ARCADIA INVITE PREVIEW: Track and field in the U.S. might be back on an upswing.
It still may not be the first pulse of the average American adult, but it apparently is hitting heartbeats among the nation’s youth.
Arcadia Invitational track and field meet director Rich Gonzales knows it is happening. It is why he will be pushing for bigger fields in future years,
“Honestly, we’re at the point where we need to find a way to make it larger,” he said. “There are so many people not getting in.
“The demand is obviously there. There are so many people that are turned away and they are good people. Our cutoff on the bottom end gets tougher each year.”
The three-day 47th annual meet, which begins today at Arcadia High School, has nearly 4,000 athletes from 712 high schools in 30 U.S. states, Canada, Mexico, Australia and New Zealand competing. It’s been roughly the same amount of athletes competing for the last several years.
