I’m back … so tell me what I missed while I was gone ….

I thought for sure with two weeks away from this place Andy Nieto would be at Damien by now and Bishop Amat would already have replaced Nieto at Amat? I also thought the Lakers would have added at least one free agent but it’s like time stood still. Or maybe a million things happened and I was so far out of sight, out of mind that I need some of you to get me up to speed on what’s happening around the Valley, what rumors are out there and what stories need looking into??? Best news I heard while gone is that we struck a deal with MaxPreps to provide localized standings, schedules, leaders and updated scores on our websites. Best part is our website should provide daily schedules and results through MaxPreps and we hope everything comes together by the fall. Other than that, time to make some phone calls and get back in the groove, football starts in just over a month.

UPDATE: Source confirms Bishop Amat coach Andy Nieto HAS interviewed at Damien this week.
UPDATE: Bishop Amat AD Michael Manzo said he expects the Lancers to announce its next baseball coach next week.
UPDATE: San Dimas has hired Northview graduate Omar Diaz as its next wrestling coach. Saints also looking for a boys and girls varsity soccer coach.
UPDATE: Los Altos baseball has hired assistant coach Hector Gutierrez to take over the program following last month’s resignation of Andrew Formano.
RUMOR SPECULATION: Despite an email and tweet telling me that super Northview baseball freshman Jacob Amaya is transferring to South Hills, Northview coach Dan Roddy said there is no truth to it. He says he’s heard the rumor too, but has been told by Amaya’s family he isn’t going anywhere. Amaya is already committed to Cal State Fullerton. South Hills already has benefited by getting a transfer from Bishop Amat, Christian Moya.

I don’t know how much you care about chino hills but rumor has it that long time baseball coach over there was fired. This could be a juicy story…. Coach of the year last season and fired in July? Something smells fishy….

    • staelthyrobert

Its about time with all of the monkey business that’s going on over there Im surprised he lasted so long.

    • staelthyrobert

Why do you think al these coaches are getting run out???

      • OuttaYourMindTrib

Because they are crooks. With the explosion of Travel Ball, it just creates a system where bad people can take advantage of a situation.

        • Stealthyrobert

Thats exactly right all these coaches think they are not replaceable. The real facts are that these guys chose to be coaches not the other way around. The facts are that there are plenty guys out there who are better baseball guys than some of theses coaches. This guy at CHHS was hired on an inside deal not because of what his qualifications were. He now has experience hope no other school has to deal with his BS anymore. Lets wait and see what he does on the inside to undermine the program we can tell by his tweets hes really bitter. Keep an eye on him I have seen this before especially because he is sill on staff,

    • Gridiron 65

This was long over due! This coach had stepped way over the line in his commingling of his Dirt Bags baseball program and the CHHS program. He had created a pay to play situation were if students and their parents would not pay( big dollars) to play in the Dirt Bags baseball program, then they would have not shot at playing at CHHS. This was about substantially lining his pockets and using his position to do it. This was long over due. I have nothing but respect for the Principal who had the courage to do what is right. CHHS will attract many great candidates for the head coaching position. The school will insure the next baseball coach works with-in the frame work of what is morally and ethically right! That would be a different direction!

      • Leroy

Well said Grid65!! I’ve heard the same for years!! Could be why Ayala baseball is making a comeback!!

      • TheCloser

I agree, we live in Chino Hills and I would’ve never sent my kids to Chino Hills with Billingsley there. Top drawer talent in Chino Hills but the team always underachieved. Got a phone call the day it happened as Chino Hills was celebrating and people were rallying to keep their boys in the city instead of heading to other schools outside the area to play baseball!

      • OuttaYourMindTrib

I’ve got a few friends that still live in CHHS’ area and the sentiment has been almost since the beginning that the guy is a major league crook. One friend’s son was cut from the program as a senior because they could not afford to pay for admittance on some Travel Ball team, I believe he mentioned “The Rockies” travel program in Walnut or something like that. It’s been a few years since I heard the stories.
I hear the the incoming Freshman parents are in an uproar. LOL! They already or have been writing the checks to the Dirt Dawg program being promised spots in the program. LOL. Serves the hover parents right.

The guy takes credit for “work” that other coaches do. Real class act.

Regardless, there is a ton of talent in the city; enough to go around for Ayala and CHHS.

  • Valley Athletics

Know word on who is coach at Diamond Ranch either .

    • staelthyrobert

      Maybe JIm Wiess again lol

  • FredJ

Word I’m hearing is that Nieto interviewed at Damien yesterday. If so, you gotta believe it’s only a matter of time before Damien makes it official.

    • staelthyrobert

Fred its all formality they all have to make it look like everyone is getting a chance. Do you really think they would have fired Leyva If Nieto would have not gotten fired???Please tell us all your opinion!!

