EL MONTE —
The Mission Valley League baseball title will stay at Arroyo High School.
Senior Derick Martin singled home pinch-runner Anthony Barcelo in the bottom of the seventh inning as the host Knights rallied for a 3-2 victory over rival Rosemead on Thursday to secure the league title for the second consecutive season.
Martin and Damian Gutierrez had two hits each and Lorenzo Perez tossed a four-hitter for Arroyo, which improved to 14-7 overall and 13-2 in league play
Matthew Campos had two hits for Rosemead, which slipped to 13-19 and 12-3.
Perez started the winning rally with a lead-off walk. Barcelo then advanced to second on a sacrifice before taking third on a single by Gutierrez. Martin followed with his second RBI single to win it.
Arroyo’s Derick Martin: “It feels great. I knew all I needed was a little base hit. It feels so great to get it back-to-back. Our team hasn’t done this in a long time. I feel so honored to be just a part of this team. This is not really a team, it’s a family, and we’re just so proud of everything.”

Rosemead coach Daniel Meza: “They out hit us today and got it on a walk-off. Sometimes, it moments like this when everything is on the line, it takes just one key hit. They prevailed, so we have to tip our hat to them and give them credit for it.”
