Charter Oak stuns West Covina: Charter Oak knocked off West Covina 33-21 on Friday night, meaning the race for playoff spots from the Hacienda League will go down to the final week of the season before being decided.
The Chargers (5-4, 3-1) held the Bulldogs to only two first downs and junior quarterback Kam Brown completed 21 of 33 passes for 320 yards and four touchdowns to move his team into a first-place tie with the Bulldogs (6-3, 3-1) with one game left in the regular season.
“We knew this one was crucial,” Brown said. “We knew we had to win or maybe be out of the playoffs. We won, so we’re still in it.”
Bishop Amat rallies past Loyola: Playing without its starting quarterback and dealing with the rustiness of coming off a bye week left the Bishop Amat High School football team ripe to be upset.
It took the Lancers about a half to put any chance that happening against Loyola to rest, however. Amat hit its stride midway through the second quarter and turned an early 10-0 deficit into a 46-23 win on Friday.
“The first half was a little shaky,” Bishop Amat head coach Steve Hagerty said. “I knew we’d settle in. I was much more pleased with the second half. The way we looked at it was like we survived the first half. There was like a tsunami and we held our own. And we came out on top and I felt like our best football was still ahead of us. It was just a matter time to get it going.”
Bonita holds off Ayala: Halloween night was only briefly scary for the Bonita High School football team.
Bonita was sitting on a 28-0 lead in the game that will likely determine the final playoff berth in the Palomares League when Ayala reeled off 14 points in less than two minutes and was a yard from scoring a third consecutive touchdown.
Bonita mounted its second goal-line stand of the night and went on to a 34-14 win Friday night, Ayala’s third consecutive league loss.
Damien gets first league win: Senior night at Damien High School brought lots of energy as the Spartans played host to the Los Osos Grizzlies. After falling behind early, Damien stormed back for a 21-14 victory, its first Baseline League win.
It was all Grizzlies early on as they scored on their first possession. The first score came on a play-action 43-yard touchdown strike by quarterback Donovan Williams.
