Damien coach Mark Paredes on joining the Baseline: “Whether we’re in the Pac-5 or where we are now, it’s really neither here nor there because we are where we are and I’m really excited about being in the Baseline League.”

paredessWith the votes counted and Damien High School headed back to the Mt. SAC Area for league grouping and into the Baseline League beginning next fall, Spartans football coach Mark Paredes isn’t exactly breathing a sigh of relief.

Before Damien won its arbitration hearing to get out of the parochial grouping, the Spartans appeared on their way to being in a PAC-5 Division league along with several catholic football powers.

Now, Damien will be in the Baseline League where it traded the likes of Bishop Amat, Notre Dame and Serra for Upland, Rancho Cucamonga and Chino Hills. Not exactly a huge relief.

“I like the league we’re in now and it’s a good opportunity to play great competition and I’m looking forward to it,” Damien head coach Mark Paredes said. “To me it doesn’t matter. We’re going to work hard and be ready to play in whatever league we’re going to be in.

“Whether we’re in the Pac-5 or where we are now, it’s really neither here nor there because we are where we are and I’m really excited about being in the Baseline League.”

I’m EXCITED to be in the Baseline”….. Really? If you were put in the Palomares and have Bonita in the Baseline like you begged for then how would you feel? Hysterical, gaga, maybe twerk a little or pee your pants with happiness?

    • Roger

Coach Paredes could care less what league he is put in. He is all about hard work and getting his athletes to play the best they can. Does not to say that no one at the school does. But if you think he is, you are just barking at the wrong tree and peeing on your self in the progress.

I was not challenging coaches work ethic. Every high school HC works hard in the SGV. My point was the effort Damien made to go to the Palomares and not the Baseline after winning their suit. That effort was not about bus rides or the girls wrestling team but to get into a league where they felt competition would be easier and while we are at it if we can have our way, throw our neighbor Bonita under the bus. That’s Christian charity(lol). My point was about the statement that your coach said he was excited to be in the Baseline because it is obvious that he would rather be elsewhere by the placement recommendation Damien made. So yeah, his excited to be in the Baseline hypocritical comment did make me pee my pants as well.

I have talked to Coach Paredes in more than one occasion and have asked him about playing in the Pac-5, and he had no problem playing against them or in the Baseline league. He is an “Old School Coach” who is just concerned about preparing his team to play to the best of their abilities. He would prepare the same way if they were in the Palomares league. I cannot speak for anyone else at Damien other then some athletes that were excited to play against people they know.

Dog bites Man is no story. Man bites Dog is. Damien did something so gutless and that’s the story. All this nonsense to avoid playing in four football games against Pac 5 talent. Seriously would any prep writer worth his salt be shocked if Rio Hondo Prep was placed in the same league with Loyola, Notre Dame and Bishop Amat instead of Damien? Would Steve, Fred and Aram sit by and avoid the ridiculousness of such an arrangement? Cathedral, Serra, Alemany, Notre Dame and Crespi have stepped up but Damien cries foul? St. John Bosco was just crowned National Champs in Football, an opponent Damien regularly played previously, but Damien wants relief? Cantwell and Cathedral were in the Open Division in Basketball but Damien wants relief after opening with Bassett? This isn’t about Damien doing what’s in it’s best interest anymore but about Damien Dads lacking the confidence in their sons and coaches to compete. All the rest is smoke screen nonsense. Never realized the “shield” Sparta carries is Daddy’s bought and paid for. All the Catholic schools in CIF know the deal, Sparta courage is now only seen on the silver screen.

Really? Do you know any facts about the situation? This has nothing to do with varsity football. And by the way, Damien came very close to competing in the open basketball division as well. This has everything to do with the lower level sports that would have to miss half days of school in order to drive all the way out to LA, Thousand Oaks, Ventura, etc. and then have to sit in traffic all the way back. You see, kids at Damien actually care about academics and have home work (look it up). The issue is very simple and has more to do with academics then with athletics. Damien has competed with public schools for over 40 years. There was no reason to change this now other than religious bias. Obviously the mitigation agreed. Quit spewing out your BS about daddy’s money and look at the facts. Why do you even care? Are you worried about Damien beating up on your kid or maybe you grew up in the era of Damien dominance and worried it is going to happen again? Damien will continue to compete at a high level in ALL sports and continue to represent the I.E with pride!

      • Valley Athletics

Serra ,notre dame , Amat and Loyola would of been in there schedule . No Thousand Oaks or Ventura .

      • Leo Tolstoy

Damien is in the San Gabriel Valley and does not represent the I.E. at all.

