BALDWIN PARK —
Expectations are high for the Sierra Vista High School softball team this season, and so far the Dons, are living up to the billing.
Angelica Ochoa was dominant in the circle and Melissa Gutierrez had three RBIs as Sierra Vista remained undefeated in the Montview League with a 6-0 victory over Workman on Thursday.
Ochoa tossed a two-hitter and stuck out nine for the Dons, who improved to 3-0-1 overall and 2-0 in league play. Sierra Vista, which shared the league crown with Duarte last season, also got two hits from Brianna Moreno.
Jackie Negrete had two hits and a double for Workman, which slipped to 3-4 and 0-1.
Sierra Vista, which opened league play with a 2-1 victory over Azusa on Tuesday, led 4-0 after three innings, mostly on the bat of Gutierrez. She gave them a 1-0 lead with an RBI single in the first. Gutierrez, following an error and a hit-by-pitch to Ochoa, made it 3-0 with a two-run single in the third. Maya Lopez had a sacrifice fly to score Gutierrez to make it 4-0 in the inning.
Ochoa did the rest. She yielded just four baserunners, giving up a single in the first and double in the seventh. Workman also had two other batters reach on errors. She retired nine of the final 10 to improve to 3-0.

Sierra Vista’s Melissa Gutierrez: “I’ve been working hard in practice, so I came up hoping to get a base hit. I clutched up today, I improved and had a (few) RBIs.”

Sierra Vista’s Angelica Ochoa: “I’ve been working really hard in practice, but I felt like today was one of my better games. I was throwing harder and and I know if I listen to my coach and throw the pitches he wants me to throw, I can be effective.”
