What’s going on behind the scenes at Bishop Amat? Soph’s Anthony Walters and Christian Moya leave … Who will be its next baseball coach? El Rancho’s Gabe Lopez? How about John Romano

Conspiracy theorists will have a field day with what allegedly has gone on behind the scenes over the past few weeks in regards to Bishop Amat baseball and coach Andy Nieto. If you think Nieto resigning Thursday after winning his fourth championship at the school was a surprise, you haven’t been reading our blog. First, the big news. A day after Nieto resigned, sophomores Anthony Walters and Christian Moya, two huge pieces to their championship team, left the school according to sources. Moya is reportedly transferring to South Hills. Back to Nieto and Amat baseball. I don’t normally pay close attention to comment speculation and predictions, except in this case, what has been rumored for weeks came to fruition, and what’s been rumored to follow is curiously taking shape. On the same day Nieto resigned, Bishop Amat principal Richard Beck confirmed that El Rancho junior varsity coach Gabe Lopez was at the school droping off his resume and inquiring about the opening that just became vacant a few hours earlier. For the record, Beck said Thursday the position wouldn’t be floated until today, would close on June 20 with a decision hopefully by June 30. It’s also interesting that two days before Nieto resigned, a well-placed source in Whittier told me that Lopez already was set to take over once Nieto made it official. Beck said that isn’t true. “Anyone that applies will have just as good a shot as the next one. There are others who have applied already as well. There isn’t one person we have in mind.” Beck said. However, if Lopez gets the job, folks are going to wonder if this was a backroom deal all along, and if new applicants ever had a chance. Although Nieto understandably denied it, sources have been emailing and calling me the past month suggesting he was ready to leave Amat, and that he would wind up at St. John Bosco. Sources have confirmed Nieto already has had cursory conversations with Bosco about its opening. There are also rumors Nieto could wind up at Damien, but there is one problem with that, Al Leyva is still the coach there. Want more fun speculation, Nogales’ John Romano, who just retired after more than 30 years at the school and more than 600 victories, said he is absolutely interested in Amat’s opening and will also be leaving his resume. Also, for those wondering if Bishop Amat softball coach Kristen Dedmon was returning after her first year, the answer is yes, she’ll be back. In football news, Aram Tolegian posted this on his In the Huddle Blog...

Bishop Amat’s next quarterback also could be junior-to-be Ryder Ruiz, the brother of Amat Hall of Famer Rio Ruiz

Lopez met with Amat before the season ended. Official withdrawal of second player happened today. The first player withdrew immediately after player meeting yesterday

    • FredJ

It wouldn’t surprise me, but for now I’m reporting what I can confirm through well-placed sources. Lopez was allegedly at the school yesterday dropping off his resume shortly after Nieto resigned. And the weird thing is Lopez’s name surfaced with sources I trust well before that too. This has all the makings of a backroom deal should he become coach.

      • D Snitch

I know. I posted Lopez was the next in line before he dropped it off which should’ve told u something was afoot.

I can say Nieto is handling like a pro. He doesn’t burn bridges with institutions.

I also can say it was a resign or get fired force out regardless of what both sides say, which is why coach Beck doesn’t want the job.

On a pure speculation level don’t be surprised if Beck leaves if Nieto lands a sweet job.

        • http://sgvtribune.com/ Galileo

          Nieto/Beck…they’re a package deal…wherever they go

      • http://sgvtribune.com/ Galileo

how, why and when did Lopez catch their eye? isn’t Gabe Alvrez a more logical man for the job? I believe he’s on the coaching staff at USC…the last guy they looked at with similar credentials worked out pretty well!

        • Stealthyrobert

Did Principle Beck go to El Rancho???

          • maauto

            No…he is a swordsman….ugh!

          • http://bishopamat.org/ Joe Amat

Just kills me that not only was MSGr Carroll the St Paul principal but he brought over current principal. Beck, the finance lady who controls those tight purse strings, and the inept basketball coach who has take our basketball program from championship level to an embarrassing demotion to the Camino Real League.

If not for the stalwart Lancers left and the strong alumni continuing the fight they’d have turned it into the Pit North by now.

    • Stealthyrobert

How do you know all this you are either Mr or Coach Beck ( maybe even Robert) to have all this inside info

  • Not the Coach

Too much information out there for Gabe Lopez not to be the front runner. How is it that it was rumored and posted he was the next coach before he turned in his resume.
Roberts dreams have come true. Now the new Coach’s nightmares start. Per Roberts Standards He should win league hands down the next 8 years in a row (an al together possibility with this league) but even more important he should be in the D3 Finals at Dodger Stadium Every year he coaches… I’d be a happy camper to see that happen the next 8 years before the Admin forces him out…

    • FredJ

The commenter who went by Robert was a nut who bashed kids and coach Nieto, which is why I started banning his comments. But some of the things he predicted, as if he had a well-placed source in the admin. department, are coming true.