      • FredJ

I think Nieto gets it, no doubt.

        • staelthyrobert

Fred do really believe all these changes are on the up and up ?????

    • staelthyrobert

Hey Fred no one else will hire Nieto in the High School arena but Hemingway. Thats his only chance rumor has it that MHphd is the only one in Nietos corner at Damien. What is your insider telling you about that?

  • FredJ

I’m also hearing Bishop Amat’s next baseball coach could be a surprise nobody has talked about …

    • staelthyrobert

      Whos that ???

      • AMAT 73

        Michael Young !!!!!!!

        • staelthyrobert

          you serious ?

        • Leroy

Michael Young at Amat will never happen. Good try.

          • staelthyrobert

Rumor has it they saw M Young at Amat today!!!

          • Not Since 1995

Better luck getting the big MEATBALL, Tommy Lasorda to take the job.

        • Yellow Balls

Michael Young was on campus and might be part of the new staff but I do know he was pushing for another candidate. CB are his initials if so then this would be a great hire for the Lancers.

    • Lancelot

      An out of towner right?

  • Robert

What about the girls basketball coach at Amat?

    • staelthyrobert

      Hey Robert your back!!!!

  • JamesJ

The LA baseball hire is a mistake. This guy is arrogant, self-righteous and really doesn’t know much about baseball. Conqs went with the safe hire rather than really looking for a great coach. Too bad. Did they even fly the job?

  • Amat News

BREAKING: Clemente Bonilla out of Capistrano Valley Christian High School will be the next Bishop Amat baseball coach.

    • TheCloser

Wow, is this true? Just Googled him, looks young but has a solid coaching record at a small school. We’ll hope for the best. One thing is for certain, lots of options in the area for baseball Bonita, Damien (hopefully with Nieto), Chino Hills, South Hills, etc. so he better come ready to continue the Amat baseball tradition.

      • Stealthyrobert

Hopefully without Nieto hes on the lines of the guy who got fired at CHHS. They coach for personal gain not the love of the game.

        • TheCloser

If you Google Clemente Bonilla it looks like he’s involved with a travel program named MVP out of Santa Barbara with his dad.

  • The stands

I just heard Amat’s freshman football team won the Claremont passing tournament.

  • Valleyballer

I know I’m a little late to the discussion, however, one must believe the following: Nieto will be announced this week as the new head coach at Damien High School. Once he arrives, he would have previously done as much homework as possible. When I say homework, I mean, the obvious. He will know his “A” players, “B” players and so on. Obviously, kids grow and become better in the off season so he will have an area in his mind for those kids.

Realistically, he will have several workouts. These workouts will not require the boys to do anything unordinary and they will obviously allow Nieto to see the talent he has been informed of. Nieto is a very smart coach who went through the ringer in his past program; however, do not let that fool you. When he sees talent, he will grasp it, and grasp it tightly. No previous positions are spoken for as the program will be as new as a brand new car.

Parents at Damien: Please trust me. Coach Nieto is completely approachable and in no way the person people portray him to be off the field. If you approach him and are blunt (respectfully) with questions about the program, he will talk to you like you have known him for years. Please do not make the mistake and ever bring up the obvious nightmare for a coach. He will turn and walk away. Your son will then hopefully get to pinch run at some point during his career.

    • vegemighty

“Please do not make the mistake and ever bring up the obvious nightmare for a coach.”

      I don’t understand this sentence.

    • Stealthyrobert

Look Sc–t Nieto was wolf in sheep’s clothing why do you think Amat let him go? The only place he can go is Damien. Servite and SJB dont want him. when was the last time you knew of anyone who quit a job with really no back up plan?? I dont care what anyone says or thinks poor Leyva was fired after Nieto became available plain and simple. Not really a place I would want to work (Damien). The Alum at Damien doesn’t want him either that’s why its taking so long. There’s a battle going on inside the Damien administration.

      • Sports watcher

The administration or the parents? It will be interesting.

    • inside the dugout

Approachable, yeah right. Only if you are one of his “A” players. Then you, your family, are important enough to stop, talk, and even sit down and break bread with you.
Everyone else, “B” players, get his typical B.S. answers as he rushes away from you, or you get his courtesy wave through the fence. Don’t try to stop him as he is heading to his car because he will drive right over you in the gas guzzler.
We experienced both. He is a very cordial person when you reach that “A” player status.

  • Del Rio Softball

I believe they hired a New Softball Coach at Whittier High School

  • Stealthyrobert

Funny how he let some parents run his decisions at Amat

  • Stealthyrobert

Rumor has it that its illegal to bring players with you Amat has already informed the CIF about his tampering with players. And the players are cooperating with there office
