Should West Covina football be worried? Are the best years behind them?

“If league were this week, we’d be in trouble. No question we have to get better, and I expect our young guys to get better. The effort level was great. And we, as coaches, need to get our guys in better position to be successful.” — West Covina coach Mike Maggiore

One of the more shocking Week 0 results was the West Covina High School football team’s 26-7 loss to Colony in a game that pitted two Central Division teams with designs on a division championship run later this fall.

The good news for Bulldogs’ fans is that the lopsided scoreboard may not have been an accurate indicator of just how close the game was.

“It was 7-7 early in the fourth quarter, we had the ball on the 1-yard line and we didn’t score,” West Covina head coach Mike Maggiore said. “We didn’t score and three plays later, they did. They were up 14-7 at that point and we threw three picks in the fourth quarter, and one of them was returned for a touchdown.