      • Not the Coach

Fred… Chances are good Robert is one of your sources for AMAT… Some of his predictions are coming true which is why I hope Amat is in the ship the next 8 years..

Do you think He’s D Snitch tuned down????

        • D Snitch

That’s cold dude. Just plain cold

      • Stealthyrobert

I cant believe you would censure anyone he had all the right info?? I think D Snitch is Robert on the down low myself. He has lots of the same type info. Let Robert speak again Fred

        • D Snitch

Stop it. Roberts agenda was to oust Nieto. 4-8 tittles was fine with me.

          • Stealthyrobert

I just think he was pointing out how out of whack peoples view of the coach was. Apparently Nieto was already out the door before the playoffs started. The unbelievable run just put a twist in how now was it going to playout.

  • FredJ

What’s shocking about all this is that it follows arguably Amat’s most impropable CIF baseball championship ever. Never seen this much turmoil after a title, championships usually cure all this. Amazing how its unfolding with players leaving and a four-time coach saying goodbye.

    • http://sgvtribune.com/ Galileo

1968 was the most improbable championship ever! AA champs,in Coach Pat Holligans first year, beating Jim Slaton on the road (victorville) I believe he was 15-0 at the time and enjoyed a long MLB career…then beating Royal Oak in the finals

    • http://sgvtribune.com/ Galileo

Mr. Libero….Dedmon returning as coach was accomplished in May…not really braking news!

      • FredJ

Did I write it was breaking news or write for those wondering …. C’mon Handyman, get it right.

        • http://sgvtribune.com/ Galileo

well, is was common knowledge around town 3 weeks ago…if you would’ve hung out around the 1st base dugout at the All-Star…I would have past the NEWS along to you ! will the Netherlands whup Espana today?

    • http://sgvtribune.com/ Galileo

They’d be crazy not to take a long, hard look at Romano.

  • TheCloser

Going to miss Nieto and his 4 CIF rings. I don’t care what anyone says I’d rather have a proven winner coaching my kids than some unknown.
On that note, a word to the Amat administration. Get someone who gives a crap about the AMAT SOFTBALL program. Amat is me and wife’s schools so I’d never have my kids transfer for a coach because it’s our school but it’s sad to see the lack of commitment, effort, communication skills, and coaching ability for someone that played at UCLA.

  • Valley Athletics

I wonder where Moya and Walters will end up . South hills ? There home school ? Will see

    • TheCloser

      I heard Tustin for Walters.

  • D Snitch

    Moya – South Hills
    Walters – OLU

  • FredJ

Just heard Christian Moya is transferring to South Hills.

    • Not the Coach

      11 minutes behind.

    • Valley Athletics

Figured . That is where all the arsenal end up .

      • Not the Coach

If they all end up there why did 5 of them start for Amat in the Championship game?

        • Not the Coach

          Sorry. 4. One left previously

        • Valley Athletics

Meant to say the ones that leave Amat .

  • FredJ

I updated this post with Bishop Amat principal Richard Beck confirming that El Rancho assistant Gabe Lopez dropped off his resume Thursday, just a few hours after coach Andy Nieto resigned. However, Beck denied having conversations with Lopez previously about the position while Nieto was in charge. “Anyone that applies will have just as good a shot as the next one. There are others who have applied already as well. There isn’t one person we have in mind.” Beck said.

    • D Snitch

      Fred. Fred. Fred.
      “While Nieto was in charge”

Was that Thursday when he resigned? The last day of school? Or when they asked him to resign or be terminated?

Being the stellar reporter you are you should have asked when that was or when was the first time any Amat representative ever talked to Lopez regarding coaching at Bishop.

It the resignation was so unexpected how when did they first get the word out ?

I don’t mean to derail his chances. Just looking for honesty from a catholic school

      • reality

        Thats funny. Catholic=integrity.

  • reality

Clearly big-time high school sports are going the way of big time college and even pro programs which is ME FIRST! And now who is leading the charge? Coaches. And probably hoping to take a few defectors with them. At least Nieto did’nt say “I want to spend more time with the family”. CIF is reaping the fruit from their shamefully cowardly policies.

  • Yellow Balls

    The Closer,

When you have a walk on that played at UCLA you get those types of results. Best of luck to Amat in softball. I find it almost ridiculous that Amat would look in to hiring a person of Lopez background will yield the same results in baseball. Good Luck Amat Nation things are looking blurry now

  • D Snitch

    Gabe Lopez
    Cerritos. LMU. SJS
    7 years minors with yanks
    Middle infielder ( 2nd mostly)

    Good creds. Possibly Amat worthy.

