COVINA – The 5-2 Gladstone win over Rosemead on Wednesday afternoon, in front of a crowd of several hundred fans, was more than just an early season high school baseball game.
In a game that was played in a way that any of his former players would have recognized, Gladstone baseball coach Rich Remkus picked up the 600th win of his 30-year career at the school.
“I’ve been very fortunate,” Remkus said. “The man up above has given me decent health so I could coach into my old age. I’ve just had wonderful, hard-working players and assistant coaches and the success has belonged to them. My 88-year-old mom is here and my dad was my biggest supporter. He was at all our games and he was down here working on this field the night before he died of a heart attack. I wish he could be here.”
