With four weeks left before playoffs, who leads the Tribune coach of the year race?

Picking coach of the year is always difficult, but it’s also fun too. When I’ve posted leading candidates in mid-season it almost always changes by the second week of the playoffs, and gets easier to narrow down after that. But if I were picking the top five today, this is how it would look in order.

1. Marcel Perez, Northview (5-1)
Beating San Dimas is something few thought any Valle Vista league team could do this season and the Vikings not only beat them, they stomped them. Too bad they blew a 21-point at La Sierra prior because they should be undefeated, and Perez’s boys are doing it with a freshman QB.
2. Jerry Lewallen, Glendora (5-1)
Wins over Charter Oak, Los Altos, Kaiser, Bonita and Alta Loma. The Tartans were 7-3 last year but those three losses came in the Baseline and they missed the playoffs. If they beat Ayala on Friday, this is a group that could run the table the rest of the way, they’re that good.
3. Mike Maggiore, West Covina (4-2)
This should have been Antonio Noodles Hull senior year with the Dogs, but he’s at struggling Diamond Bar and these Dogs are improving by the week. Most thought they were an iffy pick to make the playoffs, now I’m starting to think they can win the Hacienda.
4. Aaron Jamieson, Pomona (3-4)
Considering how handcuffed Jamieson is in the Pomona Unified School district that forced the Devils to forfeit a game because it didn’t feel like traveling on a Friday night and an athletic department that let it forfeit another for not being on top of paperwork, the Devils are 3-2 on the field, and looking like they could compete for a league title. Jamieson deserves credit for keeping the focus on the big picture.
5. Steve Hagerty, Bishop Amat (4-3)
Two weeks ago we were wondering if it was time to make a coaching change after back-to-back losses to Chino Hills and Crespi, but after back-to-back wins over Serra and Alemany, the Lancers are in position to make a run at the Mission League title. Now wouldn’t that be something.