    • Stealthyrobert

You have lost of inside info D Snitch are you sure your not Robert or are you Chapalita??? lol

    • NoWayJose

Coming from a parent from inside the program, especially one who had been talking to all of the other parents in the program, the hiring of a El Rancho coach with no varsity experience or winning history will not keep most of the baseball kids from transferring. Its gonna need to be walk on with enough clout that everyone believes in. Were not gonna wait for the program to rebuild from the ground up. Bring in someone spectacular or bye bye

  • Yellow Balls

He’s never been a head coach at any level except a little league team I believe. Great he was a decent ballplayer that played A and AA ball with the Yanks for a few years then the Padres. He has never done anything coaching he is the asst. JV coach at El Rancho and he is a Special Ed teacher there to my understanding that just got pinked. If Amat is a middle of the road lower level program then he would definitely be a good fit. I dont believe that and I know he has major issues with Amat boosters so we will see how this plays out. I for one believe an experienced coach would be a great fit at Amat its not a learn as you go job. If he gets it many players will defect.

    • D Snitch

Head JV Coach according to Amat info

      • Yellow Balls

Not head JV Coach unless thats what was put on his resume. My question is if he is that good of a coach why wouldnt he be an asst Varsity coach at El Rancho at least? Oh thats right he tried to commit mutiny with the staff. Ask the youth board at Twin Cities Wolverines about him and his wife they will let you know what type of people they are. According to sources there they were band from the league.

        • Honest one

Yellow balls you need to get your facts straight before you post. He is the head JV coach, still remains staff for ERUSD, get his career facts straight. I highly doubt you want to continue mentioning the Twin-Cities Wolverines and put their dirt out…but what you should know now and up to you if you like to continue digging a hole deeper for TC Wolverines, as their program is speaking for itself! In a nut shell…Cheer director, still in the program Debbie, referred to the girls as “hoes”. The Lopez’s had every right to raise concerns. The board did nothing about it but give Debbie a slap in the hand. Because the Lopez’s raise concerns with the conference the executive board which consist at that time of husband and wife…decided to remove her for violating the chain of command. No physical involvement or verbal altercation but because the Lopez’s did the right thing and raise concern, advocating for their daughter…if you’re a parent you would have done so too! Nobody likes honest people and this is what these two individuals are. As far as coach Lopez, a great coach starts somewhere…Nieto, Romano, Beck and all other great known coaches did. Yellow balls maybe you should ask Ben Meza and Frank Llanes why Lopez is not that the head coach. Every parent and teacher knows the program should be ran by Lopez. Get it right Yellow Balls!!!

          • Yellow Balls

Yawn! Get your facts straight, people know the BS that comes with Gabe namely his loud mouth half. Great coaches do start somewhere maybe he should start at his alma mater El Rancho, oh wait he isnt qualified for it. What makes you think that Amat is a good starter job for him? Amat is a great job and they will do a disservice to give it to him, he is a better fit coaching little league. Dont worry we wont be discussing this any longer he wont get the job at Amat your BS parade is up. A new high profile name popped up and I believe he will get the job has experience running a catholic school VARSITY baseball team.

          • Stealthyrobert

Who is the new hogh profile guy BTW

  • Tweedo

    BREAKING NEWS!!!
The next Bishop Amat coach will be Tony Bernal.

    • NoWayJose

      LOL!

  • http://bishopamat.org/ Joe Amat

The best thing Amat could do is to open the piggy bank a bit, bump the stipend/salary and get a couple alums back into the fold. They should entice Kendrena to return by allowing him to continue his Inside Edge work and just walk-on to coach baseball. While they’re at it, they could also do the same and bring Lokar back to basketball and get that program back where it belongs. and allow him to do his Positive Coaching Alliance thing. Alumni walk ons like that are the kind that could work at schools like Amat.

    • http://sgvtribune.com/ Galileo

      Lola and I concur 100% Joe !

      • http://sgvtribune.com/ Galileo

why is there no mention of Gabe Alvarez as the next baseball coach at BAHS?

    • AMAT 73

Excellent plan JA, now all you have to do is put the idea in Mnsgr’s ear . Might not cost him as much as he thinks it will based on the return of investment .

      • http://bishopamat.org/ Joe Amat

…and all you have to see is the empty gym and general apathy towards the boys program to see much can be done in that area. Getting alumni excited again would be a great start.

    • FredJ

Except that Amat’s preference is to have a teacher that coaches above all else, unless your name is Richard Wiard.

      • http://bishopamat.org/ Joe Amat

Exactly. And in a court of law they call that “precedent”. A policy (or excuse) that doesn’t hold water. It’s sometimes a limiting policy that could cause compromises. The myth of the walk-on problem is due to the walk-on not really becoming a member of the school community. These guys (as is Wiard) are far more than that. They are family. Much different.

  • baseballsgv

    Coach Beck
    Is an Amat Alumni
He has no ties to Coach Nieto
He won’t leave to follow Coach Nieto