      • Jastrab

I don’t understand the academic angle. My older brothers went to Damien and the education, expectations and homework are identical to Amat. Please don’t make it any other way. As a matter of fact, I did slightly better on my SAT/ACT and both of my brothers graduated at the top of their class. This is not about homework. I would offer you Loyola (although in a down athletic cycle) who is probably one of the top athletic/academic schools in SoCal and has traveled for 40 years.

    • no-step

When reality bites Tolstoy, maybe he won’t sound so dumb.

    • Valley Athletics

Damien didn’t ask for relief . They just didn’t want to move up and used the travel excuse , but they schedule palm desert , Los alamitos and other schools that are far .

      • Here’s JOHNNY, or Little Johnn

Please leave the folks at Damien alone. It does not feel good to travel all that way and loose. Sitting in traffic only makes it harder to swallow, cause you have to sit and think about the loss over and over in your head and that my friend does take a toll on someone. I can see they are trying to rebuild and I am sure Paredes will get them on track. But its hard to move forward when you are facing an uphill battle…i.e. BA, Loyala, ND, Serra. Now it seems that Salesian will have to take the spot vacated by Damien. Damien parents please stop saying it was not about the PAC-5, STOP!!!!

        • CTS

What a bunch of blow hearts. Parades will play anyone anywhere and if you know him there is little doubt about that and for the record he did want to be in the PAC5. He has been in the D1 and D2 most of his career. Before you run your trap learn how to read an org chart. Parades doesn’t make decisions for the sports program. He is one opinion and amongst all the coaches. The AD and principle take those opinions and make a decision. Real simple.

    • That’s right!

Don’t know if it is ignorance or jealousy what speaks on your behave, but as proud parents of a Spartan I can tell you that you would be complaining either for the distance or pack-5 competitiveness, too: however, personally for me it was the fact of Discrimination towards private schools- reason we won in court. So please if you don’t have a constructive criticism, keep your “gutless” comments to yourself.

    • CTS

Man what a dumb ass…fell bad for your wife and kids

  • compete

Ok lets move from football for a minute and talk baseball. Maybe someone can ask Little Albert why he hasn’t wanted to play Bonita in baseball for two years?Maybe because little Albert didn’t get his way, or just fearful of a cross town rival beating his butt for two years from a D3 school. Not to mention he left the Dick’s tournament for reasons that are beyond ridiculous to avoid playing Bonita! Maybe if Bonita is really re-building this year, this would be another easy way out. LOL
Its the same old Damien, run from Amat and other privates, throw cross town rival under the bus, and now you want relief again? Omg its now time to step up like CO did.

    • Here’s JOHNNY, or Little Johnn

Well from what i understand… CO did not want AMAT either, so bad example.

      • compete

CO reference was about how they played in a tougher league like the Sierra during the last re-align and kicked the crap out of Damien. Not bad for a small base enrollment.

        • Here’s JOHNNY, or Little Johnn

Also not bad for a public recruiting school either. Just ask Monrovia, Duarte, Pasadena…

        • AMAT 73

          compete ????
Maybe CO kicked the crap out of Damien ( nothing to really brag about ) but they went into the Sierra crying and begged for relief first chance the got .Bottom line , Damien wanted no part of PAC – 5 football right now . May change later but not now .

          • compete

I guess you didn’t get the point either. Didn’t CO win league(step up) for little school in a bigger school league and do pretty good? CO did ask for relief given there size of enrollment. Check the number of league champs in the Sierra and get back to me… ???

          • AMAT 73

            compete ,
You come on here slamming Damien for the exact samething CO did . Only difference is Damien has the bucks behind them to take it to court . Now since you brought up the league titles , why beg for relief if they are consistently winning league , seems to me that is a sign they can bang with D-2 competition or was the Sierra just a league of watered down D-2 competition other than CH ????? Size of enrollment really isn’t that big of a factor for CO seeing as they do draw their fair share of football transfers .

    • Sports watcher

Little Albert needs to be replaced with a coach who wants to compete. He continues to play in tournaments with less talented schools to make him look good and make his program look good. He should play the Boras tourney like true competitors do. If Dr Hemenway knows what’s best, he’ll get clean house starting with the AD and Little Albert along with his his entire staff. I can’t believe he is still there. I left two years ago and Little Albert still hasn’t done anything to improve Damien’s baseball program. What has he done with his talent? Nothing, zero, zilch! Academics have nothing to do with sports.

“Whether we’re in the Pac-5 or where we are now, it’s really neither here nor there…”
Obviuosly it was a problem. Grow a pair coach and play big boy football!
