VIDEO: Charter Oak senior Anthony Ortega hits game-winning shot in final game before starting chemotherapy treatments for throat cancer

“I ask myself, ‘why me?’ sometimes,” the 18-year-old said. “Everybody tells me that God picks the strongest people to go with some difficult stuff in life. It’s crazy though. It doesn’t hurt to touch, to breath; nothing. It’s just there and it does not bother me at all. I was not expecting to hear what I heard. I was expecting surgery and maybe it was gone.” Anthony Ortega

ortegaSTORY: After learning over Christmas break that he had throat cancer, Charter Oak High School basketball senior Anthony Ortega played in his final game for the Chargers on Wednesday before starting chemotherapy sessions Friday in what he and his family hope is the beginning stages to a long and healthy road back to recovery.
And what an emotional final game it was. Ortega converted the game-winning layup in the final seconds to lift Charter Oak to a 50-48 victory over Nogales on Wednesday. On the game winning play posted on Huddle, Amier Thomas (23) brings the ball up the court and runs a picture-perfect pick-an-roll with Ortega (21), who banks home the game winner with five seconds left.
