All Joel Sanchez wanted was for his El Monte High School football team to feel comfortable on Friday night.
The Lions had a huge homecoming crowd to cheer them on against reigning Mission Valley League champion Arroyo. The Lions responded with a 26-23 victory.
“I felt they could play with Arroyo and they had to have confidence,” Sanchez said of his players. “I knew the moment they got on the field they would be more comfortable. They got more confident and the kids stepped up for the big challenge.”
