Walnut track enjoying historical season

It’s been a record run for the Walnut High School track and field team.
The Mustangs can take the Hacienda League dual meet title with a win over visiting Diamond Bar today. But what has been most impressive has been the school records. Five varsity marks and a soph-frosh record have fallen this season.
“At the beginning of the season we set performance goals for everyone for about five percent and they have blown them out of the water,” Walnut coach Keith Thompson said. “It seems like everything has worked perfectly with the kids. It’s been a perfect season.
“We knew we would be a good team, but were not just sure.”
Sophomore transfer Kayla Richardson has set school records in the 100 (11.90) and 200 meters (24.40) and teamed with Victoria Sandoval, Malia Avila and Kamayra Richardson in the 4 X 100 in 48.58. Millen Trujillo set a record in the 1,600 (4:15.39), including a win in last weekend’s San Gabriel Valley Championship, and Alan Tantiwassadakran set a record in the 110-meter high hurdles (14.63).

Dominic Gonzales set a soph-frosh record in the 800 (1:57.38).

“It’s the best season since I’ve been here,” Thompson said. “We have the best coaching staff that we can assemble and everyone has been highly motivated.”

The Richardson sisters, junior Kamayra and twins Kayla and Kyla, transferred from Etiwanda. Kayla ran faster times last year. Kyla has yet to run this season because of injuries, but Thompson hopes she will be back in time for next week’s league prelims and finals, May 6 and 8 at Walnut.
