time outs left, so I did’t have a chance to set anything up. I really hoped we would just take the ball to the basket, because we were only down two. He thought he was open and tried the 3-pointer.”

San Dimas’ Ryan Ocampo: “They came at us. We thought we had the game already in our hands, but they came back. We had to calm down, regroup and grind it out. We just had to come out with the win.”

Azusa High School’s Patrick Cordova-Goff, the state’s first transgender student athlete, attends first practice with the Aztecs softball team

Normally the first day of practice isn’t a big deal, but at Azusa High School, it was a groundbreaking moment as senior Patrick Cordova-Goff, the state’s first transgender student-athlete, attended her first practice with the Aztecs softball team after learning last week she made the varsity team following tryouts.

Cordova-Goff, who was born male, but identifies herself a female, took fly balls and played briefly at third base during the nearly two-hour practice on Tuesday.

New rules that went into effect for the 2013-2014 sports season state that students can participate in CIF-State activities “in a manner that is consistent with their gender identity, irrespective of the gender listed on a student’s records.”

Cordova-Goff, who also ran for homecoming queen and was a member of the school’s cheer squad, tried out for softball because of a new law that began in January written by Assemblyman Tom Ammiano — Assembly Bill 1266 — that states all schools in California have to allow students to participate in school activities — including athletic teams and competitions — and use facilities consistent with the gender identity with which the student identifies.

Former league rivals Northview and South Hills will square off on Thursday at Maverick Park in West Covina for an exhibition baseball game to support the RJ Legacy Foundation. Opening ceremonies are scheduled for 6 p.m.
The RJ game, the fourth since 2010, will feature new South Hills coach Darren Murphy, who previously coached at Northview and built the Vikings into one of the Valley’s top prorgrams, vs. Northview’s new coach Dan Roddy, a long-time assistant at South Hills.
Pre-game ceremonies include at tribute to RJ and late Alta Loma head coach and Bonita assistant coach Ted Persell, who died in December.
