NORWALK –
History was made Sunday at Cerritos College.
It just wasn’t the California Community College Athletic Association milestone that the Mt. San Antonio College women’s basketball team was hoping for.
Adrianne Sloboh scored 27 points and had 19 rebounds and Ventura College won the race to seven state titles with a 68-55 victory over Mt. SAC, also gunning for a state-best seven CCCAA championships, in the title game.
Lisa Marie Sanchez had 22 points and Brooke Dixon 14 for the Pirates, who finished 32-3.
Shaela Flynn (Muir High School) had 14 points and Sashanique Youngblood 13 for the Mounties, who finished 29-5.
The Mounties’ fate was all but sealed during the first 14 minutes when it made just 2 of 23 from the field, keying Ventura to a 22-4 lead. Mt. SAC, which shot 18 percent in the first half, could never really recover, twice cutting the deficit to 13 points in the second half and 12 with less than 10 minutes to play. But the Pirates, who were held to 27-percent shooting in the first half and 33 for the game, countered each move and pushed the advantage to 60-40 with just over three minutes to play.

Mt. SAC coach Brian Crichlow: “I’m proud of this group. They battled and competed all year long. I told them after, ‘Don’t hang your heads. You had a fantastic season, and this was the year when they said Mt. SAC would be down and you were in the championship.’ At the end of the day, we got out of them everything we could possibly get out of them this year, and I’m proud of them.”

Mt. SAC’s Shaela Flynn: “We got down so much in the first half. We fought to trimming the lead (in the second half), We came back and played at our tempo (in the second half), but we gave up too much in the first half.”

Can someone explain why this Mt. SAC story is in the Prep Sports blog?

Just giving some extra pub to the locals…it’s mostly a prep blog, but we also include the local colleges. It’s here if you want it…if not, you can always click on the other topics.
