Baldwin Park boys soccer eliminated from state playoffs, 4-1; Danny Vega gets 40th

Story: Baldwin Park High School’s invitation to the CIF-State Southern California Division II boys soccer regionals was a brief one, losing to San Diego sectional champion Southwest, 4-1, on Tuesday at San Ysidro High School near the Mexican border.
Baldwin Park’s Danny Vega scored in the 75th minute to help the Braves avoid the shutout, giving Vega his 40th goal to rank among the state leaders.
The Braves (21-5-1) gave up an early goal and another just before half to fall behind 3-0, perhaps hangover effects from their CIF-SS Division 5 championship on Friday.
Baldwin Park beat Marshall in penalty kicks for the sectional title, getting the game-winning penalty from Vega for the 5-4 PK victory after a scoreless regulation and two overtimes.
The Braves’ championship was their second in four years, but in the state playoffs, they’re 0-for-2, having lost in the first round of the state playoffs following their 2011 title as well.
Southwest (20-2-4) advances to Thursday’s regional finals against top seed Cathedral (27-1-1)
